Perfect Venue for a Birthday Party! – I just had my birthday party at Elizabeth last night and it was absolutely perfect! They gave us the entire back patio, which had it's own bar and coat check. The space was beautiful and comfortably held all of my guests (~80-100 people when it was most busy). The best part was that the manager, Sam, and the rest of the staff were SUPER nice! No bar minimums, no hassle at the door, no cover and they even allowed us to control the music. I highly recommend this venue for any event (and I don't say that often about most places!).
Best Burger in NYC? Possibly. – I have to say, I am a total burger snob and this place passes my test, big time. Huge grass fed beauty with sesame seed bun, special sauce, lettuce, and a crispy cheddar wheel that looks like it landed from space sticking out from the bun. Whoa.... Garlic fries were perfect too. Yum.
I loved it – I had my 30th b-day party in the garden the other night and it was awesome. They put together a special menu for our group and it was served "family style"--so everyone tries different dishes. Anyway, people were raving the next day. Would definitely go back.
TOTALLY OVERRATED! – I had dinner at Elizabeth on Thursday, September 18. The place was full, but not overly crowded. I had eaten here before and had a perfectly pleasant meal, but the scene and food quality seem to have vanished. This evening, everything seemed to be off. The service was slow and we could never find our server when we wanted her. My choice of a main course was the Sea Bass, which was roughly 3 ounces (and also ~$30). I asked the server if there was a mistake, and she informed me that this was the actual size and that everyone complained about it. I then asked to see the manager. I asked him if this serving was a joke. He told me that it was not and offered to get me another piece. This piece arrived about 10 minutes after everyone at the table had finished their meals, and then the manager informed me as if he were doing me a great favor that the extra piece was on the house. Wow....so generous! Another person at my table had the Salmon, which looked to be about 10 ounces, so I'm not quite sure what was going on with the serving sizes. The remainder of the evening remained choppy at best. When we finally decided to leave, I discovered that they had "accidentally" over-charged me on the wine. After this really marginal experience, I've decided not to return this mediocre dining establishment. My prediction here is that this place just doesn't make it.
Lame, almost embarrassingly so for SoHo/NoLita – In the 7 years I've lived in Manhattan I can't remember a time I've been more dissappointed with a place. Lackluster food, terrible service, completely generic decor, an F-list crowd and absolutely nothing worth coming back for. As a downtown guy I was actually embarrased to have brought people there who are from uptown as they probably noticed no difference from a typical Upper East side snoozeville restaurant & can now make a decent case for meeting up in the nosebleeds next time out. I also couldn't believe how few attractive people were in the place given the location but I guess that could be a good thing if you're someone who has a hard time paying attention to your date, haha. There are at least 10 significantly better destinations within a 1 block radius.
Cool spot! – I went with a group of 7 girls and it was perfect. The outdoor garden looks really nice. The indoors is trendy. There is a loungey area toward the back that seems like it would be perfect for drinks with a date. The food was good too.
Great service – We walked in on a Friday night with no expectation. We generally avoid "hip and trendy" places but the menu was concise and the decor interesting. The host was smiling, we were shown several tables before settling on one next to the door. We were so pleasantly suprised! Our waitress was knowledgeable and smiling, the busboy very pro. The food was prefect. We had the hamachi crudo, great flavors, and the steak tartare, which was unfortunately mixed, was pleasant enough. Then we moved on to the vegetable plate and the scallops. Both were very enjoyable. The dessert did it too, both the cheese plate and the excellent coconut custard with a novelty for me at least, black sesame ice cream. Loved it! We'll be back soon. And for single guys, it is a must! We never saw so many single girls!
Wow – What amazed me about this place, aside from the food, was how nice hosts were. Normally when you are in one of the 'it' restaurants on a sat night, you're treated w/ indifference at best. Your wait is viewed as it is at the doctor's office - even w/ a reservation, deal with it or leave, and by the way you should consider yourself lucky to even be there.
But they actually apologized more than once for our wait and gave us free drinks! Then another host (or possibly the manager) came over once we were seated and asked how it was going. We mentioned having waited a long time for our food after ordering, and he also apologized saying their computers had crashed. He then offered us bread while we waited. Our neighbors were so tired of waiting they actually left their table refusing to pay just as their food arrived.
But for me, decent treatment is a big plus. And the space was so pretty I didnt mind waiting a bit longer for my food. I was glad we waited bc the risotto was amazing. My friend enjoyed her steak as well. True the portions are on the small side, but that and the lack of seating would be my only complaints (there is a lounge area in the middle of the space with couches that should be replaced with dining tables/chairs, esp in a place this small). They need to decide if they are a lounge or a restaurant. Trying to be both just adds up to longer waits for dinner.
Modern decor, good service and mediocre food – Located just 1/2 block from my apt, I was eagerly awaiting the opening of the new Elizabeth (former Rialto). The new decor is dramatically different than that of its predecessor and a huge plus. The black and white mosaics and dim lighting sets the mood for a romantic dinner for two. The outdoor patio, which is decked out with clear plastic chairs (slightly resembling spoons), flowers and tiny white lights is an unbeatable location for dinner with friends. The bartenders and table servers are friendly and attentive which is a huge plus for a trendy eatery in Soho. A slight drawback, and albeit an important one, is the food. I strongly believe that despite the hype built around a new establishment, the main attraction must be memorable. For starters we had the green gazpacho (too tart) and tender lettuce salad (could not taste anything but the plain lettuce). Our main dishes included the scallops (flavorful but lacking a complimentary side) and the sweet pea risotto (good but slightly over-powered by salty cheese crisps). The best part of the meal was definitely the rice crispy treats dessert which came with a chocolate, peanut butter and marshmallow dipping sauce. Overall, I would give the ambiance an 8.5 out of 10 and the food a 6.5 out of 10 and I will likely return for drinks served with a smile.
Best Food Ever!!!!!!! – I went to this restaurant with very high expectations and was more than satisfied. I began my night at the bar and was amazed by how good the "double downs" were. Its a cucumber and tequila drink, and was so good. My friends and I then sat and ate in the outdoor garden. I got the chance to taste the gazpacho, salmon, garlic fries, ravioli, watermelon salad, beef tartare and scallops. Ive been to hundreds of restaurants in Manhattan, but have never tasted such interesting, delicious food in my life. The entire group that I was with was just as pleased. I will be back to eat at Elizabeth as many times as possible. The portions are perfect and the price was so much lower than I had anticipated. The place was filled with beautiful people but not in a pretentious way. The decor and ambiance were enthralling. My compliments to the chef. The food in this restaurant is so good that I felt compelled to write about it. Enough said.
