Didn't SKIMP on the SHRIMP!!! – I hardly ever write reviews, but after tonight I had to. I just took my wife to Momiji for her birthday. I asked my wife where she would like to go out to eat and more then anywhere else she wanted to dine here, We have been there before and the service was friendly, prompt and professional as always. The chef was entertaining and skillful and the onion volcano is always a sight worth seeing. I had the steak and shrimp hibachi which was fantastic. The steak was savory and cooked to perfection. Shrimp combos at many places come out tasting rubbery if not fresh and far too few besides. That was not the case here. The shrimp was delightful and they did not SKIMP. I am a big man and it takes a lot to satisfy me; Momiji's portions more than deliver. As far as price goes.you pay half that of other places for much better quality. I honestly believe they would give their food away if they could.
Horrible Service, Just Okay Food! – I've visited this restaurant 4 times so far, and the service was always horrible everytime I went there. Today, I ordered a chicken udon, and had to wait for 20 mins during lunch time. Last time they had a lunch rush, so it was understandable except my server didn't check upon me until I left the restaurant. BUT, today was not even busy at all (there was less than 10 customers). While I was waiting, my waiter didn't even check upon me until I asked him for more water. When I asked him for water, he stared at me for 30 sec like I asked him for something wrong. The worst thing was people who came later than me got their food way ealier than me. Don't go there if you are expecting a high quality service. The servers are horrible, and they just don't know how to serve their customers. The quality of food is just okay, and the price is not bad.
5 star food, 5 star service, very reasonable prices! – I was blown away by the quality of the food. I've been to a few other hibachi places like this, and they were nowhere near as good and about twice as expensive. The owner made some excellent suggestions about what to order. He recommended that we try the special, which was Tuna, and it was absolutely divine. I ordered lobster once at Kobe and it came out all funky and rubbery, but here at Momiji the tuna came out fabulously. It was flavorful but not fishy, and very tender and flaky. Honestly, the tuna here was better than the steak at Kobe!! My fiancee doesn't even like fish and he LOVED this tuna! NOTHING got burnt (which I found impressive since even Kobe usually burns something be it the veggies, rice, or meat). The staff was extremely friendly and relaxed, and the chef was very entertaining and competently juggled his cooking utensils. Oh, and the sushi was delightful as well! Actually, everything was excellent (the soup, salad, sauces, etc). The prices are extremely reasonable for the fantastic quality of the food. We had an absolutely top notch dinner for two for about $40 plus tip (we even got a sushi appetizer and sodas) on a Friday night. The decor is simple and pretty. They have a collection of beautiful parasols hanging from the ceiling which I enjoyed looking at, a few little fountains, and other nice touches. Another bonus is that there was absolutely no wait. They don't make you sit around for an hour waiting for the chef to come cook your food. They also have a kids menu, which I thought was a cool idea. It's nice to see a place like this cater to children. I want to bring my kid next time. Over all, I love this place and they've won a repeat customer for sure. Go check it out! (I don't work there and I'm not related to the owner or anything FYI...I just really loved this restaurant. Not sure what the negative review was about. Maybe works for the competition?)
Great restraunt for sushi rolls! – I had the pleasure of discovering Momiji Hibachi and Sushi less than a mile away from my house when I moved to Austin, Texas, and it turned out they had just opened! Everybody here is friendly and great to chat with while I'm waiting if I come at a slow time. They often offer water and soup on my to go orders so I don't have to stay hungry while I wait.
The sushi here is solid in terms of quality, although high end items like toro aren't on the menu. I believe their maguro is ahi (yellow tail, not blue fin). Where Momiji really shines is its rolls. I especially recommend the Almond Dragon Roll, which is one of the best rolls I've had anywhere! (And I've eaten at a lot, a lot of sushi places.) It's sweet, it's savory, and it comes with delicious wasabi mayo -- the buttery almonds themselves are lovely bursts of flavor that really compliment the rich taste of unagi. You will appreciate the variety and creativity of the rolls available, from sweet to spicy. And, of course, the inexpensive hibachi meals can fill your stomach while you sample sushi on the side! For a sushi cafe where I'm going for delicious flavor fusions and not going for nigiri or sashimi (fish on rice/fish without rice or any other topping), this place is top notch.
Good food, friendly service, good price – I planned on stopping by Momiji Wed. night after reading the first great six or so reviews, and when I read the ONLY bad review, I HAD to go to see what all the fuss was about. When I walked in I was met with smiles and "welome", and "glad you came in", VERY friendly and polite right from the start. Now let me say something right off the bat, this is NOT Musashino's, or Uchi, or one of the overproced, overdecorated places that dot this city. It is an inexpensive, friendly place where I received the most courteous service I've had in years at any restaurant. The owner was very concerned that we understood what we ordered, and even offered to comp us a soup since the "Hibachi", which this very american boy did not realize was "Teppanyaki" style, was going to take a little time to cook for us......a VERY rare treat nowadays!!
The sauces that accompanied the meal were excellent! The Ginger sauce was just right, flavorful, but not too strong, the Teriyaki sauce was not too sweet as it tends to be sometimes, and the mustartd sauce was hot, but not too hot....I personally thought it could have been a tad hotter, but then again, I LOVE hot and spicy foods.
The portions were huge for the price, the sushi was nice and cool and CRISP....nothing worse than mushy sushi, and the presentation was equal to that of any of those overpriced/decorated places I mentioned earlier.
Bottom line is GO HERE. it's GOOD, it's INEXPENSIVE, and the service is GREAT!! GO GO GO!!
Great Value and Pretty Good food – This place isn't meant to be Kenichi or Musashino. It's supposed to be inexpensive (which it is) and provides decent food. I think the rolls are reasonably priced and the lunch specials are a steal. If you want a good sushi meal, but not willing to fork out big bucks, this is a great place.
Below Average Food and No Service – I'm sorry but whoever wrote the other reviews raving about this place probably all work at the restaurant so don't believe them. My husband and I decided to try this place out since there was a coupon for 10% off and sadly, this place disappointed us in every aspect. The service was ok...food was so-so. I ordered sushi while my husband steered clear. Nothing to write home about. You would think that they would proofread their menu before printing but there were about 10 typos on there. Anyway, if you are low on money, then go here because their prices are not too bad. But if you want QUALITY over PRICE, spend the money and go to Musashino. That's what you call real sushi.
Momiji: A Hidden Treasure – I highly recommend Momiji Hibachi & Sushi for a couple of reasons. The first is the service. The staff is very knowledgeable of the menu and the food choices. My wife and I were greeted warmly and in a very friendly manner. The cashier asked if it was our first time there. When we answered that it was, he took the opportunity to explain the menu and make suggestions. For example, he discussed the hibachi section and provided us with options. After we had placed our food order, the wait staff brought out our food quickly and explained the different sauces to us. The great thing is that you can actual watch the chef prepare your meal. If I had remembered to bring my Flip camcorder, I would have filmed it. The ingredients were very fresh. The beef was very lean. We had order the steamed rice with our meal and it was perfectly cooked. The vegetables were done perfectly. Cooked, but still retained the crispness. We had the Miso soup and it was delicious and served piping hot. We also had the Gyoza (Pan-Fried Dumplings). Delicious as well. Full of meat and balanced perfectly with spices. There are a few things that may cause a person to rethink the visit. The first is the ordering process. There is an ordering counter. So, if you are expecting to order at the table, you will be waiting for a while. There is a TV there and the music is a little loud. It does remind you of a fast food place. I think that if they changed it a bit. When I have lunch, I like watching the news and listening to music. At night, I would suggest turning off the TV and using softer music. Just a suggestion. Aside from that, my wife and I will be returning for the sushi. Check out their website for the menu. You find it is very complete and has a great selection. We walked by the sushi case and saw that the seafood was very fresh and were quality cuts. Try the Mango Ice Cream for dessert. It is wonderful and is a great finish to an excellent meal.
Great chinese – Most friendly chinese restuaant in Austin, with a great choice odishes, contemprary style and good food. The fried noodle is great. And so far you dont hve to wait for a tanle.
Great atmosphere! – This refreshing new restaurant in north Austin has incredibly friendly service, and great food with presentation that you would only see at much higher priced restaurants. The atmosphere is nicer than you'd expect and fitting for any occassion. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of food you receive. If you've never tried Sushi or if you love Sushi this is the place to go. Now you don't have to go all the way in to Austin or pay ridiculous prices for great food and good atmosphere!
