This tiny neighborhood coffee shop delivers an espresso shot of life to the mostly residential west end of Fountain Avenue. – In Short
A refreshing escape from the coffee shop-cum-boardroom vibe that's infiltrated SoCal beaneries, this tattered and homey Indian-inspired house is a throwback to days of quiet studying and contemplation. Stone Buddha statues trickle water while chill out tracks from Thievery Corporation and Zero 7 waft overhead. The atmosphere here is peace and quiet as an eclectic crowd of neighborhood artist types hunch over small tables, cracking textbooks or laptops with Final Draft. In contrast, Hollywood go-getters, wandering in after acting class next door, provide plenty of lively people watching opportunities. Late morning and early evening drink discounts make it easy to afford a dessert from the bright display case.
Long hours (sometimes until 1am) make Om a friendly late-night destination if you're just not ready to go home; also, the occasional live acoustic set nicely separates this place from its mighty chain competitors.
The space is charmingly intimate but, then again, cramped. Finding a seat in the evening hours can be a burden and you might be forced to share a table with a stranger. This can be the beginning of a beautiful friendship--or crumb-fueled rivalry.
OMg -- it's only okay. – The location is great (I live two blocks away) but unless I'm able to nab one of only two decent sized tables, I don't like to write here. I wish they'd trade in the cushion/bench doodad and tiny tables for more full-sized furniture. The hot-tea and iced tea (my drink of choice) are good; the baked goods, only so-so. I like that the staff lacks LA attitude; but they're also pretty slow behind the counter. The free Wi-Fi is great and the eye candy coming in and walking by is a nice distraction.
Bottom line -- if it weren't so close, I probably wouldn't go here -- but in the neighborhood, it's a good mom-and-pop choice.
