Cupcakes Squared does it up in Red and Blue for the Presidential Election – November 5, 2008
I worked the polls on November 4. It's a long day, and anything that lightens the mood and breaks up boredom is welcome.
We had been working since 5:30 am. It was almost twelve hours later when a lady and a young man walked into the polls carrying two cardboard boxes. The lady knew one of the poll workers, and presented the boxes to him, I couldn't see what was in the boxes so I wandered over to take a look.
Two dozen square cupcakes, each with either a blue donkey or a red elephant were waiting to be eaten. The lady was from Cupcakes Squared and wanted to do her part to make this a special election in a special year.
She succeeded. Each and every one of us enjoyed the efforts of Cupcakes Squared. I saved my cupcake til after the polls closed, and shared it with my wife. It was delicious. The decoration was innovative and unusual, and totally in keeping with the occasion.
My hat is off to Cupcakes Squared. And here's to a true Obecian!

We aim to please – This is a reply to icecold... Hi this is Robin from Cupcakes Squared. I am so sorry for the experience you had at my shop. It was my counter girls first day and she was a bit confused and felt terrible about not properly preparing your order . Please e-mail me so we can make it better, if you would
accept our apologies. yum@cupcakessquared
Wouldn't go back – My husband and I pre-ordered a 1/2 dozen cupcakes. When we went to pick them up, we were informed that they "forgot" to pull 2 Lemon cupcakes that we had pre-ordered and had since run out of that flavor. We were already charged for our order and nothing was done to acomodate us for their mistake so we ended up choosing 2 other flavors. We decided to also buy a cookie which they rang up separate and told us we would be charged an additional $.50 for using a charge card when our purchase was under $10 as they had already charged us for our pre-order. The cupcakes were on the dry side, the butter cream tasted like whipped cream and the cream cheese frosting tasted like something out of a can. We rated this below average due to their poor customer service and won't be going back.
Incredible – I tried a lot of cupcakes, searching for something to serve at my wedding in lieu of a traditional cake. All the cupcakes I tried were pretty boring, nothing special. Then to my delight this shop opened in my neighborhood. The cupcakes are to die for. I tried a lot of different flavors, and ended up serving double chocolate, double vanilla and the fantastic coconut lime at my wedding. Robin worked with me to add fresh fruit to the top as well. My guests loved the cupcakes, and I ordered enough so that many took at least one home with them. Robin was wonderful to work with. I can't recommend Cupcakes Squared highly enough. Oh -- and the vanilla is unlike any vanilla you've ever tried.
Tasty cupcakes, but not worth the hype, and extra $$$ for the square shape is more gimmick than practical – Cupcakes are very popular right now, so when this cupcakery opened, I was excited to try it. The shop is quaint, though there is very limited seating. The location was easy to find, and parking is free and plentiful. Inside the shop, you are overwhelmed with their industrial baking equipment, and the dessert counter is dwarfed. Also, because they bake in small batches, the selection on the Sunday afternoon I was there was very limited. I ordered a lillikoi, a red velvet, and a carrot cake. The cupcakes were fresh, but they didn't seem uniform. Clearly, one cupcake was smaller than another, which annoyed me. I wasn't in love with the lillikoi cupcake, but enjoyed the other two. I would have liked to taste their other flavors, but the selection was limited.
The cupcakes were good, but for the cost, rather small. Gourmet costs more, but I did not feel these cupcakes were worth their cost. Plus, I felt the "square" cupcake was more gimmick than anything else. They weren't easier to eat, the frosting on top looked round like a regular cupcake, though the square shape looks cool in the square boxes. I am curious to try other flavors, but there are other bakeries with great cupcakes that would give this particular one a run for its money. I would eat it if you gave it to me, but I don't see myself making a special trip out there.
Great adult treat – While visiting relatives in the San Diego area they took us to Cupcakes Squared for what they said would be a treat. Boy did they understate the treat part. I have never tasted chocolate that just filled my whole being with joy and lingered in my mouth as I did with their Chocolate 2 cupcake. It wasn't sicky sweet, and sticky and sloppy moist like most commerical chocolate cakes, it was rich and dense and just heavenly. My husband tried the banana nut there, and fell in love with it. We bought 4 cupcakes to try at home and found that they were just as good the 2nd day, which is almost never the case with other cupcakes. The staff was as nice and helpful as could be and wrapped our take home cupcakes in a very unique and pretty box. I only wish they had a store near where we live in the San Fernando Valley. There's no way that we could visit the San Diego area without stopping there for a taste of heaven.
Seriously EXPENSIVE – I went to Cupcakes Squared - very excited they had opened in my neighborhood and walked out flabbergasted. I think I paid something like $12 for 3 cupcakes. 3 cupcakes!?!
But price wasnt the only issue. After hearing so much hype about the new "gourmet" cupcake shop, I was expecting more "gourmet" for my buck. The chocolate cupcake was medocre and had a very heavy, flour-ry taste. The vanilla one, the frosting was not impressive. Crisco with some sugar. Nothing special topped it (think sugared flower or/??) just frosting and cupcake.
The ambiance of the little shop was nice, but their prices were way out of whack.. and did not live up to the hype.
Yummy Cupcakes!! – Cute bakery, cupcakes were delicious!! The lemon cupcake was outstanding! I was also pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to find!
The Best Cupcakes In San Diego – Most original tasting cakes ever and there square ,If you love cake this is the place
