It's hard for this Jew not to get giddy over just their bagels! If you're a latke lover and can't wait for a holiday then they've got your remedy! Sandwiches and smoked pastrami rule here but a nice lox plate puts a smile in my belly!
The pastrami at this fine deli is absolutely out of this world! Flavorful, fatty (in a good way... like bacon!) and slightly smoky, it's pure bliss on rye. Never had a bad meal here!
Starting at 7am weekdays and 8am weekends, this East Coast-style downtown deli will line your stomach with pastrami and eggs, 3-egg lox omelettes, cheese blintzes, a full assortment of housemade bagels and bialys, and their Breakfast Dog--a grilled Sabrett with eggs, bacon, and cheddar. And if that can't roust you from your Tempurpedic, I don't know what will.
Jew-ISH deli with pastrami-powered soul. Great bagels, sandwiches, chopped liver, and ultra-comforting hungarian mushroom soup. Save room for the best rugelach in town.
Out of this world patarami! Huge sandwiches! A great neighborhood deli!
Pastra-Me-not-so-happy – One of the world's greatest treats to the tastebuds is a well-made Pastrami on Rye. The smokey, peppery, succulent meat melting away in a pillow of rye. Food just doen't get any better.
Passing by crowded K&Z at lunchtime, I was expecting a quality deli experience. My mistake.
K & Z's insulted my tastebuds. Dry, over-brined, and heavily salted meat served on embarassingly stale rye. I probably used half a bottle of mustard to get through my sandwich. Any other flavors in the spice rub are beaten senseless by what tastes like a year long bath in the Great Salt Lake. The texture of the meat itself was dry and firm much like the rye. My wife could barely choke down one bite of my sandwich. Her latkes tasted decent, but were thicker than to what I'm accustomed.
Thank goodness for the large selection of sodas and beer.
There are great places for pastami on the west coast. This isn't one of them.
So, So Sad – A jewish deli in Portland! Well it is a deli and it is in Portland, but it bears no resemblance to a real jewish deli. Tonight I had my fourth meal at K&Z. All included pastrami, but none of the four had any true jewish deli pastrami. Instead there was dry, thick cut pastrami with little of the complex pastrami taste that one gets at Katz's or at the Carnegie Deli in NYC. The rye bread tonight was dry almost stale tasting, not soft, rich and chewy as fresh rye would be. My dining companion ordered latkes and got thick, dense dry squashed potato meatball-like brown tasteless masses. Nearly inedible.
To be fair the cole slaw good as was the chopped liver. Service was fine for the size of our party.
Do not go to K&Z for jewish deli. Have beer or a soda and a side of cole slaw. These will not disappoint you as do the main elements of their menu
Best sandwich – Wow great Pastrami, Something Portland greatly lacks
:( It still isnt as good as you can get in LA or specialy NY but for Portland it's Great.! Service was a little too cool For a Jewish deli and music really did suck too. But all in all you can beat the food. I would keep coming back for the Pastrami anyway.....
Good Food Indifferent service. – I was really excited to have a "real" Deli in Portland.
The food is acceptable but the service is terrible.
Cold soup, coffee and the milk comes 10 mins later.
The staff seemed to think they were a little too cool to serve customers.
The music was hideous, loud punk/rock/obnoxious music.
Nick needs to get down to the restaurant and kick ass.
At least hire a manager that will straighten out the staff.
Lots of potential here, but the execution is lacking.
Poor Poor Poor – We ate here about a year ago and were blown away by the quality of the food. Not so now. Four family members and I just finished lunch and what a disappointment. Slow service, stale bread, dry Pastrami, no flavor all around. Save yourselves from discontent and keep walking past this highly over-rated establishment.
BAD SVC/UNCLEAN – So the bagels are good but the girl behind the counter messed up my order (and there were no other people waiting) because she wasn't paying attention and was chatting it up w/her friend behind the counter.
To add to that, several times I have been there and the workers don't wear gloves in between touching your bagel and taking your money which is totally unclean and disgusting.
i've given up and won't be going back.
Not Good at all – I have given this place a chance four times for lunch, and each time it has been bad. The service is slow and the food is average. But to top it all off during my most recent visit our server asked to leave because he needed the table even though there were 3 empty 4 top tables available. The other thing I find hard to explain is how does a place get a Best of City Search rating and have over 20, 1 star ratings. 20 one star ratings it will take you some time searching through the City Search Site to find another restraunt with that many bad ratings. City search might want to factor in actual customer comments as a part of there Best Of City Search program.
Trash – if I could it would be zero stars. do not waste your money! This is an insult to a real Deli
Dreadful – This place should be shot for daring to call itself a New York-style Jewish deli. Fake, processed turkey foam instead of fresh turkey? Corned beef so highly peppered that it burns the inside of your mouth? Stale rye bread? Pickle slices so meager they are barely visible on the plate.
Steer clear--they are nothing but fakers.
Excellent fries. Monster menu to pick from. If you take someone there and they cant find something they want- have them wait in the car.
Im not a guest who needs to be coddled by the waitstaff. In saying that, each time I have been, the wait staff is anything but friendly and it takes a good 10 minutes plus to get anyone to make eye contact with you then they walk on past. Over and over. Almost like they challenge you to try and get them to come over. The waiters are FAR worse than the waitresses.
