BUYER BEWARE!!! I went in for a color correction. I asked for a senior stylist. They put me with SHANNA. She did not seem to understand what I meant when I said that my hair was too ashy. She had to ask two other stylists for advice. All I needed was some lowlights. Instead she redid my base that I had just had done the previous day, and did lowlights AND highlights. When she was done my hair was still very ashy but now with ashy streaks. So she went back and put in some warmer highlights. So now it was STILL ashy and ALL of my blond was gone. No way was I going to let her touch my hair again. THEN they tried to charge me for 4 processes. I did not feel I had to pay for a second process to fix what should have been done right the first time. They charged me $174. WHAT!! I should have refused to pay because I hated my hair. But I am not that way and I wanted to leave. So I was out $200 because I always tip regardless. I tried to live with it but hated it. The next day I went to the other Aveda salon in Raleigh-Carmen Carmen( Jessica easily fixed my hair. Now it looks great. Highly recommend Jessica! She said my hair was so ashy that a few pieces actually looked purple). The next day I went back to Von Kekel because I wanted my money back. I spoke to Paul, the manager and Shanna, my "senior" stylist. I explained to Paul what happened. I said I wanted my money. Shanna kept saying, "we'll that's not going to happen" and that I would be taking food off her table and out of her children's mouth. Paul kept saying " it's not our policy to refund and you should have come back here to get it fixed by another stylist". WHAT ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!! As if I would ever go back there. How is redoing my hair and refunding my money not a wash for them? One way they have a satisfied client and no difference in their pocket. The other way they have an extremely upset client writing scathing reviews. What kind of business runs like this?They obviously don't care about their reputation. I go to Aveda because I expect the best, but I got the absolute worst. I wish I had read reviews like this before I went. When I walked out Paul snidely said, thank you. These people give Aveda a bad name. Do not go to this salon and definitely do not let Shanna practice on you!!!
Don't let the nice atmosphere fool you...This may have the look and feel of a lux salon, but the attitudes of staff and the owner are atrocious. There is no point in making a complaint about the service because the owner isn't looking for honest and respectful feedback. He is as moody as the staff. You won't get what you'd expect, so don't bother.
I received a certificate to get a facial at the salon and was very excited to try them out. I was very disappointed overall in my experience. The salon was completely empty when I arrived except for the employees which was strange at that time of day, the salon I go to would have been a hive of activity. The man working the counter came off as aloof and arrogant. Definitely did not feel welcomed as a customer. The woman who gave me the facial did a mediocre job, I have had lots of facials, and I'm glad I didn't pay for this one myself. The woman was more interested in talking about her personal life then giving a thorough facial. I will definitely be spending my money at Skin Essence to get my facials in the future. The difference in quality between the facials is night and day. I feel that I get my money's worth and more at Skin Essence and left Von Kekel feeling disappointed. Will not be going back.
Wonderful Experience – I went into Synergy Spa on 4/23/2012 for a massage. I was in serious pain and they were very attentive. The massage was wonderful. I felt much better afterwards. The atomspere was relaxing and pleasant. I will definitely return for another visit and recommend to my friends.
I had the best experience here. Glad I found Von Kekel. – I've read reviews both pro and con so I thought I'd tell about my experience. I wanted a perm, not a little old lady perm, but something bouncy and smart. I like Aveda products and when I heard about the $100 gift certificate deal, I grabbed it. And I'm so glad I did. MJ was the stylist recommended on the phone and she was a joy. When we talked, she understood what I wanted and added to the conversation. The result was one of the best perm I've ever had, and I've had my share since I'm a curly person at heart.
I went back and got a trim a week later and am now a Von Kekel regular. I don't know what happened with the people who weren't happy here. From the moment I walked in, everyone in the salon was gracious and caring. MJ has extraordinary talent. II wouldn't dream of going anywhere else.
miscommunication – it seems to me the person who paid too much though received a really awesome deal does not know how to explain her thoughts well on paper. yes cosmotologists & estheticians are all licensed to do other things as well, they are all trained and continue to go to school. the person doing your nails might have mentioned her other skills to get you to come back and try those. ive been to von kekel several times and have always had a good experience. there is such a thing (that ive experienced at other salons) called cutting too much, maybe the stylist was being cautious- better safe than sorry! nothing you talked about seems like a reason to not go to von kekel. it just seems you had too much time on your hands to think about these things and felt pissed. i understand not being happy about your services but that does not write off the entire salon. a lot of amazing stylists also "dry cut" its just another technique learned in school! i know for a fact von kekel expects their staff to be fully trained and to continue their education bc these are things i look for when finding a stylist- which i did at VK! I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT AMAZING EXPERIENCES THERE AND HAVE ALWAYS BEEN TREATED GREAT! I love going on a weekend and getting my nails and hair done while enjoying mimosas! and you said something about getting a call back from a staff member?? Hows that for great customer service!
Way to go VK & I promise to keep coming back and continue referring my friends who have all had great experiences!
Paid half-price- still too much – So I went to the Von Kekel location at North Hills last week, and was truly dissapointed. I purchased a gift certificate for $50 for $100 worth of services thinking I had really struck a good deal....on paper, heck yeah I had a good deal- after my visit? Not so much.... I scheduled for a cut and a manicure. I got in the chair, we chatted about what I wanted (I have long, fine hair, just looking for a bit of a trim and to add some more body/movement). The chat went well, so we headed to shampoo. Got back in the chair and she started to trim the ends. I was happy that she hadn't cut off too much and had done just enough. She then blow-dried my hair; now, I don't know if this was just her technique, but I've never had my hair dried and then cut, especially because it's so fine- but I went with it. She trimmed up my existing layers and said 'Ok, what do you think?' I said, let's do a little more. She did more. I asked again, tried to explain to her again what I wanted- a lot of dimension, movement, different layers, something a la Jen Aniston. She made one or two more small cuts, asked how that was, and I said great. I wasn't going to sit in the chair all day waiting for something to go right. I also felt rushed. Snip here, snip there, can I be done? Hmmmm, ok.........
Then came the manicure. I have not had a manicure in years and years and I was just looking for them to be filed, trimmed, and cleaned up. First, the tools were not sterilized- she took them out of a dirty cloth bag. My nails were not cleaned at all- after my appointment, I inspected my nails and I could have done a better job myself. My nails were still dirty, poorly filed, and still had hang nails. During my manicure I was told, by my manicurist, that she only does massage or facials. WHAT?! Why isn't someone who's trained to work on nails completing this task? Do they let their massage therapists cut hair too?
Both of the ladies I saw that day were very nice and I'm sure they meant well, but they certianly executed their jobs very poorly. Frankly, I'm glad I had a gift certificate because it was not worth full price.
I love me some Von Kekel... – I wanted to take a second to write about my positive experience at Von Kekel.... I notice on Citysearch that many people just want to vent about their percieved "bad experiences". The girl before me seems unhappy and a bit confused, the review of the color process doesn't make sense (who knows). I have been a client at Von Kekel for 3 years, and as the tag line says, I love it. I have a great stylist, who always makes my highlights and cut look awesome. I also do waxing, and my brows consistently look perfect. As I said, I just wanted to talk about my very positive experiences at Von Kekel. They have a great staff and do wonderful job for their cleints!
avoid this place like the plague – So I do not write reviews on here but after the fiasco this weekend I felt the need to WARN others. I visited Von Kekel wanting to tone down the brassiness and orange color of my hair. I had a consult with the stylist the week prior and she stated she could definitely fix it and advised that me it was orange due to all of the highlights in the past. I visited this salon last week and could not wait for this "expert" to fix my hair. Well after two hours in the chair my hair was dried and it looked the exact same, literally still orange, still brassy. I went ahead and paid the $110, yes that much for a semi perm color. I proceeded to go see my sister for her opinion and we both felt the same, I could have done the same thing with a 3 dollar box of loreal.
SO I called the salon first thing the next morning and they had me come in same day to fix it. Upon arrival the stylist was nice but a little cold and the owner was extremely rude and actually frowned at me when I checked in. We get back to her station and she advises me that all she can do is low lights WITHOUT TELLING ME that these are the same as bleach (ammonia, peroxide). I decide to take her advice and let her do what she thought was gonna work. Well she put low lights over my entire head and now I have black stripes, LITERALLY black stripes like the cheshire cat. Not to mention that after talking to another hair stylist I learned that the very thing she told me caused my orange brassiness was basically put back on my head.
I look terrible when I only went in asking for BROWN hair, nothing fancy just wanted to match my roots that were easily 2 inches long. I would much prefer honesty from this stylist than the mess I have now. If you can't do what someones asks then tell them. I am embarassed to go in public with this mess of color on my head.
On a side note, I do not believe that even half of these stylists are aveda trained. read the reviews people, this place sucks
