Neighborhoods: Far North Side, Ravenswood
A real review from someone in the neighborhood – Disregarding their terrible choice of slogans, we walked over to this Ravenswood neighborhood restaurant tonight. We were greeted promptly by an extremely charming Greek woman who I assume was one of the two owners. Without a reservation on a Friday night we were seated promptly by our lovely hostess to a well set table. This is a BYOB place and we were lucky to find an awesome '05 Franciscan Merlot at the corner store on Wolcott & Montrose for about $20 -so we had that going for us.
Upon close observation it seems there was one really good waitress, and one clueless waiter. We got the waiter. He was totally incompetent. We saw a help wanted sign outside, so that may be cleared up by now. The food was remarkably good. Being at a Greek establishment I chose a lamb dish and it arrived delicious and very balanced in acidity. I thought it would be a typical small wrack of lamb, but it was larger and turkey-leg-like. Again, it was really good. The atmosphere was surprisingly fun. The place is divided into two smallish connected rooms that seemed to have been recently renovated.
Given the charm of the hostess and the delicious food, the experience far exceeded our expectations. However, as I would recommend this place to anyone in the neighborhood, it should not be confused with a 4-5 star restaurant that "foodies" are attracted to. I wouldn't choose the word "best" to describe anything about Mythos on Montrose. Many Chicago restaurants far exceed this charming neighborhood venue.
Best Greek Restaurant in Chicago! – The best Greek restaurant in Chicago, as far as food and personality goes, is not in Greektown at all... it's MYTHOS! My favorite things on the menu are the Chicken Reganate and the Lamb Chops... they're absolutely delicious. I'm usually very picky about Greek food, being a Greek myself and being accustomed to my mother's cooking, and yet Toni and Vaso (a.k.a. Vicky) totally pull it off, with their great tasting food and warm rapport with their guests. Exoun to pio nostimo elliniko fai tou Sikago! ([in Greek] "They have Chicago's tastiest Greek food!"). If you like or love Greek food, or simply want to try it for the first time, you definitely need to go to MYTHOS! Also, although it's not a Greek dessert, Mythos has _THE BEST_ Tres Leches cake I've ever tasted... I get it every time I visit! After coming to Mythos, you'll never go back to Greektown. We love Mythos (could you tell from my enthusiasm? ;-) ) and we eat there 2-3 times per week; we're big fans (Mythos is about a 5-minute walk west of the Brown Line's Montrose Station; it's on Montrose Avenue, in-between Damen and Lincoln, on the north side of the street... the neighborhood is sometimes referred to as Ravenswood or Northcenter, and it's also very close to Lincoln Square).

Two personable sisters oversee operations at this romantically lit, azure-walled storefront frequented by foodies. Couples engrossed in conversation dive into pastichio served in individual glass dishes. Meanwhile, groups pass flavorful, charred loukaniko sausage and gigandes, massive butter beans in kalamata sauce. Souvlaki, chicken reganate fresh-made spanakopita appeases by-the-books diners.
BEST greek food! – First of all, the food is way better than greek town! Highly recommended, we ordered salad and chicken and it was so much better than we thought! the salads are big and SO delicious! The chicken is amazing, so mouthwatering we loved it! the host was so gracious and the cook even came out to see how we enjoyed our meal, needless to say we were speechless, the food is definitely out of this world!!!!!!
VERY DISSAPPOINTING. Food was overcooked, oversalted, overpriced; and VERY SLOW KITCHEN. – Our high hopes for this new Greek Restaurant in our neighborhood, were dashed. Very disappointing. We arrived early on a Friday night (6:15pm). Despite an empty restaurant, owner was pretentious about it being a busy night (tho she did have a party of 15 that came 45 mins. later), still it was obvious she had only a few other reservations, and many walk-ins came after us and got same "attitude". Next, they were OUT OF their signature dish ? Braised Lamb. How can a Greek Restaurant not have Braised Lamb (esp. a "signature dish")? As for alt. of ordering Lamb Chops -- way overpriced at $28 (table next to us ordered it later, which we saw were thinly sliced, and appeared overcooked). Next, Sagnaki is not flamed at table (they claim to flame in kitchen - dubious as no taste of brandy) and no fun. Our Entree of Roasted Greek Chicken was very salty and no ?greek? seasoning could be tasted; and our 2nd enree described as ground beef and lamb, were like 3 small hamburgers, and were grossly undercooked (even after we complained and it was brought back to kitchen for re-cooking, it was still dangerously raw in the middle). Egg Lemon Soup side was bland, with no lemon taste. Veggie side was june peas and tasted ?canned?. What happened to Okra or Eggplant as a Greek side (not even on menu). Finally, despite being the earliest customers to arrive and place our order, our main dishes did not arrive at our Table until 7:45 -- 1 1/2 hours after we ordered! NOT RECOMMENDED.
Up and coming Greek restaurant – The owner is a delightful, energetic woman who is determined that this be the best Greek restaurant in Chicago and by her determination, I wouldn't be the least surprised if she pulls it off. They've only been open a month so don't let my rating of 3 starts discourage you from going. The food was good. Not stellar. But good, hearty, well-seasoned fare. The dessert was awsome, though. Some of the servers appeared to be quite good but they're still breaking in some that could use some pointers when it comes to service. Wait another month and then give it a shot.
