Cibo has a new name and it is a Definite Must- Panza now – Awesome food and service and to top it off, it was more affordable than most of the other restaurants in the North End. The name has changed, but thankfully the food is even better than ever. Glad we gave it a shot! The only downfall is that they don't have valet parking and if you are driving in from out of town, the closest garage is on the corner of Prince and Commercial Street.
Little Jewel in Boston's North End – My bf and I happened on this place one night after we were treated terribly at Giacomo's (the big tourist trap across the street) and decided to not give them our money. Not knowing what to expect we entered Cibo, sat by the windows and admired the rustic simplicity of the decor. We live in the area and we've been to lots of places in the North End with widely varying degrees of satisfaction. This place has quickly become our favorite casual neighborhood eatery. We started with the Italian Greens on polenta appetizer. It's fantastic. Subsequently we've had the ribs appetizer as well as the sausage and broccoli rabe app. The ribs fall off the bone and are complemented by a sweet, savory sauce. The sausage-rabe dish is a perfect blend of meaty, spicy goodness. On subsequent visits we've tried the skirt steak (w/risotto and grilled veggies) entree, as well as the linguine carbonara, and a marinated lamb special. All were very well-prepared and delicious. One of the things I like most about this place is that the kitchen is doing interesting things with classic dishes and putting a unique, fresh spin on some old standbys. The wine list is serviceable and there's not a huge markup on price. (We ordered a tasty merlot for $20 that we later saw at a liquor store for $14.) We've also been fortunate enough to have the same server every time (Christian) and he does a fabulous job.
Good enough food, bad service experience – I was very excited to visit Cibo's because it came so highly recommended, however, I did not have the type of experience described on this website. I and two other people ordered a specially made pasta with sauce. When we received our meal, all three of us, did not get what we ordered. Instead, we got a plain Alfredo sauce over pasta. When I brought this to the waiter's attention, I was asked to come back into the kitchen and meet the chef. He tasted the sauce and then scolded me for thinking it was something else. Clearly he didn't make the sauce he agreed to, but the worst part was being humiliated by the chef.
Look, for $15-20 a plate, if you don't have it, just let the customer know, and we would have happily ordered something else.
Nice place for an early summer dinner... – My boyfriend and I stopped around 6pm on a Tuesday earlier this summer, on our way home. There were two tables left when we arrived and it stayed busy the entire time we were there. Our waitress was very nice and never hurried us, although she was the only waitress on that night, with the exception of a bus boy who promptly filled our waters and cleared plates. My boyfriend and I split the ribs as an appetizer, they were fall off the bone and the sauce was sweet and light. I ordered the black cod entree, it came with asparagus, tomatoes, and polenta; I found the dish fresh and the size was more than enough. My boyfriend had the eggplant parm with penne, he thought it was great and could tell it was made to order. Overall, we thought the atmosphere and food were great for a warm summer evening. If you can get a seat by the windows its good people watching.
Tip big or else! – Thursday night, 6:00, five tables (2-tops) seated. I've read reviews on Citysearch about prompt seating. Can now see why. Giacomo's across the street had a line out on the sidewalk. Cibo wasn't even getting the overflow. Calamari was good, a touch on the 'old grease' side but tasty. The "sauteed greens" Are you kidding? There was a thin layer of unrecognizeable greens laying across the top of what appeared to be bread angles, almost french-toast-like. Slathered in a cheese sauce and drizzled with what I think was supposed to be balsamic reduction but what resembled chocolate sauce. My wife had a bite and couldn't eat it. Waiter asked if my wife was done with the appetizer. Clearly stated she did not like it. Entrees: Veal marsala: greasy. Fettucine with shellfish: unremarkable. Bill came. Charged for "greens". OK. Tipped 10%. Waiter comes after us in the street saying I signed the wrong copy. Clearly not his main intent. Says: "It's not my fault you didn't like them." With 25 yrs in restaurant business, tried to get him to understand why the greens should have been taken off the bill. Claimed I don't know how to tip. Another 'order taker' of a waiter who thinks a tip is an entitlement. Asked if the owner was in. "No...and he wouldn't have taken it off the bill either." I guess everyone who eats in the "new" North End is stupid and doesn't know what a dining experience should be. A few traded vulagrities later and off we went as he shook his rear end as if to tell me what to do with it. Nice touch. Gave those tourists on the street a real taste of Little italy. Stupidly, I still signed the merchant copy with the 10% tip when I should have stiffed him. I was a little in shock, I guess, as I'm not to used to waiters verbally attacking me in the streets. The North End is gone. It's Italian Disneyworld there now. Ask any of the few real Italians who still might frequent the espresso shops during the day. What a disgrace. As much as this dining experience was. Beware.
Things have changed at CIBO!! – I am from Denver and on buisness in Boston. I went to the north end to eat at Giacomo's that I had heard about from people from Boston. Giacomo's had a line out the door so I went across the street to Cibo. I have never heard about this place until after I got back to denver and looked for reviews. That is why I am writeing this review. I thouhgt the food was unreal! They had a grilled pizza fresh mozz and plum tomato to die for. I also had this rib app. That was also unreal!! My waiter was this big tall deep voice guy, I think his name was joe. He was fast,nice and I didn't feel rushed at all! I had 3 guys with me and everything was awesome. Not one of us left anything on the plate! Being from Denver I don't food like that often!
I will go back the next time to try Giacomo's that I have heard so much about but it there is a line I will be more then happy with Cibo!!
Good food, typical North End – The food was very good, although not the absolute best. The calamari I recommend, though the portion isn't tremendous. The wait staff is a bit brusque, but that's fine, the place is small. All in all, a decent, typical North End stop.
Great Italian! – We were visiting Boston & loved the food at Cibo! Great food & inexpensive prices! I am looking forward to visitng Cibo again next time I am in Boston.
We had a great meal with no complaints – We were walking around the area and just stopped in to eat because it looked nice. The staff was great and we have no complaints with the service or the food. We cook quite a bit and are pretty savvy when it comes to quality ingredients. The two specials we ordered were wonderful, fresh, and filling. I'm glad I didn't read any of these reviews beforehand because we might not have gone there otherwise.
ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE – After many great experiences at restaurants in the North End, we decided to take our friends who were in town from California to try Cibo, and suffice it to say neither we, nor any of our friends, will ever be going there again. The food was medicore (the seafood was cold and the marinara sauce was salty and greasy), and the service was rushed and rude. After leaving a 12% tip on our meal, the manager came over to our table and said (and I quote): "Were you dissatisfied with your food? Because you left a really shi&%y tip. Eight or nine percent is rediculous!" Apparently he was never taught manners, or how to do math! After staring at him in disbelief for a few moments, our waitress returned to the table, slammed down our leftovers, and said "I don't work for free you know." The manager then proceeded to LOUDLY ask us to never come back. Needless to say, this was quite a scene in the small restaurant. We were entirely appalled that the manager would use profanity with us (not to mention the fact that there were small children within earshot), and ask us to never return. Please do not give such a horrendous establishment your time or money.
