Late-night Japanese comfort foods like noodles and yakitori can be found at this cozy Outer Richmond haunt. – Because sometimes you need ramen at midnight. Because sometimes you're craving sushi but don't have the dough for an extravagant meal. Because sometimes you want to overhear the waitstaff chattering in Japanese to lend that extra bit of authenticity. These are the reasons to visit Sapoten. It's not fancy (and it's relatively low prices reflect that), but it's got enough seating to accomodate a few small groups, service is attentive and portions are generous. Ramen arrives in a veritable punch bowl--a steaming mass of noodles with your choice of salt, soy or miso broth and various toppings--with a serving-size wooden spoon to slurp from. Salmon and beef teriyaki, with bowls of rice and miso soup, come on plates easily big enough for two. There isn't a huge selection of rolls, but they do have the standards as well as a fair selection of nigiri and an assortment of daily specials.

Pretty Good Skewers for Dinner or a Snack – Nice and homey feeling. The dining room is a bit narrow, maybe 12? wide, but that lends the coziness of the place. We arrived around 6:15PM, great time, there was ample seating, but around 7:00PM, the place began to fill up.

We ordered a 4 pairs of skewers (2 skewers per order), 2 order of nigiri sushi (mackerel & yellow tail) and the Sushi Combo.

For the skewers we had (1 order each): beef tongue, salmon with bacon, deep fried salmon and lamb. The lamb order was actually 2 French lamb chops. All the skewers, except for the beef tongue, were excellent. The lamb was tender and well seasoned. The salmon were moist and flavorful. Beef tongue is supposed to be tender, but these skewers were grilled and they became a bit chewy.

The Sushi Combo consisted of 6 pieces of ?California Roll? and 7 pieces of nigiri, chef?s choice. The ?California Roll? was not your usual ?California Roll?, there was no avocado and they used I think some sort of sprouts. The 7 pieces of nigiri included squid (Ika), octopus (Tako), eel (Unagi) and shrimp (Ebi). All the sushi was pleasantly presented and tasted fresh.

Price is reasonable, except for the soda. They charged $4.50 for a can of Diet Coke. For all the above food, we paid $53.00 before tip.
