A Cute Place, Friendly Staff, And Great Results – My husband and I just moved here from Denmark and I was looking for a good hair salon and colorist to color my hair. I found moko on Citysearch and had a great experience. Not only do I love the European design and feel of the space, but I really like that they carry organic beauty products and nice little spa items for the bath. I requested for Monique to do my color and cut, and she did just what I asked for. I found Monique and the staff to be very pleasant, professional and helpful. I live in Old City, so I will definitely make this my new place!
I absolutely love my hair and makeup – Last week I made an appointment at moko on the reccomendation of a friend. What a nice surprise! I made an appointment with monique for highlights and a haircut and for Gabrielle for a brow wax. I must say that my brow wax was the best I've had . Gabrielle was really gentle and friendly and described what she was doing the whole time. Afterward she even applied makeup and consulted with me on new colors to use.. I went to monique and she suggested some golden highlights and a bob cut. At first, I was nervous because I've never colored my hair before, but I was pleasantly surprised with the results. My color looks natural and today my husband commented on how nice my cut looks. I would definitely recommend this salon. I also left with some nice products. I bought some pretty eyeshadows that Gabrielle used on me and a scalp shampoo that smelled really good.
Worst haircut I've had in years -- I will never return – I went to Monique for a haircut today, and I cannot express how disappointed I am. I have been crying for the last hour, and finally got up out of bed to get my feelings off of my chest, and let others know to be careful when going to Moko for a new style.
I am having an emotional reaction, but when someone CHOPS OFF inches of your hair without your permission, and tugs and yanks at your hair for 45 minutes during the process, I think it's understandable.
When I came in, I showed Monique several pictures of haircuts that I had had in the past, and she and I both decided on a style that was a modified shag that would just touch the shoulders.
What I ended up with is a cut that looks like she put a bowl over my head and cut around it. The hair at the nape of my neck is less than an inch long -- it used to be below my shoulders. The longest hair on my head is a good 2 inches above my shoulders -- and I specifically commented on several occasions that it felt like she was cutting a lot, and that I did not want it to be short. I have a VERY round face, and this haircut just makes me look like a meatball with hair.
There is nothing that can be done to repair this haircut except wait it out. In addition to Monique's inability to cut my hair properly, her cutting style is very rough. Most stylists pull down on your hair at times to make sure that the sides are even. But Monique must have yanked my hair down about 50 times - I swear I had to take an Advil when I got to dinner. I almost thought that she was doing it on purpose, because in my 44 years of getting haircuts I have never felt such vigorous pulling and tugging! l will NEVER return to this salon.
I have thin, fine hair which used to be below my shoulder with some nice waves. What I have now is a bowl cut that is only 2 inches below my ears and shows a lot more of my scalp because of all the razor work Monique did.
I will NEVER return to this salon.
We are sorry to hear the reviewer had a bad experience at Moko! During the consultation, the stylist viewed three pages of digital photos the client brought with her and provided a cut that was actually longer than the choosen style. Monique has been doing hair for over 20 years and has never had anyone complain about needing advil after a haircut! Some scalps are more sensitive than others and we encourage clients to let us know if they are experiencing pain during their service.
Peace and love.
Best organic, all-natural, eco-friendly salon in Philly! – I got my hair cut by Monique and I could not have asked for a better job. I did some research on "green" salons in Philadelphia, but it is slim pickins'. Finally, though, I found the real deal - MOKO offers GENUINELY safe, environmentally friendly, natural products and services! The staff is very pleasant and willing to help. In addition, the experience was educational, fun AND relaxing. I left with some great natural products - go for the Max Green products, they're awesome!
Hair, Skin, Body – If you want "Color and Cut by someone (MONIQUE) who has the Expertise, Knowledge of Products, Attentiveness to Service, and possesses the Charisma that entices you to return again and again for the Ultimate in Personally Gratifying --one on one, genuinely sincere-- Experience", you want to visit MOKO. This is, without a doubt, the most attentive, knowledgeable, and refreshing establishment in Old City---- they have what it takes to make YOU feel 'special'. The products are all organic (and really 'fresh and innovative' when listening to the descriptions by a well-educated staff) whether it's hair care products, makeup, or skin & body. Based on a scale of 1 to 10---- I give it a "15"!
The most charming place in old city – I absolutely adore this new addition to old city. It's really beautiful on the inside and the staff is really friendly. You don't feel intimidated when you walk in, which is nice. I decided to get my haircut by Monique and it was a pleasant experience. She did a great job. I also love the fact that I can buy beauty products and makeup here...something previously missing from the neighborhood. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Meg. We're happy that you enjoyed your service.
Unique and pretty – Located on a beautiful Old City block, this place is so pleasantly different from most hair salons. Here, all products are thoroughly selected from a bunch of organic/natural retailers' lines; you won't find noxious chemicals anywhere near your head. Monique always does a fantastic job with my hair and is generally a delightful person. Dawn did great with my make-up and taught me techniques that I am now using myself; very professional and totally unlike the Clinique counter ladies at the department store whose sole mission in life is to sell you as many products as possible. Overall, a beautiful and happy place, I love going there.
Thank you Stella! We really enjoy having you as a client and it makes us happy that you like being at Moko!
See you soon!
