Not a big fan – The first time we ate here at Tokyohana, the place was empty and it was a bit boring being there while waiting for the shef. I don't know why I felt bored, but the atmosphere was just "blah" to me. The shef was nice though, and the food was decent. Staff were nice, but overrall, it was an okay experience. If I ever crave for some hibachi, this is probably the last place that is on my list to go. Sadly, but it's true :(

Never COME BACK – This is my first time and last time to have dinner in this restaurant. My boyfriend and me went there TODAY (which is Monday) because we bought the restaurant.certificate online and thought it was a good deal.

On the certificate, it ONLY showed the following special instruction "Minimum purchase of $40. Valid Sun-Thur. Valid for Dinner, Food ONLY. 1 certificate per party/table." We thought we would be fine since we went for Monday dinner. They alos have happy hour at 3-7pm on Mon-Fri.

The food was not fresh. The service was acceptable. But when we were about to check out, the waiter said we CAN'T use the restaurant certificate during the Happy hours. I asked the manager named STEVEN, there is no such instruction on your menu either on the certificate that says you can't use the certificate at happy hours. That means you are only allowed to use the certificate on Sun-Thu after happy hour ended at 7pm. He tried to look over the whole certificate for ten minutes just like he never saw that before, and just told me "it is so weird...they changed the rules blah blah blah..."

Then after the "public arugement" finally he said "ok...I will let you guys use it for this time Only." Five minutes later, while I was waiting my credit card came back, he tried to argue with me AGAIN and told me his boss said no or so. So we still CANT use the certificate even he just promised ok. Such a liar! He told me to complain with restaurant com about this issue. Why should I? It should be between you and the restaurant certificate website to clear out the rules, not me.

I will NEVER come back to this restaurant in my rest of life. The manager doesn't care about their reputation either. He told me to post whatever I like because he doesn't CARE at all. I don't mind to pay the full amount of the bill because it is silly to argue on the $25 certificate. But it is their fault, they should face and fix it instead of losing customers' satisfication.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY TO VISIT THIS RESTAURANT.

ESPECAILLY if you have their certificate, please RETURN it because it CAN'T be used!

Extremely disappointing – I had to send back 2 out 5 items I ordered. I really should have sent them all. The only thing I could eat was a seaweed salad, which they do not prepare anyway. The shrimp tempura had all breading and literally very-very little shrimp. I could not go past the first bite on my teriyaki calamari. When I saw the rolls I could not eat them, so unappetizing they looked. Talking to the manager explained everything. The guy has no idea of how the restaurant should be run and looks like he sleeps in his uniform.

Disappointing – The food here is forgettable. So we ordered a seaweed salad and calamari for appetizers. The calamari is probably the worst I've ever had. Not sure exactly how it's prepared, but I tasted like it came from a frozen aisle at a grocery store. I really like calamari, and order it pretty often, but this was the first time I've been to a place where they served it with ketchup. Technically, nothing wrong with that, but there are a slew of other sauces that are better with calamari. Also ordered some sushi that wasn't terrible, but at the same time, hard to find anything I liked about them. Lastly, we were in the mood for scallops, so we ordered some seared scallops. It was like 8 bucks or something for a few pieces of overly salty scallops that were flimsy (not seared/crispy).

Do not recommend!

Great Sushi and Great Hibachi – We have been to Tokyohana's many, many times, and I am surprised there are not more reviews on this place. We love the fresh made sushi at ths sushi bar, and I particularly love the Hibachi blue water seafood special. The scallops, shrimp and calamari are delicious. The service is awalys friendly and right on tempo. We have also been to the northside location, but I did not care for that location; trying to be trendy, with way-too-loud music. The SW Frwy location is more serene and much better suited for carrying on a conversation while enjoying great japanese food.

Repeat Customer. – Personally, I adore Tokyohana. It was responsible for my first sushi experience 3 years ago. I had only tried disgusting luke-warm buffet sushi before that and thought sushi as a whole was disgusting. Then I met some classmates for drinks and someone insisted that I try the Hot Mama roll, which is like the sushi equivalent of training wheels. It's crispy, with spicy crawfish and cream cheese, topped with pico de gallo and avacado. Trust me, it is SPICY, but everyone who has told me "I don't like sushi" has loved this roll, along with the New Orleans roll (which will ALWAYS be my favorite). I have family come in from Louisiana all the time, and they've all become believers.

Over the last few months, I've really expanded and sampled most of the menu. Now I get a couple of fresh-water eel or salmon pieces with my specialty rolls. My boyfriend likes the octopus. The LA roll is amazing, as is the FM roll, though we don't get that one every time since it's so fried. They have classics like the Caterpillar and the hand-rolls are pretty neat. And I will mention that I had a large birthday dinner there, and they accomodated myself and my guests very well at a hibachi table.

As far as service goes, I choose to look past the staff's short-comings because I'm so comfortable with the food and the atmosphere. The wait-staff can be flighty, sometimes you have to wave them down for a refill or to take your order (it's true, if you tell them you need more time they can disappear for longer than necessary). But the sushi chefs are QUICK and consistent. I like how they each have their own little flair when creating the specialty rolls. I always tip them well because they're more responsible for my experience than anyone else.

Sundays are the time to go, half-price appetizers and some rolls. They have a cool reverse happy-hour.

I love this place. It is my new comfort food. It used to be disgusting greasy drive-thru foods, so I'd say it's a step up.

There Are Better Sushi Places – I had heard that this place was great for sushi and had a good atmosphere, but after eating there last week, I can say that it's not really worth it when there are better places for sushi. We went late Sunday night (10 PM) and were seated pretty quickly. However, after telling our waitress we needed more time to look at the menu, she took longer to get back to us than we had hoped (or needed). It also took longer to actually get the sushi than we had hoped, considering they weren't very busy. The sushi itself was decent, but I have had better. Prices were decent and comparable to the quality of sushi.

Now, if that's where the Tokyohana experience ended, I'd have given them at least a 3-star rating, but that's not where it ends. The meal was $24.66, yet I checked my credit card balance a few days later and found a charge for $24.66 AND $29.66. They charged me twice for our meal. I called them to get the extra charge removed, but after four days, they have done nothing. I have called several times since Friday and each time they take my information and then tell me they'll "look into it" and call me back. The manager I spoke with on the phone seemed mildly unconcerned with the situation and generally cold. I've yet to hear back from them, so I now have to take it up with my credit card company to investigate the dispute.

If Tokyohana's sushi and service had been better, this whole process might not be as bad, but being what they are, they are not worth the trouble or the risk of going back there. Thanks for nothing, Tokyohana.
