Don't attempt to eat at Sputnik (because it will only be an ATTEMPT) – Listen, please, please DON'T go to eat at sputnik. if you are going to drink mimosas or bloody marys or any other alcoholic beverage then you will probably have better luck at this hipster spot filled with apathetic jerks. i've attempted to have a meal at sputnik probably 4 times, thinking each time 'oh, no, it won't be as bad as it was last time. they'll serve me in less than an hour and a half for sure'' and everytime i think this--i'm wrong.
in my most recent attempt to prove myself wrong about the TERRIBLE service at sputnik, i waited two hours for food and then had three of my party's entrees 'comped' in a lame attempt at my forgiveness. in fact, just tonight i though, wouldn't the noodle bowl from sputnik be great right now?
Sure enough, i called to ask if they make this bowl with rice or wheat noodles and guess what? After waiting ten minutes on the phone, they hung it up.
PLEASE do yourself a favor and don't go eat there. let the hipsters breed and consume in peace until their little hang out dies out.
Mmmmm – I go here fairly often and it would have gotten all 5 stars from me, but the service is always slow. I love taking people here, but am embarassed by how long it takes to get service. The food is soo soo good. I do wish they'd bring back the veggie burger though, it was one of the best. They have a killer grilled cheese (seriously) and some amazing creative sandwiches and brunch. HAppy Hour... Go on a Saturday or Sunday morning from 11-3 they have bottomless mimosas for $5 and $3 bloody mary's (not bottomless). Great music, not the typical bar music. A very eclectic feel. Free WiFi. Oh, and a great place to people watch. :) Try it out. It's right on Broadway so if you feel like a wander after a few mimosas you can drop by a cool book store or the enormous Goodwill thrift shop.
High Dive used to be a good Dive – Can you say Emo's with attitude problems? Service is bad, most band are really bad. It was better when it was 7 south and just a plain old dive bar with edgy bands. I think this Emo crowd is going to feel just as stupid as the break dancers of the mid-80's someday. Comb your hair and loose the tight pants mr hip.
Sputnik is located on the south end of Broadway, or as some like to refer to it: ?SO BO.? The bar/restaurant is laden with retro decor, accentuating the mildly attractive, overtly tortured, Denver hipster crowd who frequent it. Anxious to try out the ?Weekend Hangover Brunch,? The DBC (Denver Brunch Club) walked in only to be greeted by?no one. Apparently the bohemian work philosophies of the costumers who patron Sputnik have spilled over to the management and staff. One cannot hope for the luxury of a host or waiting list and customers must actually loom over those already dining in hopes to snag the next open spot. It was a little over an hour before our party of six was able to claim a red pizza hut-like leather booth. Once seated, it took 20 minutes to flag down what appeared to be the only server on staff. It took another 10 minutes to actually get the drinks, which poses the proverbial question, ?Are bottomless mimosas really bottomless if there is no one to refill them?? We had to hunt down menus, which proved to be a difficult task, but still somewhat easier than tracking down our waitress to actually put the food order in. After a total of maybe 2-21/2 hours, plates were finally placed beside our empty champagne flutes and coffee cups. Although we had nothing to wash it down with, the food was hot, simple, and delicious. To the waitress? credit, she did bring out the round of waters requested upon first sitting down after she cleared our empty plates?what???? The entire experience took up about 31/2. All in all, Sputnik failed to launch, however I anticipate a future visit where I?ll take advantage of the bar seating, which seems to lends itself to the whole mimosa refill thing.
What's up with the waitstaff? – I go to Sputnik all the time. It's a few blocks from my house and open late, with a pretty good menu. Most of the sandwiches are tasty, as are the brunch items. There's plenty on the menu, however, that is imaginative but something just gets lost in the execution. You cannot beat the $5 bottomless mimosas for getting tanked on a Sunday morning.
That being said, the staff here is appalling. Food, drinks and the check usually take forevs. Whenever I open a tab, I'm invariably given my bill with some else's credit card. Most of the servers are pretty condescending, which is interesting considering they've got a collective IQ comparable to a sack of hammers or perhaps a box of hair.
There you go. Take what you will.
Best bar food! – It's not a dive bar, nor a sports bar. It's not a diner or even a restaurant at all. It's a bar that serves food and it goes by the name, Sputnik. Even the kitchen has a name (Strekla) at this totally hip South Broadway hang out. However, don't let the Russian names fool you, the food here is, like the bar, impossible to categorize, and they like it that way! If you had to call it something, it'd be eclectic Asian and American street food, but even that leaves you wondering.
Specializing in vegan and vegetarian dishes, Sputnik offers a little of everything...

Staff needs some training and polish – I showed up for the video scavenger hunt, a event that was supposed to start at noon on a saturday. I was there before noon, and when noon came around, nobody was there for the event. I asked the bartender if the event was still going to take place, and he had no idea what I was talking about. I pulled up the website on my laptop and showed it to him--12 noon, that day. Later, he found out that it was on, but scheduled to start at 1pm not 12 noon. I waited until 1 pm, still no event organizers showed up. At 1:30 I finally left. That was about 2 hours wasted. I sent an email to Sputnik, recommending that their staff should know about events that occur the day they work. A man responded and told me that from then on, staff would know. But they've been open three years and they are just now getting around to making sure that their staff knows something about the events on their shift??? Also, I wanted something for my time--2 hours wasted due to an error on their part. Sputnik stopped corresponding with me. So much for customer service! But Sputnik is a haven for the holier-than-thou hipsters and the bartenders need to learn a thing or two about service, and some of them need to learn about being nice to people. One evening I sat at the bar, and the woman bartender treated me with such blatant contempt. i am sure it was because I didn't have the right clothing or haircut. She treated her friends with such hospitality, warmth and energy and I am convinced she wouldn't have offered me a glass of water wth my food if her boss wasn't lurking around behind the bar. The other bartenders are friendly enough, but largely incompetent. I waited so long for the bill the other night that i almost walked out without paying! When the bill came, it was wrong. I always have trouble with the internet connection there. It's free, but very very slow.
A good place--for hipsters, and you're probably not one – Sputnik is a hipster hangout. This means rarely anyone over 30, and you pobably don't wear the right clothes or have the right haircut. The bartenders are simply fashionistas that really don't have the skills to make sputnik anything other than a corner bar with a hip veneer. They are just kids. Once in a while you'll be confronted with the hipster attitude, probably because you're not wearing the right clothes or don't have the approved music knowledge. You'll wait long times at the bar for service, and that service will never be spectacular or above average. You'll be treated like a number, and will be surprised when you see how animated the staff can be when it's one of their friends theyre waiting on. You're not one of their friends. The menu strives for ambition, and is impressive if only for what it tries to do in such a small space. In this category, I give them an A for effort and a B for delivery. The music is OFTEN terrible, and is always played too loud. I can't believe how often the music is obnoxious and weird. The internet connection is consistently poor for my laptop, which is frustrating.
poor bartenders – Wow. the people who work here are the best. I wish I could give them all jobs. the people who own this bar seem to pride themselves on treating the bar staff like indentured servants. It is truly pathetic. If you think that Walmart is bad, as far as employment tactics-check these guys out. smaller scale, worse treatment. That is just not the kind of place I would support.
Rude Staff/ Great crowd, music – The snobbish staff at this place needs a lesson in customer service. The guy with the dark hair and glasses acts like he hates his job the people he serves....as do a few of the others who refuse to give eye contact and smile. Other staff seem o.k. but the crowd is open and friendly and the music is great. But as everyone else says, it's too smoky....I smoke and it's way too smoky for me!
Wait for some of the local bands to play elsewhere in a venue with happy, less intimidating staff, and less smoke....you'll have more fun. The Hi Dive is way over rated.....they must have paid off the Westword to recognize them as "the best rock club in Denver."
