A little too much attitude to endure – While getting drunk in Rontoms' 1970s-inspired den is the closest you'll ever get to the room in which you were conceived, I urge you to take your drinks out to the architecturally-impressive back patio. There, continue to sip your drink until you're filled with enough liquid courage to talk to one of the beautiful people. Bottoms up.
Nice selection of local liquors – Nice selection of local liquors + brews, and great fondue. Spacious and cozy interior (sofas, a fireplace). Huge back patio.
Think 1974 living room 10x's bigger! Vintage tables, chairs and couches create intimate seating spaces within this large room with a fireplace in the sunken center. Local, bold, interesting art adorns the walls. The burger was extremely tasty and the cream cheese and herb stuffed mushrooms topped with bread crumbs and manchego cheese were devoured leaving me wanting to not only lick my fork clean but also the plate they were served on. Our waitress was attentive and pleasant. Live bands play Sunday evenings and, in nicer weather, a well sized patio with ping pong table and outdoor bar makes for a very chill way to wrap up a day.
Rontoms is one of my most favorite bars on the east side. While some of the staff need a serious attitude check, the surroundings are awesome and fun, the beer list is really great for the size, and there are always people here.
The staff seems too cool to be bothered, but I'm used to that in Portland by now. Still a great room in the winter, and a great patio in the summer!
Great Place Except Weekends and Some Staff – I've gone to RonToms about a dozen times. For drinks I like it far better than The Doug Fir, their counterpart competition up the street. The bartenders are usually good about a realistic pour when ordering liquor, and I love the atmosphere. It's also a great place for larger groups.
That said, I would highly recommend NEVER going there on a weekend night; they simply do not have the behind-the-bar space or staffing for weekends. Period. Go and wait if you don't believe me.
Also, SOME, not all, of the staff are pretty pretentious, with that sassy hipster garbage that no one else finds quite so charming. You are a tatted up cocktail waitress, okay, not a neurosurgeon. Get over yourself. Seriously.
Why did I ever go back to this place?! – Why did I ever go back to this place!? After several poor experiences here, I should have listened to my gut and never returned. After last night, I truly never will. My girlfriend and I decided to stop by for a snack and a drink at 11:30 on a FRIDAY night, and were informed that last call would be called at midnight since it was 'slow'. We should have left, but were assured we could still have the full menu and time to have a cocktail. There were about 25 ppl there at that point, and we watched as they turned away about 50 more away. (Some of these people sat for about 10 min. at tables before they were informed.) We got our drinks after 20 minutes (!) and food shortly after. The food was great and our server was pleasant, but the spanish coffee was cold, the sugar was nowhere near caramelized, and it did not come with a straw. Meanwhile, the staff rushed around us to close the blinds and lock the door, assuring us we could take our time. Immediately following that the bartender shouted from behind the bar that he had to have us out within 5 minutes. Why? We were not informed. The apparent owner, who was seated at the bar, walked back and put some speed-metal on the stereo. He stood in the kitchen laughing and shaking his fists at the remaining patrons. Then, thankfully, he turned up the metal all the way! We walked out without finishing our drinks, and wondering why we gave this place another chance, and 36 of our dollars (for two sannies and two drinks). I understand now why my previous experiences were so dissappointing: the horrible and disrespectful service, and non-userfriendliness come down straight from the owner! I made exceptions for this business as it opened and got on its feet, but after 3 years I know it will never be an enjoyable place to hang out--it's demise endemic with it's inception and management. My recommendation is to not waste your money being treated like a douche here. Enjoy your night, elsewhere!
one star is too much – On a Saturday night, the biggest douchefest I've ever witnessed, and I've lived in LA and NY. This place should be in Tijuana.
cool place-rude female bartenders – This place was cool. Loved the ping pong in the back. However, it's pretty rude to not give out a free drink to someone on their 21st birthday...IT ONLY HAPPENS ONCE PEOPLE. And if that is not possible, smiling might be a nice thing to learn. You might actually get a tip next time.
