I do not recommend this place if you would like to have a dog. The way I was treated left me feeling bad and unworthy to adopt any of their dogs. I thought that I could let this go but unfortunately, the rude explanations left me angry enough to write this comment one month after I went in to the shelter for a possible adoption.

I told the skinny lady (I assume a lower manager) what I was looking for (a dog I would train specifically for service needs) and the type of dog I preferred. The conversation started out fine but when I told her that I had a lot of experience with dogs and that I responsibly bred and trained them, this person acted offended and was very rude to me. My husband was also taken aback by her insulting comments that all breeders don't deserve to have a dog and are essentially rotten people.

I could not defend myself from this attack and was summarily dismissed when another couple came in and they were treated to papers to fill out, which I never received when I went in to inquire about a dog. It's too bad for them, because the lucky dog I would have happily adopted would have received a forever home and been my traveling companion. The skinny lady's rudeness was unacceptable and NOT tolerated.

My wife and I had the best possible experience with the folks at Pixie Project when we contacted them about finding a new home for our boy, Booker. It broke our heart to give Booker up, but we had to do it, and our goal was to make absolutely sure he went to a loving home where he would be happy and well cared for.

We brought Booker in, explained our situation, and after seeing the care and professionalism the Pixie Project takes with the adoption process, we knew this was the right place. We went back to check up on Booker a couple of times and he was a happy little camper at Pixie Project, no problems whatsoever, while he awaited his new home.

We were happy to learn that Booker will be adopted by someone who truly fits his needs and will undoubtedly come to love him just as much as we do. Our hearts will forever be touched by our time with Booker. We are comforted by knowing he will continue to have a loving home with his adoptive parent.

The one negative review I see on Citysearch is actually case in point as to why we chose Pixie Project. You don't just cruise in, lay down cash, and adopt an animal at Pixie Project. Instead you are vetted to ensure the proper match between owner and pet. There are lots of considerations for each pet and it's not realistic to think that the online profile can include them all. We appreciate the fact that Pixie Project takes the time to fully assess potential owners and ask all the questions. Owners who find questions surprising or intrusive, don't have much regard for the needs of the pet. It's not the local pet shop, it's a placement agency.

Finding great homes for needy animals is what Pixie Project does. And they do it so very well. Whether you're looking for that perfect friend or re-homing a treasured pet, Pixie Project is a great place to start.

A Perfect Fit......... – Last year I lost my beloved Cat Simon.

A month had passed and I realized that my cat Lucy was grieving as well. I went to The Pixi Project because I drove by it every day and loved to see all the kitties in the window and I wanted to know more about them.

After meeting Hannah, I knew this was the place. Her compassion for the job she was doing was evident and I just knew I wanted to adopt from there. After many visits, Miss Hannah told me there was a kitty she wanted me to meet, saying she thought we would be a great match and with that she introduced me to a little fat, 6 month old, one eared, cross eyed, grey tabby named "Catfish Steve" and from the moment I saw him I knew that Lucy and I would be his forever family.

It has been almost 9 months since I adopted him and I love him more every day. Hats off to Hannah, Ted and the rest of the folks at The Pixi Project. You are all doing such a wonderful service helping these amazing little creatures find loving homes. Your love of the work is evident and I recommend adoption from The Pixi Project to anyone who wants to add a dog or cat into their family. Thank you so much Hannah for knowing instinctively, that little catfish was the perfect fit and he truely is.

Most Sincerely,

Elizabeth Deal

Easy, professional adoption – My boyfriend and I recently adopted a cat from the Pixie Project. The shelter is located on MLK, and they have a beautiful walk-in cattery where you can hang out and get to know the cats without looking through cage bars or fighting through hordes of people. Once we'd chosen a cat, they approved us quickly and efficiently. The price is a little higher than other shelters, but the cats are fixed, chipped and tested (and they give you a 10% discount on any supplies you purchase that day). Everyone was incredibly nice and professional, not to mention interested in the welfare of their animals. I can't recommend this place enough!

Great experience! – We adopted a dog from the Pixie Project and couldn't have been happier. The staff was kind, knowledgeable, and almost as excited as we were about getting our dog. They have an intense commitment to the animals, and for and owners, and making sure the pet is going to the right place and will be taken care of for life.

We were also amazed at how economical it was. Friends of ours just paid almost $1000 for a pure bred lab, and our dog plus all the supplies wasn't even a quarter of that. We continue to shop for all our pet supplies at their store because 100% of the proceeds go right back to helping the pets. They remember us (and our dog!) by name and are just the nicest people.

Best Adoption Experience Ever. Ever. – In meeting with the ladies at the Pixie Project to adopt our dog Newman, we found the most loving and supportive animal rescue staff I have ever encountered. Amy (co-founder) made it clear that if Newman were to be lost or stolen, we should call her and she would personally help us look for him. If we couldn't care for him at any point in his life, we were told to bring him back in, no judgment passed. Furthermore, she gave us her personal cell phone number, just in case something went wrong and we needed her to come to our house to check things out. I was dumbfounded by her love and dedication to each and every single one of the hundreds of animals that pass through her rescue project.

PP does indeed have an extensive application project, but I find this comforting in a way. For one, if you're not willing to take the time to fill out a questionnaire, are you really willing to take the time to care for your pet? Also, Newman had been in 4 different homes before we got him at 1.5 years old -- It would break my heart to see him returned and sent to yet another home -- this questionnaire and screening process are simply designed to make sure that the adoption is the right fit and that things like this don't happen... that all Newmans have forever homes. Some people truly don't understand the responsibility of owning a pet and the ladies at the PP want to make sure you have the whole story before you commit to the responsibility of another life.

I hate to say it, but sounds like the reviewer above is a little bitter at being rejected for a realistic reason -- We discussed this process with the PP ladies when we went through it and I was told that very few people are ever rejected -- but if they are, there is a reason... they're not just being mean.

Worst Adopt Agency ever, avoid – We came across a dog that we wanted to adopt off of PetFinder and requested more information via email. They told us to fill out the application and turn it in, that we couldn't meet the pet first. After filling out a lengthy application and answering what felt like a million questions we sent in the application. It asked questions about where the dog will be during the day and how much it will be left alone, etc.

I then got a response saying the adoption committee would reply within 24 hours. 48 hours later after sending two emails about what was going on, they responded declining our application for adoption. They said that the dog could not be left alone outside for extended periods of time, which was not stated anywhere on the pets information online. I then replied telling them it would not be the case that I would be home to walk it regularly and it would occassionally go to doggie daycare, but most of the time would be spent inside.

It took them another 48 hours to respond and this time they said it could not go to doggie daycare due to it not getting along with other dogs. AGAIN, not stated anywhere on the PetFinder website.

It just seems like excuse after excuse came up as to why we were not fit to adopt. My husband and I own our own home with a yard, no other pets and no kids, have even owned other labs in the past. We have plenty of time to spend with the dog and can afford one, so why deny us the right to adopt a dog????? Especially in this failing economy when most families can't keep their homes!

There are so many other animals out there that need adopting so we will continue our search. But beware trying to adopt from them. It is not worth your time to fill out the lengthy application and have them reject you for rediculous reasons.
