I've lived in the North End for almost 10 years and have tried most of the restaurants up and down Hanover, Lucia's is the place I always recommend to friends and family visiting Boston. The food is always very good. If you're looking for traditional Italian fare at a reasonable price, this is the place to eat.
DO NOT EAT HERE - bland and putrid – Read the last reviewer's comments. They are very true.
Here was my experience.
My girlfriend and I stopped in on a Saturday afternoon to try an Italian restaurant in the North End. The menu looked promising and there were plenty of seats so we went in. Once seated, we were quickly brought water, which unfortunately was the highlight of the meal. Once we were seated and had ordered, I looked up some reviews but it was too late. This would be a putrid experience. We ordered bruschetta as an appetizer, which was simply toasted garlic bread. Pizza Hut serves better garlic bread. I ordered the Tortellini which tasted as if it came straight from a frozen food store. On the bright side, it was warm when served (despite many on here saying their food was served lukewarm). On the down side, it tasted more like macaroni than tortellini. For $16, this was far and away the biggest rip off of my life. My lady friend ordered fettucini alfredo -- which oddly (sarcasm) tasted just like my meal. For $14, again complete ripoff. You can get the same meal for $1 in boxed macaroni. Please, PLEASE, stay away from this restaurant. The service was no better than the food. After bringing the check, our waiter took 6 minutes to come back and pick up the money despite A COMPLETELY EMPTY RESTAURANT. Then, he took another 5 minutes to bring me my $10 change. As he seemed like a nice guy, I left a $1 tip but felt I was throwing away my money even doing that. In short, for those who live in or visit Boston, do not go here. There are so many good places to eat but this is not one of them. Just having a nice looking place and sprinkling cloves on boxed/frozen meals does not make your restaurant a classy establishment. The owner/manager should look into other business ventures.
Do not make this mistake! – If I could give less than 1 star for this ridiculous establishment, I certainly would do so. I rushed home tonight after dining at Lucia just to write a review so that no one else has a similar experience. I arrived tonight with a friend to dine at around 7:30pm. The service from the start was pushy, though there were only 3 other occupied tables. The food was mediocre at best; the meal began with a bland salad, and progressed to a chicken dish and a seafood dish, which were accompanied by pasta from a box in the supermarket, presumably.
However, the real treat began at the end of the meal. I paid the $75 bill with a $100 gift certificate. As I have waitressed at four high-end Boston area restaurants before, I assumed that I would be issued a gift certificate for the remaining balance, as is customary with every other restaurant I have ever dined at or worked at. Not at Lucia, though. Instead, I was informed that my gift certificate would not be re-issued in any way; in fact, I would be basically eating the remaining $25. I asked the manager politely why this was and if that was the policy, said that we would like to order something else. We were told that we could not order something else (dessert, coffee, wine, or any food to go), though we were never told of this rule beforehand. The manager and the waitress rudely left our table before they could answer our questions about why such a policy is in place, or at least, why this rule was not noted on the gift card. Of course, I knew that no cash would be refunded. I just simply wanted an explanation of why this was the case.
I will certainly never dine here again, and will make certain that none of my family or friends ever make the same mistake of dining at Lucia.
Sometimes Locals Need to Get Out of Town More – My girlfriend and I were visiting from NY and wanted to find some good Italian food in the North End. We had been driving around for a while looking for a parking spot. We asked a local walking a Bassett Hound which Restaurant he thought was good. He pointed us to Lucia and said "they've been around for over 30 years".
The calamari was overcooked and the gravy was terrible. It burned our throats from too much spice and made us feel sick. We asked for a more mild sauce and it was average. Nothing special. We ordered the Lucia veal dish thinking that it would be safe to go with a namesake dish. Wrong again. The meat was overcooked, and the penne was undercooked. The service was good, but the food and value were really disappointing. If you are ever in NY, compare this place to Carmines and you'll understand just how bad the food was at Lucia. If I had it to do over, this fat little piggy would rather eat his own shoes.
Pros: Decent service
Cons: Quality, cost, portions. Find an Olive Garden instead!
Outraged, this has never happened to me, DON'T BOTHER – At first this restaurent seemed like a good choice, visitIng the Boston area from San Francisco we decided to give this restaurant a try. My son and I sat down and ordered a very basic meal, salad and entre meanwhile everyone around us would come and go and we had yet to be served even our salad, I asked our waiter Massimo when we might be served, just a few minutes more he replied after 40 minutes we finally had our salad, the meal was awful, the pasta was so hot and overcooked as if it had been sitting under those heat lamps forever. Disgusted we paid the bill and left a minimal tip, I wanted to leave no tip at all but I felt that was not fair to the waiter well can you believe that when I recieved my credit card statment they had changed the amount of the tip I had left and helped themselves to double the amount. Never has this happend to me where a restaurant has changed the tip amount, LUCIA'S YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED!
The Best Restaurant in Boston – I have eaten -everywwheeere- in this city, and nowhere leaves me more satisfied than Lucias.
More than reasonable prices. Beautiful, authentic and cozy atmosphere. Knowledgeable and friendly staff and management (they even stayed open very late for my 21st bday). Great wine list. And most importantly, the food is AMAAAAZING !!!! There is nothing on the menu you will not like, and the chicken marsala is better than any I've ever had, in Italy, in NY's little Italy, at my Italian best friends grandmothers house, anywhere. I have never had a bad time or a bad meal or a bad glass of wine. I will continue bringing all of my friends here.
Fantastic – I took my girlfriend to Lucia last night. It was the first time either of had eaten there, and we were very impressed. Our server Christine(a) was great. she recommended a veal dish for me that came with a lemon sauce and i was not disapointed. my girlfriend had a chicken dish that also really enjoyed. if you're dining on the north end i highly recommend Lucia, and Christine(a)
Strongly recommend to everybody – This is our first trip to Boston and everywhere we go, we try our best to find the best Italian. This time,we had no resutaurant info in advance,so me and my wife just walked around to seek the real taste of Italy using our six sense. Lucia located almost at the edge of North End and my wife insisted to get in there without any special reason. Since we were not so hungry, ordered just two pasta which is Bolonese and Bongore without expectation..but the dishes were both incredible tasty and the pasta was good enough boiled (NOT typical US too soft pasta) and the service was good too. At the time of check,we booked the table for tomorrow dinner as well. We can not wait to taste the different dish soon !!
Loved it – I have been disappointed with many restaurants during restaurant week, but Lucia was definitely not one of them! We arrived and were prompty greeted in a very friendly manner. The entrance is a little awkward (it's as if you are walking into the service area), but the decor makes up for it. This place is so quaint and perfect for a romantic date! Our server was so attentive and actually cared that we enjoyed our experience. The food was great - delicious artichoke as my appetizer, awesome risotto stuffed chicken and perfectly grilled swordfish as our entrees. We left happy and would definitely go back!
Worst Service EVER – Heard a few good things about this place, so i tried it out last night for restaurant week. Now I've heard that you don't get the best service during restuarant week, but I've been to most places in Boston for restaurant week and have had awesome service, so that isn't true. Where to begin:
Our waiter i thought was in slow motion. We were supposed to have 4 courses: appetizer, pasta, entree and dessert. Well it takes him 20 minutes to bring the bread, finally he brings the appetizer after 30 mins. Then, we wait another 30 minutes when he tells us he forgot the pasta course. SWEET. So he brings the entree...followed by the pasta course. Now my girlfriend worked as a waitress her whole life, so she was saying it was probably the kitchen was backed up. Well, the part that irked me the most was not once did the waiter say "Sorry for the delay...I apologize I messed up.." NOTHING. I mean how do you not comment on the fact it took you over an hour to bring us our food on a not so crowded Tuesday.
Funniest part was the couple next to us was waiting just as long and then the waiter came over and told them what they had ordered was sold out. This was about 30 mins AFTER they ordered. Like what kind of operation is this.
Anyway, I grudgingly gave him a 15% tip, and he was lucky he got that. This was an AWFUL dining experience!
