I came to Sears Auto Center in Santa Barbara to buy a new battery and have it installed. My car requires that power be maintained to the computer during the battery change, or else the computer resets. I called Sears and asked if they have the equipment (Memory Settings Saver) and was told that they do. I came and left my car for the battery change, and confirmed multiple times with the advisor that power will be maintained to the computer during the battery change.
When I came to pick up my car, I was surprised to notice that my automatic keys no longer opened my car (both sets of keys). I asked the tech if he kept the power to the computer during the battery change, and he said no because he was not told to do so. I asked the advisor if he told the tech to keep power to computer, and he admitted that he forgot to tell him. This was an annoyance because I had to go to my car's dealership the next day to have the computer reset, but mistakes happen and the advisor was apologetic, respectful, and admitted to forgetting to inform the tech.
However, when I asked to speak to the manager, I was appalled as I had never received such awful service anywhere, ever. When I asked if I still had to pay the $20 service fee even though the service ended up causing me more problems than I came in with, he told me yes with a smirk and walked away from me. I asked him for the name of the advisor that forgot to tell the information, or the name of the tech, and again he rudely told me "no," walked away from me with no explanation and ignored me completely. He told me there is nothing he can do and disappeared into the back room.
I suggest that if you want to be treated with respect and decency as a customer, you avoid this Sears Auto Center location at all costs.
I have never written a review for any business before, as it takes a lot for me to feel that service is bad. However, this horrible experience compelled me to make a Yelp account and write this review in order to save other hard-working customers wasted money and wasted time taken off work to go to their car dealership to correct Sears' mistake. Most of all, I don't want other customers to have to be treated with such disrespect and contempt.
Good Mechanics, Fair Prices – Ok, let's be honest: Sears is Sears. But I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that they do more than just change oil and swap tires. Truth be told, their CSAs (Customer Service Associates, as they're known) are a bit on the dim side and do their best to sell you services, but most of the time they're maintenance services that you actually do need. They could have more associates in the front, as there is almost always a wait, but when you consider that they have the lowest price for automotive labor in town ($85/hr as opposed to at least $100), it's a pretty darn good deal. In addition, Jose, their main guy in the back, is a font of knowledge and a pretty nice guy to boot.
Either way, you'll do better to talk with the actual mechanics in the back.
And as for the first reviewer who was complaining about brake noise, that is par for the course, I'm afraid. Whenever you get new pads on your car and don't turn the rotors, you can expect noise. Nothing really to do about that unless you want to turn the rotors. And though the work itself likely only takes an hour and a half, there probably was a wait, which again is probably why the customer waited. Four hours for a brake job is pretty common unless you take it to a slow shop, and then you must ask yourself 'Why is the shop slow?'.
Anyhoo, at Sears you get a warranty, the confidence that a huge corporation is backing the work that they do, and the best price for work in town.
incompitent mechanics – I went in to get new brake pads put on and ended up having to take my truck back three times, because they still were making noise! Finally I got fed up and brought my truck somewhere else where they were fixed the first time. You would think that I'de learn my lesson the first time. But since I get my business discount, I brought in another truck for a simple tire rotation and to replace the brake pads. This took 4hrs, when I was told an hr n a half. Once again I had to take the truck back in for them to adjust the brakes. I highly suggest not bringing your vehicle to sears Auto Center!!
People Steal – I went in for a simple oil change and tire pressure check. They did everything that I asked but unfortunately upon the return of my car I noticed that my Ipod, which was in the car (not a smart choice), was no longer in the car. I searched for a half hour, but still no Ipod. Unless it grew legs and walked out of the car, somebody in the mechanics garage stole it. Would recommend for the service but people steal in the garage.
