Nice place. I looooove me some cowboys! Great place to eat and awesome service
Fantastic Place – Went with a party of 8 celebrating end of hard year at work. The drinks flowed, the food was great, and the waitress flowed right along with us. All of her recommendations were very good, and she kept our night moving along. At the same time, there was no rush, and we were allowed to take our time, linger over our courses, and make a little noise (lots of laughter/fun).
Highlights were the sweetbreads, my scallop dish, and the specialty drinks. Will definitely be coming back, next time with my husband for dinner for two.
Quality food, amazing flavor, & staff that knows their stuff – Executive Chef Victor was very approachable, and the atmosphere is very comfortable. The food and flavors rival the best there is! I was also impressed with the staff, they really stayed on top of our service needs and knew everything about what they were serving. And hello.. yummy specialty drinks!!
Almost met my high expectations – We went to Cowboy Star on a friday night with a group/reservation for 6. Although excited about the restaurant, and initially impressed with the ambiance, I was put off when they did not want to seat us until our whole group had arrived (we knew one of our group was going to be late and had advised them of such when making the reservation). Once we were seated, the staff was very nice. The waiter made a great wine recommendation: the 2005 Provenance Merlot (which I enjoyed so much that I looked for at Bevmo later and found it to cost only $5 more at the restaurant than we would pay there for a bottle). The sweet breads appetizer was the best appetizer. I had the pork special for dinner, which turned out more rare than I would have liked. Everyone else had steak, but 4 of the 6 people in our group had recently dined together at Vigilucci's in La Jolla, and generally felt the steaks were better there than at Cowboy Star. Nonetheless, because of the fun aesthetics, downtown nightlife appeal, good service, and better food than many places we've dined, I would recommend to almost anyone that they try it at least once! (I'd also love to get down there when the butcher shop is open because I'm sure their meat quality is outstanding!)
Rawhide meets Soho. You gotta try this place. – I'm new to San Diego so I've been checking out various places to eat, so when my friends an family come visit me from NYC and Arizona, I will know the right places to take them.
I had a hankering for a nice steak so I tried Cowboy Star. Peter was an exceptional waiter with a lot of personality, and he made outstanding suggestions. I had the bison rib-eye and it was among the most amazing steaks I've ever enjoyed- no joke. Creativity exudes from every corner of this restaurant- from the peeled asparagus appetizer to the monogrammed paper towels in the restroom. It's on my list of favorite places to come back to!
WOW! – Dined here last weekend and had mixed expectations after hearing a little bit of buzz about the new Steakhouse in the East Village. After arriving I was liking the setup they have a butcher shop next door, a fireplace in the lobby, and old Country western Music playing in the dimly lit retaurant. The menu was unique and so we tried a variety of items and wow were we impressed. Started of with the sweetbreads and salad and then I had the Porterhouse that was the featured special, and my guest had the duck which was also very nice. Coming from a fan of the classics Ruth's Chris, Mortons, etc. I thouroughly enjoyed our meal at Cowboy Star and will be back. Definatly worth visiting next time you are in the mood for a great steak!
Part restaurant, part bar, part butcher shop: East Village's Texas-sized compond brings the wild West downtown. – In Short
In addition to the kind of cowboy-sized portions of bone-in rib-eye that you could only find east of Highway 67 (until now), Cowboy Star also brings what they call the "romance of the Old West" to the East Village. We're not sure how exposed wooden beams and big, bright, meaty butcher shop are supposed to get hearts fluttering, but the old-school cocktail list and sweeping landscape murals are nostalgic enough. But make no mistake, owner Jon Weber and chef Victor Jimenez are definitely doing something that hasn't been done yet on this side of the tracks.
