Not Anymore ! – This place has really gone downhill !! The quality of the food has really gone down, while the prices have gone way up !! We used to go here once a week. We haden't been here for a couple of months due to illness, and when we went back, YUCK ! We won't go back there again. It's to bad, because we used to really enjoy it there.
Straightforward, family-friendly steakhouse menu and bargain prices draw steady carnivorous crowds to this Saugus landmark. – The Scene
Both of Hilltop's suburban locations enjoy year-round, capacity crowds thanks to a dependable meat-and-potato menu and prices that are straight out of the '80s (a full steak dinner, including salad and potato, costs about $12). Faux-western dining rooms are usually filled to the gills with families (good luck finding a table away from the kids) and are efficiently patrolled by notoriously sour waitresses.
When the restaurant's full, with table after table covered in chopped sirloin and broiled ribeyes, one gets the impression it single-handedly keeps the beef industry in business (no one's actually ever been seen to order the steamed vegetable plate). Quality is not on the level of the area's finest steakhouses, but only the biggest steak snob finds fault with marinated sirloin tips or juicy, slow-cooked prime rib. Boring sides like bland rice pilaf and wimpy baked potatoes seem like after thoughts, but at these prices, no one minds.
Looks can be deceiving – You might see long lines when you you drive by one of their restaurants, and upon waiting in one those lines (sometimes for up to an hour), you will find that the steaks are no better than one you could have grilled in your back yard in half the time, and for more than half the price. While the food there is not at all bad, I just find it hard to wait so long for something I could have done just as well myself. Save your time and buy a nice cut from their butcher shop (which is very good, and had an ecellent selection), fire up your grill, and grab a cold one.
this place is not the same as it was before the food is horrible and it is not worth going to. They need to something to get themselves back to the status of best steakhouse because right now i would not even recoomend my worst enemy to go there that is how bad it is.
It's back – Well it's been two years since I was at Hilltop so I thought I'd give it another try and I'm very glad that I did. I am pleased to report that the filets were generous and excellent as was the service. The three of us were very satisfied with our meals and the bill came to only $85 including drinks. I have been a Hilltop patron for over 30 years but have avoided it the past couple of years because they lost their way but I can say that they are back, at least at my last visit they were. So if you've enjoyed Hilltop in the past but have been staying away, I recommend you go back. If you've never been, then go. The menu is basic but if you want a really good steak without paying the astronomical prices of the high end Boston steak houses, Hilltop is excellent value, once again.
Good food. – Good lunch deals, big portions, and many sides come with it. Been going here for years.
UNBELIEVEABLE!!!!!!! – I HAD A WEDDING FUNCTION AT THE HILLTOP STEAK HOUSE LAST OCTOBER. IT WAS AN APPROXIMATE PARTY OF 120 PEOPLE. "EVERYTHING" WAS SUPERB. THE COORDINATOR, FOOD, DRINKS, CAKE, HOUSE DJ. I GO SO MUCH MORE THAN I PAID FOR. IT VARIED IN AGE FROM 2 YEARS OLD TO 87 YEARS OLD AND EVERYONE HAD A GREAT TIME. I COULD NOT HAVE HAD A BETTER DAY!!!
great sunday breakfast buffet – took the whole family on sunday, service and food was wonderful and very reasonable in price. kids enjoyed the characters which happened to be bob the builder.
recommend the sunday breakfast to anyone
Sad – The Hilltop used to be the place to go. The line was horrendously long, but only added to the whole expreience and the food was worth the wait. I have gone back twice in the last couple years as recently as Friday night. I was so sad, the Filet Mignon was disgusting. It had no flavor, was charcoal burnt on the outside and over done on the ends. The middle, although cooked rare as was ordered, was tasteless.
When my husband and I were dating we would go with friends on a Friday night, each order steak and split the Lobster Pie. Well now this "family" restaurant charges $40 for a very small lobster pie. I will never go there again. Once again, SAD!!!!
Not like it was – This hilltop is a far cry in which it was before... they have a hard time getting a well done pc of meat to a burned pc of meat.... I order med to well on my tips and it always comes bacl all most raw... alot of red... plus when they take the meat back they never give you a new potato...
