A sister restauant to the better known little owl, Market Table is small, quiet, and serves very beautiful American food at a pretty reasonable price. Just a special restaurant. Go at night when the big window on the corner really gives the place a New York zen you seldom find anymore.
Disappointment – My wife and I loved dining at Market Table, until our last meal there.
The food was not as good as it used to be. My wife's dish was very bland and the pork chop very dry. This can happen, I know. But what really bothered us was, in fact the service. It was very impersonal, and at the end of dinner, the waiter came over, and "asked" are you finished with that as he whisked away our dessert plate off the table. After taking a few steps he realized we were not done with it. He said sorry and he put it back down. We were planning on having coffee, but our check landed on the table a few minutes later, without us asking for it.
I m sorry to say we won't be dining there again.
Solid – Went here for Valentine's Day (I know the post is a bit late) with another couple. The food was outstanding....but came in very small portions. I dont remember what we paid and I understand that VDay is more expensive, but I do remember leaving hungry.
A friend that I was with found a 3 inch piece of sharp plastic in his food (someone dropped a plastic container in the kitchen and apparently didnt find all the pieces). The place doesn't get points off for this because lets face it accidents happen and they comp'd his meal and a bottle of wine. I thought that was very appropriate and even commend them for handling so prefessionally (they offered before we had a chance to complain). Classy, great food and wine selection....but I could use more food for the price.
Wonderful Dining Experience, but Nothing Outstanding – From the owners that brought us the Little Owl, I loved the rustic ambiance of Market Table just as much! Wooden tables complement wine shelves that were propped against exposed brick walls.
My dining partner had just been to this greenmarket-driven restaurant just a few months earlier but didn't think the dinner was memorable. This time around, he went home with the restaurant immortalized in his brains. We were recommended a half bottle of Cab Sauv from Chile that had a nice rounded flavor with limited tanin. I have to say that I was disappointed with the rather limited wine list and the fact that the bar do not serve hard liquor. To start, the romaine salad ala Ceasar was a true pleaser. It had 3 big pieces of anchovies (which we love!) atop a bed of yummy romaine lettuce.
When our entrees arrive, we gasped at how big the portions were! My companion got the grilled pork potterhouse, where the acidity and concentration of the tomato sauce topping perfectly balanced out the strong pork flavors. I ordered the seared cod, where the skin was grilled to cripsy perfection. The butternut squash risotto was lovely although the rice could've been creamier and less grainy.
Dessert didn't fall short either. We shared the pineapple and strawberry crisp topped with vanilla ice cream. What made this dessert so good was combination of the steaming hot fruit crumble laced with super cold ice cream. At the end of our meal, I loved the fact that the bill came inside a leather-bound book where customers leave pleasant comments about how memorable their dining experiences were at Market Table!
While I had a wonderful experience here and would highly recommend it, I probably wouldn't be returning anytime soon just because there are lots more similarly great restaurant out there. There was nothing particularly outstanding or remarkable about the dishes, nonetheless, this market's worth a visit!
We love everthing.. – We have been here so many times and love everything about this place.. the food is so good and will be back again.
Great food, relaxed setting – been there a couple times and always something different on the menu to choose from. we all loved our meal. dining room is a great setting - big floor to ceiling windows right on the corner of carmine and bedford. would go back again.
Great Dining! – I am from out of town and this was my 3rd or maybe 4th time at Market Table! With all the restaurants in the City .....I keep coming back. Between Market Table and Little Owl (Little Owl maybe 5 times worth of fabulous dining!) I could careless to go anywhere else.
Spent Thanksgiving in the City and my family and I enjoyed the best Thanksgiving dinner ever! Turkey and gravy to die for, with turkey stuffing stuffed with figs. Brussels sprouts with pears and bacon and a great bottle of wine.
The best of these two restaurants is the consistency in service, food, atmosphere, and price point!
Little Owl has the best Pork Chop and Sliders ever!
No need to wonder where you are going to eat......This is a no brainier! Market Table or Little Owl.
Perfect night – I love the corner space and windows. The service was outstanding as was the food. Great spot for a first date, and not to brutal on the wallet.
Disappointing – I think if you're going to sepnd money in this economy there are far better places in which to spend it. Our fish was awful, chicken was okay but very dried out. All 4 of our desserts were disappointing. Nice service, though. Friendly staff.
Great Service - Delicious Food – I accidentally stumbled across this place one morning for brunch. I was impressed with its charming decor. The service was good as well was the food . I recommend the delicious eggs benedict and the coffee to definitely jump start your day.
Incredible fish – Went on a Tuesday night, had the market special - a grilled branzino with raisins, sweet onions, kale? and little slices of lemon and garlic. It was so terrifically well done I wanted to lick the plate. Also the monkfish dish was very good, but not a standout. The crabcake appetizer was also excellent. The wine was superb but too pricey. The staff is pretty rude, especially the hostess, but i think i ll be going back just for the food. It is hard to get top-notch fish in this city (that s not lathered in butter and bacon or transmuted into a foam, Bernardin-style). Simple is best with fish, and this chef clearly knows how to do simple very well.
