Don't waste your time going to school here!!! I did and haven't landed the awesome salon position that they told me was possible to get with my education. The school is nice looking, they work you hard. You pass the state boards, however the day after you clock out for the last time, It's like you don't matter to them and they DO NOT assist you with finding employment. They say they do... And don't. I worked hard, studied hard, was an active student, got good scores on my tests, finished on time, went to classes regularly, did everything right while I was there AND still haven't found work. It's like they groom you to work for Dosha only and don't prepare you for any other type salon setting or leasing. Apparently all the students there are are dollar signs to the people who run the school and they just keep on churning us out in quantity... Not quality. Don't waste your time going to school here.... For a school that says they are the Harvard of Beauty Schools... They aren't. If I could get a refund on my education and go elsewhere, I would!
I have been to Aveda several times and always had a great experience, until recently. I had a terrible color and cut. The color was placed weird, uneven and not the correct shade. The cut was also uneven and the layers were terribly disconnected. A professional had to cut a lot off and add three colors to correct the problem. Furthermore, Aveda was very unhelpful in fixing the problem. My only option was to get it redone by the same student and wait over a week to do so. While they may do a good job at times, it is not worth the risk to your hair and your pocketbook! I'm uploading a photo-its the red one. (P.S. It cost me $200 at a reasonably priced salon to get it fixed).
I have been trying to grow out my hair but needed it thinned to look less bushy during the awkward grow out process.I got my hair cut for the first time at Aveda and what a nightmare!!!! It's so short now it stands straight up. It is several different lengths and some parts as short as <1/8". The worst part is I have a bald spot the size of an egg above my right ear now. You can see my scalp! The stylist burned me with a hair dryer trying to get my hair to lay flat with just a massive amount of product on it. The instructor did not check the cut at the end or make any corrections which I thought was required by law, although perhaps that is just industry standard. I have had my hair cut by students at International Beauty School for over 10 years and always had a good experience there. I will never go to Aveda again! I talked to the Manager Tonya but they could only offer sympathy and free services by MORE STUDENTS which obviously is not an option. NO REFUND, NO FREE WIG/EXTENSIONS, NO FREE PRODUCT TO TRY AND MANAGE THIS WRECK. The stylist did not offer an apology and had the nerve to tell me my hair was cute and said she would like to have this hair cut. Then she asked me to be a model for a Brazillian wax. Can you imagine? She would probably "accidentally" manage to remove my uterus!
This school should train people better before they work on the floor. The instructors should be available at all times and check every client before they leave. And they should just plain kick out incompetent students who pull stunts like this. Anyone with common sense knows not to cut hair so short it stands up. And everybody knows nobody wants a big bald patch on their head that makes them look like an idiot with mange! I am not kidding, I look like I have a disease and have to go to work like this in the health care field. Aveda messed up my life pretty bad.
Such a great haircut and SO cheap!!! – So, I'm new to Portland and need to find a new dry cleaners, vet, supermarket, doctor, yada, yada, yada.
Called up my expensive and very talented stylist back in Atlanta and asked her what she thought about trying the Aveda Institute. She was totally against it, but I decided that as a NEW client, I could spend a fortune somewhere else and still be unhappy. Well, long story short, I called, I got in quickly, I was seen promptly and my cut (short, multi-layered and I have lots of hair) was done under the supervision of an Instructor who was wandering about. I'm thrilled and it was cheap. I will be returning to Mikayla in 6-8 weeks when I need it cut again and she will be doing my highlights at the end of the month. VERY, VERY PLEASED.
Worst Experience In Spa Services Ever – This was a terrible experience and potentially an actionable one.
I went to Aveda for waxing (yes, I am vain enough to wax) services. It's a school so I wasnt expecting 5 star treatment, but what I got was an injury, insult, and then some.
The wax was performed by a student who pulled wax slowly off the skin so that I felt each hair ripped out individually. Then, the student tweezed remaining hairs, then scrubbed at my newly waxed skin with a rough cotton pad. She caused bruises to my skin by picking, poking, and stabbing at my skin to get the wax off and I had to ask her stop waxing. When the instructor came in, she saw the tears rolling down my face from the pain and immediately started saying how no one has ever complained about the student before, and blaming me for having too long of hair (I have never heard that before in my life, and I have been waxing for 7 years). She then made me pay for the "service". The next day, I called and complained. The guest services manager thanked me for the "feedback" and said that it would be helpful for training. I told her I wanted a refund and she refused, I asked to speak to another person who could help me and she said there was nothing more I could do and hung up. Worst customer service experience and most painful wax of my life.
WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! NO STARS!!! – A one star rating is too good for this experience!
The only reason I went here was to help out my sons girlfriend, they told me she needed someone with "virgin" hair. The only time my hair has been colored was freshman year when my hair got a little too bleached out and my Mom said I looked like a skunk. She proceeded to die my hair so black, I swear it had blue in it. I've told this story many times and vowed then to never let someone do that to me again!
So, I thought, this girl has known me for a couple of years, she knows that I'm pretty earthy, wear my hair in long braids most of the time, I hardly wear any makeup, I have a strong interest in Native American traditions, etc. I made the mistake of saying I would trust her with my hair. I was told she wanted to do 1) highlights 2)something non-permanent so I went in and did it.
Apparently, this school does not teach you to use your brain at all because I walked out with black hair that was blown out straight. I should have ran when I got there and she showed my black hair with red highlights! Of course the instructors liked it (they have black hair too!).
If you want to look like whatever the latest haircut to learn is, go there. But if you are an individual, ran....fast!
I normally do not complain like this, but this has been truly THE WORST experience EVER and now I need to find someone to get me back to normal.
Hitt or miss: get a referral or go on a weekday – Keep in mind this is a school, and that students are learning as you go. Your service, whatever it may be, will probably take more time than if you went to someone with more experience. Licensed instructors usually come to check in with the student before a cut is made, and before styling begins to check the quality of the cut. If you go during a busy time, instructors may skip you (eep!) or be rushed and not have time to help a student fix something. This also contributes to veeeery long haircut times.
I've had a great cut there, so-so cuts, and one that was completely awful. The stylist who gave me the great cut graduated and moved to a new job - congrats to her! My so-so cuts were not bad enough to complain about - just not quite what I was looking for. They were with beginning students who were open to hearing what I had to say, and willing to make an adjustment if I asked.
My awful cut was with a woman named Magdelena, and while she did a good job of cutting in some layes to my long, wavy hair, she cut 3" too much because she kept making mistakes. I asked for my side-swept bangs to be trimmed slightly, and she cut them so short that they rest a quarter of an inch above my eyebrow. "Oops. Is that too short?" IS NOT something I want to hear! Since this was on a Saturday afternoon and the whole place was busy, the instructor came before M was done cutting my layers (pre-bangs destruction) to give her a go-ahead to style. M promised to do my hand ritual and massage at the end because she didn't do it in the beginning to the instructor, and never did it. I asked from the beginning that she style my hair wavy (like I do every day) and she had no clue how to do it, and when I told her how I would style my hair, M insisted my hair wasn't wavy because she couldn't get the product to work so my hair mustn't be as wavy as I thought, and she thinks she'll dry it straight instead. After 2 hours of sitting with her, I was done, and the only instructor I found to talk to about my concerns was with a potential student and couldn't talk with me.
I think I'll spend the $40-50 and go to a salon with someone with experience and a guarantee that I will be listened to. My hairstyle is a big part of my image as a professional, and I need to feel confident and fashion-forward in my career.
Best armpit wax of my life! – I made my appointment mid-week and showed up on Saturday afternoon for my waxing services (I live within walking distance, so I did not have to deal with parking). I had an absolutely wonderful time getting to know the student who did my waxing! I believe you have to take it for what it is--a school--and if you do that, you'll have a great time there.
This young lady gave me the best armpit wax I've EVER had. EVER.
As for the staff, I think you've got to hand it to 'em. When I came in I think almost every chair was full and all the spa rooms as well. That's a heck of a lot of people to take care of in one place and I think they do a pretty great job of it.
As always, the products are amazing (especially the tea!).
I'll be back for sure!
A NIGHTMARE IN DISGUISE........GO TO PAUL MITCHELL SCHOOL!!! – I arrived ONE MINUTE late (at 5:16pm) for a 5:15pm haircut and they turned ME AWAY!!!!!!! Show's the ridiculous lack of customer service and egotistical state of the MANAGER that works there.
Thought it would save money and be nice, but there are just EXTREMELY RUDE AND INCONSIDERATE people working there.
Horrible Experience! – I had scheduled an appointment today for a cut & weave. It did take the stylist 3 1/2 hrs to weave my hair however she's a student so I'm not going to complain. She took me to the wash bowl & left to grab something.
When she came back, she informed me that she wouldn't be able to cut my hair because her manager said that the staff goes to lunch @ 1:00. I would have to come back another day for a cut.
I felt like I was being kicked out, & that I didn't matter. A manager should've come over to explain the situation to me. It was apparent, that my appt took longer than all the others. What a poor example they're setting for the students. (Customer Service does matter.)
