Avoid Mon & Tues evenings – Food is basic and nothing exciting (but people believe good food at a good price is needed in the area)

My shrimp and lobster Risotto with truffle oil had no favor what so ever. My girlfriend had the grilled stuffed pork which came to the table over-cooked. The waiter was apologetic and took it way, and returned 20 minutes later with another cut, which was RAW. The second plate was sent back again and was served a third time. Not the type of service you expect when you pay the prices you do, inexpensive or not, I would not expect this level of service from McDonalds, no less Laurel.

To top it off when I asked for a manager, I was told one was not on duty. The waiter charged me for both entrees, and took a meer 10% of the check.

When I called the following day to talk to a manager, he was apologetic and informed me that there is no on duty manager on Monday & Tuesday evenings. In addition he promised to send me a gift certificate to compensate me for my problems. Several weeks later, I have not heard from the restaurant.

Bad cooking (that could make you sick) and poor management = bad rating.

Great for a Dinner Party and Excellent Desserts – My family celebrated my birthday here for dinner last Saturday night. There were 8 of us total and overall it was a pleasant experience for everyone. I had made a reservation for 6:30pm and we were seated immediately which I thought was very efficient. We shared the roasted pepper hummus and calamari for appetizers. The hummus was flavorful yet mild, I just wish they gave more slices of toast--they only gave about 8 small slices which just wasn't enough. However we used the complimentary bread to eat the rest. The calamari was good; nothing really extraordinary. My aunt had the Goat Cheese & Proscuitto Salad and said it was tasty but just wished there was more goat cheese overall since it was a small sprinkling.

For our entrees - everyone ordered something different and I don't think anyone had a complaint! My meal was the strip steak and it was a hearty cut cooked perfectly to my requested medium rare. Other big hits were the Rotisserie Duck and the Chilean Sea Bass.

The desserts - the highlight of my meal! I specifically chose this restaurant because it was reasonably priced AND had their own pastry chef (who I believe is the co-owner with her husband). Almost my whole party ordered from the dessert menu which changes seasonally. Mmmm, the Free Form Mud Pie brownie was so incredibly rich and delicious! The brownie is thick and cakey combined with spoonfuls of ice cream -- perfect with my cup of coffee. My other favorite was the pumpkin gingerbread which comes out warm with a fruit sauce drizzled on the bottom...the warm bread is so flavorful and rich - it tastes like it is freshly baked. We also had the Peanut Butter Mousse and 8 Layer Chocolate Trifle - both very tasty and unique!

Overall the ambiance was pleasant and the wait staff courteous. Nothing to complain about in terms of service and you really can't beat the prices. I will definitely come back again!

Good service, nice atmosphere, great prices – I recently went to Laurel for a dinner with a group of friends. Our server was friendly and attentive and the food was decent. I got the pork tenderloin special, which was good. All of my friends enjoyed their meals as well. I really liked the atmosphere of the restaurant, not too stuffy, comfortable and inviting and, you can't beat the prices! I would go back anytime.

Food, Service & Atmosphere: A great overall experience – Some friends and I had dinner at Laurel last weekend, and we couldn't have been more pleased. It was pretty busy (this was 7 pm on a Saturday night,) so there was a wait, but it gave us the opportunity to have a couple of drinks at the welcoming bar with the very friendly, very skilled bartender. When our table was ready, we received attentive service and the waitstaff was accomodating to our one friend who was vegetarian, and one friend that had a few special requests when ordering. We started off with the lobster, spinach and artichoke dip and were thrilled by this innovative twist on spinach/artichoke dip. Really good stuff.

For my entree, I ordered the rotisserie chicken with a garlic-jalapeno rub. The generous portion was moist, and spicy while staying very flavorful. I also managed to sneak some lobster risotto from my friend sitting beside me...this was great, too. While we were eating, our waitress was attentive without making us feel rushed, despite the fact that it was clearly a busy night. The frenetic pace in the busy dining room didn't betray the relaxed atmosphere, and this really contributed to the great experience we all had. And we made sure to visit the bartender after our meal for a nightcap as well. I highly recommend Laurel, we will surely be back in the near future.

Quality of freshness is unsurpassed~! – WOW! This was a wonderful experience for us in the South End from the actual building, which is attractive and inviting, to the allure of the ambiance inside! As you walk in, you see their bar presented to your left, and the beautiful restaurant unfolds to your right. An efficient hostess seated us quickly.

Our first impression of Laurel was their decor, which was welcoming and trendy at the same time. We ordered several appetizers, which produced very high degrees of satisfaction. The Calamari were very good. Also tried the PEI mussels, which were out of this world.

I didn't try the house salad, but my friend did. She was delighted with her choice.

We then went onto our entrees

Braised SHort ribs were incredible, they came with a mushroom ravioli and sauce that melted in my mouth. My friend ordered their signature Turkey Meatballs, which again were a top choice. The guys ordered the Sirloin with a raisin whiskey sauce atop of it, nice and juicy cut of meat, and our other friend ordered the Lamb shank over polenta, which Ifelt lacked a bit in flavour but he enjoyed it so that was good.

The sauce sweetly unique.

At this point, I could have left with my appetite quite satisfied, but on with blessed excess. Finally, on with the dessert.

We decided to share two desserts: a chocolate brownie fondue?so moist and sweet. And we also got their strawberry rhubarb tart, again out of this world! Followed with two gigantic coffee drinks, which we sucked down and were extremely satisfied with the amount of food we received.

We've all tried many of Boston's popular and excellent restaurant choices and agreed that Laurel is easily comparable with Boston's best, and one of the few contemporarily designed choices. All of the choices delivered solid performances, creative without going over the top. The facility, the staff, and the food all get top scores.

We will return for sure!!! Looking forward to it!

Welcoming atmosphere with great food.... – Our family has wanted to visit Laurel Grill for some time and we finally made it in for a long overdue visit. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. We had a short wait for a table, which enabled us to have some drinks at the bar provided by Laurel's charming bar tender.

Our table was great overlooking the restaurant and open kitchen. My husband ordered the lamb shank special which was wonderful. I ordered the braised short rib which was delicious! We all agreed the best part was the wonderful desserts! Even the two pre-teen kids with us had a great time.

We can't wait to visit again. Thanks for doing what you do!!

Great food, great atmosphere, a good family pick! – We had an enjoyable night out with our family and stopped at Laurels for dinner. I liked the family atmosphere and felt like we had plenty of room. The tables are nicely spread out. The waitstaff was prompt (and patient despite spilled milk) and the service was excellent. We didn't have to wait long even with a big group. The waitress was very accomodating to the kids. Our meals were prepared well and delicious. I think this restaurant is a great place to go. Excellent food, reasonable prices, comfortable atmosphere, good drink menu!!

terrible service - extremely unaccomodating of food allergies – I attended a birthday dinner party at Laurel over Labor Day weekend. SEeing as this restaurant received accolades for vegetarian fare, I am even more disappointed in my meal. While ordering, I informed the waitress of my food allergies and vegetarianism. She looked at me like I was an alien. I said I couldn't eat wheat and dairy - a reasonable request and would accept any type of vegetable, salad, whatever. I received an appetizer size salad and a side of steamed green beans - without apology. The music was weird, the service was bad. The servers were visibly socializing and folding napkins at a table while my water glass sat empty and my entree was embarrassing. Apparently the salad person "didn't show up" but I'm not sure that's an excuse for what the kitchen produced. I'm writing this as a 6 year Boston resident - I've been to many meals at many restaurants and I present this same request. this is by far the worst service I have EVER received.

No longer a Vegetarian restaurant. – I have been to Laurel before and loved it. Last night I went and the menu is no longer the same. Only vegetarian entree is a pasta dish and it's pretty easy to get a pasta dish at most restaurants in Boston. I am very disappointed in the new menu and City Search needs to remove the Vegetarian tag for Laurel.

Exceptionally affordable comfort fare on the edge of the Back Bay. – The Scene
Located where the South End meets the Back Bay, Laurel serves as a second home for countless area residents. Generously portioned comfort dishes carry puny price tags, as do most selections from the straightforward wine list. Courteous waiters patrol a cavernous dining room. The decor--imposing curtains, hardwood flooring and an unobtrusive color scheme--resembles a pleasant banquet hall.

The Food

Laurel's epic menu is truly a sight to behold: Expect about 20 entree options, divvied up among vegetarian, fowl, seafood and meat entries, including a rotisserie honey-glazed chicken and smoky veal meat loaf. Wise diners stick to items that feature local ingredients: try roasted butternut-squash soup, or poached cod with an appealing balsamic drizzle. Starters like baked brie with toasted almonds, or crisp fried calamari with spicy chipotle mayonnaise, are perfect for sharing at the bar. Homemade desserts (chocolate pudding flan) tend to be on the heavy side.
