The 63,000-square-foot museum and its Daniel Libeskind-designed addition has become an integral part of this bustling, artsy block south of Market Street. – Adorned only by sparse square windows and dramatic orchestral music, the Contemporary Jewish Museum's main gallery pays tribute to its programmatic vision, used as a space for performances, events and artist installations. Its other two galleries house continually rotating exhibitions, from small-scale ink renderings to large-scale interactive art. In its mission to "bring together tradition and innovation in an exploration of the Jewish experience in the 21st Century," the museum draws inspiration from the Hebrew phrase "L'Chaim" meaning "To life!" And it shows. Recent exhibitions include unpublished drawings and sketches by New Yorker cartoonist William Steig.
Editorial Review by Patrick Heig – Designed by starchitect Daniel Liebeskind, this long-awaited cultural museum is one more modern, grandiose reason to visit Yerba Buena.
