Friday night dinner at Pam's Kitchen!
Three of us hit Pam's at about 6pm. Trinidadian food was new to all of us, but when we walked in it smelled great so that's always a good sign. I started with a ginger rum punch. OOOOOOOh baby, it was gooooooooood. I want the recipe! The kick of the ginger was just the perfect complement to the sweetness of the rum.
Next up: I ordered the curried chicken roti with paratha, a thin fluffy roti with a flaky croissant-like texture. The chicken was either light and dark meat mixed or all dark meat, and had a nice flavor and a good kick of spicy heat. The potatoes and chickpeas were okay, but not really well-seasoned so I focused instead on the chicken, sauce and paratha.
The paratha deserves its own paragraph. It (other than the ginger rum punch), was far and away the standout of the meal. I pretty much inhaled it, mostly on its own but occasionally dunked in the chicken sauce. Buttery, yeasty, warm and perfectly soft, melt-in-your-mouth good. I could have made a meal of it all by itself. Next time, I think I'll do just that.

We're not in Seattle anymore – This place is legit, spicy caribbean food. Different from any other seattle restaurant, it's a nice break from the same old seafood and other seattle places. Get the jerk-chicken, or the chicken roti. Sometimes they have live Caribbean music too. When I went they even had homemade ginger beer, and it was amazing. They have homemade juices, authentic Caribbean island food, good stuff
A Real Man Orders the Goat! – WOW! I need pam's kitchen like a fiend needs his crack pipe...okay but seriously its unbelievable. The goat parantha is definitely worth the dollar more they charge you. I was worried at first that they left the bone in, but after i saw how juicy and tender it was and how it literally ws falling off the bone, it was a non issue! the portion size is second to none too. for someone who's appetite is near insatiable, it only takes one entree to keep me happy. The people who work there also add value to the experience. From the waitress (pam's daughter?) to pam herself, the staff is upbeat and in a surprisingly chipper mood for how busy their restaurant is ALL THE TIME.
All i'm trying to say is Pam's Kitchen or NUTHIN!
Liquid Sunshine – WOW! This is an absolute dive that is a piece of Trinidad nestled in the U district. Inside you will find great music that will puit your mind to the Caribbean mood. Their menu is limited but it is all full of flavor that you will be pleasantly surprised. The J--K (ifor some reason Citysearch won't let me use this word) chicken is truly spicy, but it sneaks up on you. The roti is just amazing. I had the chicken roti and you get to choose the type of bread that comes with it (both equally tasty, soft, and unique). They have homemade hotsauce that is such an exquisite flavor, we had to just buy a bottle. They have different drinks like Mauey (rootbeer flavor with a bite) and pumpkin or peanut drinks. Great beer selection. Interesting deserts. Excellent service!
Exceptional food and service – My husband and I walked to Pam's Kitchen on a snowy night when many of the shops on the Ave were closed. We came to the door and saw that, although there were people dining in the place, their "CLOSED" sign was illuminated. We figured they were closing early and started to walk away, but the proprietor came out to the street and told us we could have dinner if we wanted. So nice. The food was excellent! All of the folks there were friendly and the service was exceptional. We will be back soon.
Favorite restaurant in Seattle- period. – First and foremost, PAM'S IS GENERALLY CLOSED ON MONDAYS. Thought people should know that since the listed hours here on CitySearch are wrong.
Pam's is my favorite restaurant in Seattle. Why? First of all, the owner (Pam) and her son (Anton) are almost always there, and are extremely kind and genuine. The first time I went there with my boyfriend, he was in heaven eating their superb Jerk-chicken, and when Anton saw how much he enjoyed the dish, he told his mom. She then came out and spoke to us about how much she loves cooking, how flattered she was to see us and others enjoy the food that she described as "coming from the heart." They have amazing high-quality food for a very low price. The atmosphere is great- vibrant colors, happy beautiful calypso music always playing, a steel drum above the small bar. I never see anyone in a bad mood in this place. And everyone is always moving at least a little to the beat of the music.
The food itself is a wonder all it's own. I try something new almost everytime I go, and it's always delicious. The style of taste is home-cooked Carribean-Trinidad. Most of the dishes are fairly spicy but do not sit too heavy in the stomach, as the ingredients are all high-quality. The most amazing thing about Pam's food is her meat- the meat in roti, the jerk-chicken, the meat in her Sunday stew special and her seafood specials are all tender and juicy. The Paratha (a soft bread that tastes similar to biscuits but has a fluffy texture) and the salad is also very good.
You definitely want to give this place a try sometime.
I LOVE THIS! BEST ROTI AND SERVICE! BEST FOOD! – I came here ever since this place first opened. I was one of their first customers with one of my friends. We had our first Chicken Roti, and come back every weekend to eat here. This is the best roti I have had in a long time. A roti is a trinidad wrap, inside has curry, potatoes, chicken...
It's very hearty! So be sure to come hungry or just share one roti.
Prices are average... 9 dollars all together for one roti if you are really hungry. I guess if you eat out everyday this would be more of a every other day or every other week sort of thing. BUT it's really good! Come prepared for something new!
Wonderful family-owned eatery! – I've been here on a few different occasions and Pam has THEE best food on the Ave! Not to mention hands-down the best Caribbean style food in the city. The food is authentic and so delicious, and will fill you right up without putting a hole in your wallet. I promise you will become a repeat customer! Absolutely DELICIOUS and wonderful customer service!

Wonderful change of pace! – This was such a refreshing combination of food textures and flavors. The atmosphere was casual and a bit noisy like you might expect at a pizzeria. Afterwards we got to meet the owner and chef, Pam, and found out she is passionate about makes everything from scratch. Reasonable too. I can't wait to take other folks there to experience the yummy flavors!

The clash of yellow, red and blue paint lends the space an airy feel that is refreshingly Caribbean, and decidedly unlike most of this city. The menu doesn't stray far from the main attraction: roti a Trinidadian wrap filled with curried meat and potatoes, which weighs more than some newborn babies, so feel free to split it. For variety order a "bust-up-shirt" roti (named so for its appearance) that is presented more like a meal to eat with a fork than a street vendor's handheld creation.
