Reviews for Thoms Market

Thoms Market

A petite little grocer on Barton Springs Road that carries local Austin confections, blends up their own protein shakes, and let's you create a "mix n' match" six-pack of microbrew bottles.

what a wonderful place! – I go to Thom's Market every single day. I could not imagine a day without it. Somedays I go two or three times. The owners are ultra-friendly, and their hand-picked merchandise is always wonderful and satisfying. No, this is not a huge place, so they won't have every single thing you need. But, boy, the things they do have are DELICIOUS. Don't even waste your time to ask "is this product good?" because you can just rest assured knowing it is "the best" the owners have found (and they know food. They've traveled extensively, and know how to get the good stuff). No, you won't find Mannwiche or some crappy over-processed food you shouldn't be eating anyway. Yes, they might have to charge a few pennies more than some crappy big-box bulk-buy crap-a-rama store. And, no, they aren't trendy and don't sacrifice shelf-space for a wine-bar or fancy displays, but isn't that a GOOD thing???

This store is South Austin at its best. If you're driving or walking around and you've got the munchies or the thirsties, stop in, buy something you've never had before that is uber-delicious, uber-gourmet, or uber-old-school, and a cold drink, and talk to a real live human being behind the counter, and your day will improve at least 1000%. I think they could prove that scientifically if they tried, but they don't have to for me to know it's true. This store is one of the best things about Austin.

And, by the way, this store isn't that far from the Hike and Bike Trail, if you exit at the Barton Springs Bridge and go east on Barton Springs. What a perfect ending to a perfect stroll!!!

Pick up off-the-wall specialty foods alongside basic ingredients at this quaint Zilker neighborhood grocery. – In Short
Turning Barton Springs Road into more than just restaurant row, this locally owned mini market brings selective products to area epicureans. Run by the well-traveled Thom family, the former bait shop stocks everything from flavored agave nectar, Amy's frozen foods and local eggs to rare candies, fresh produce and a surprisingly diverse beer and wine selection. Bill and Beth Thom, who are regularly perched behind the 19th-century wooden counter, offer suggestions, recommendations and a little neighborhood camaraderie.
