Engagement ring horror story
The short version:
1. Lux Bond & Green sold us the wrong engagement band/setting for our family heirloom diamond. The band/setting cost $1,600.
2. The diamond fell out within a year and was lost.
3. Lux Bond & Green would not allow us to return the defective band. I talked to John Green personally and he told me to "sell the ring for scrap metal, but it's not worth much."
The long version:
Lux Bond & Green sold me a $1,600 platinum band/setting to hold a family heirloom diamond, which I presented to my fiance as an engagement ring. The diamond fell out of the setting within a year (after we were married).
My wife and I took the diamond and band/setting to a respected jeweler in Wellington, New Zealand's capitol city (where we were living at the time). He inspected the diamond and platinum setting and told us that whoever had sold us the ring had made a mistake -- the setting did not match the diamond. He showed us the correct type of setting for our "miner's cut" diamond. My wife and I discussed whether we should buy the correct setting then and there (it was expensive), but eventually decided to return the band to Lux Bond & Green when we were in the USA again, where we assumed we could exchange our mismatched setting for the correct type. The New Zealand jeweler did his best to reset the diamond into our setting, but warned us once again that the setting did not match the diamond. My wife prudently chose not to wear the ring from that point on.
A year later, we moved to New York and my wife unfortunately chose to wear the ring to a dinner party one evening. When she returned home, the diamond was gone. She was in tears, sobbing -- we looked for the diamond everywhere -- on the snowy streets, in the subway -- finally we filed a lost item report with the police. My wife was terrified to tell my mother the diamond had been lost, and was furious with Lux Bond & Green for selling us the setting that caused the loss. She wanted to call Lux Bond & Green to demand compensation for the diamond. Luckily the diamond was insured.
I took the band/setting to Lux Bond & Green, explained how the diamond was lost, and asked to return the band/setting for a refund. Incredibly, the staff suggested the diamond must have been cracked, even though their own jeweler had inspected and appraised the diamond originally, even though the jeweler in New Zealand had inspected both the diamond and band and had faulted the band (I showed them the receipt with his notes). The staff at Lux Bond & Green also didn't seem to know what the correct setting for our "miner's cut" diamond should have been. I pressed my case and was finally told that John Green (one of the owners) would call me.
Several days later John Green called and said they had decided to refuse to refund us for the band/setting. I pointed out that we were simply requesting a refund for the faulty item that had caused the loss of an irreplaceable family heirloom diamond. He then blamed the New Zealand jeweler (even though the diamond had fallen out BEFORE we went to him), and told me I should "sell the band for scrap, although it's not worth much."
My family has been going to Lux Bond & Green for three generations. My grandmother, mother, sister-in-law, wife -- none of them will ever shop there again. And we will all warn our friends / relatives from ever going there.
Great service – My fiancee and I were walking by Lux Bond & Green when she suggested we stop in. She said it was like Tiffany in Hartford, CT so we expected it to be snooty and very expensive. We were quite surprised to be greeted by Jack, the manager, and to be made at home. In addition to great service we found out that they also have fair prices. Now that we have made a few purchases, and are happy with all of them, I can happily suggest that anyone in the market for jewelry or giftware stop by Lux and give them a chance at your business.
High-end jewels with down-to-earth service. – The Scene
If you're shopping for watches, baubles or crystal, this store is a great alternative to Tiffany's and Shreve's. The chain boasts very friendly and unintimidating service, as well as a spectacular selection of jewelry designers.
There's a wide range of goods to satisfy just about every budget. Sure, you can find a $60,000 engagement ring here, but you can also find one for a few thousand. If you're in the market for a new bauble, the store carries an extensive collection from big name designers including trendy David Yurman pieces, cultured South Sea Mikimoto pearls, and pretty Roberto Coin accessories. There's also a small gift/home department that sells a nice selection of upscale designers, such as artistic Stueben glass, fashionable Bernardaud china, and elegant Christofle Silver.
