Didn't work for me, but might for you – So, I tried one of the free classes and this was my experience. I called a few days prior and they would not give me any pricing information over the phone. So, my gf and I went to our free class and got wrapped into the communial boxing stuff on our hands. (It SMELLS REALLY bad like mold or worse.. just fyi) The class 60 minute class consisted of a 30 min warm up of jogging, lunges, sidesweeps, crawling with your butt in the air, and massive amount of pushups. This was followed by 15 minutes of actual punching and kicking the bag, and the last 15 minutes was ab work. The class was great and instructor very helpful as far as showing my gf and I how to do things. We sweated like never before!

So, the reasons I wouldn't join are:

The pricing consists of a $99 initiation fee no matter which option you choose. It is cheaper the more YEARS you agree too but for a one year agreement it is still $74 a month. I wanted a per class thing, which I said when I called, but they don't offer that.

Another reason is that the floor is CONCRETE with commerical carpeting. That is just insanely STUPID for a boxing place. The capeting gave me rug burn on my knees last night from (girl style) pushups and on my forearms from planks that hurt like a mother.

The second is that, contrary to what they said on the phone, they (including the manager) does not have the power to negotiate pricing for the individual.

We were just looking to supplement and add interest to our 1/2 marathon training.

Bottom line is that if this is the only workout you want a few days a week, then it is worth it. The workout was great (as was the guys that worked there), but knees be ware on the floor that is standard for any other boxing place.

Great Staff--Great workouts – I really like it here. I joined in January. The GM is very professional and the coaches are very good. I especially like Jerold's class...One of the front desk girls was kinda weird, but they got rid of her--The workouts are incredible and the rates are pretty good. I have recomended to frieds.

Not bad. – I've tried a couple of different classes here. The instruction was decent, but the facility could use some work. A concrete floor with industrial carpet on it is not ideal for boxing, kickboxing, or other martial arts work. Really tough on the joints to run and do floorwork on concrete. I wish the facility was a bit larger. The bags are really close together and it limits your ability to move around on combinations. If the classes were full, it would be pretty tight for space in here. Both instructors I took class from provided feedback to students and corrected form.

If only the gym was open more in the morning. – I've been a member at LA Boxing for about 6 months and while I like the classes and the facility I'm only able to use the gym twice a week. When I first started they had classes every morning so I could stop and work out on my way to my job. A couple of weeks after their grand opening they cut their morning classes down from 5 to 3. A month or so later they cut the Friday class so now they only have two early morning classes a week. Not only do they not have morning classes, but on the days they don't have classes they aren't even open for open gym. You cant' even come and workout without an instructor. Imagine joining a gym that is closed Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings. Especially when you signed up specifically to do morning workouts before your job. They cut their gym availability by over half but do you think they cut my monthly membership bill? Like I said, its a good gym and I enjoy the instruction when I can get it. Hopefully they will address this issue soon by either bringing back the morning classes or at the very least opening up the gym up for open gym workouts on weekday mornings. I can't help but feel a little defrauded in that I feel the gym put on a little bit of show when they first opened and once I signed the contract they gradually began scaling back classes and gym hours.

Awesome Staff and Workout – I love Tyrone and the staff at the Portland LA Boxing! The work out is intense - but what do you expect you should do to burn 1000 calories in one hour? hmmm? Slow stretches like in yoga? A brisk walk perhaps? Come on! This is a spectacular workout - even if you aren't in shape yet - you just have to take it at your own pace. If you feel it would hurt you to do something - run in place or some other cardio move. None of the instructors make you feel bad if you can't do something. They help you so you CAN do it and they motivate you in a positive way. Men and women of all shapes and sizes take these classes and if you can't handle the workout, go back to yoga! The rest of us want our body shaped and ready for the summer!

Sorry amiee21 worth the price of membership – I guess amiee21 had a bad day, because first of all the intructors don't push you to do anything you don't want to. The General manager, I for got his name, tells you to take the class at your own pace. He shows you how to wrap your hands and introduces you to the instructors. You are learning how to box, and kickbox, amiee21 must have been doing her own thing and not listening to the instructors. Because you are learning and getting your cardio in at the same time. Not one time in class did I think I was going to hurt myself, or the intructors where trying to hurt me.

To compare 24 hour fitness to LA Boxing is like comparing apples to oranges, you just can't do it. The difference between the two, LA boxing, Yeah it is small but you get the personalble feel of the gym, like you belong. Not just a number and limited classes at 24 hour fitness, La Fitness, and bally's. The class is only an hour long and your burning a 1000 calories and toning muscle when your hitting the heavy bags. Something that 24 hour fitness, La fitness, and bally's don't have. Sorry amiee21 you should try it again and have an open mind. Because how often do you take a shower at your gym or use the lockers. Maybe 10% of the time. LA Boxing keep up the good work. Worth the price of membership.

Jab, Duck, & Kick AWAY FROM HERE! – First impressions: I met Tyrone Sellers & noticed right off a small facility, no mirrors & carpeted. There is a M&W restroom & 1 unisex shower. Their gloves/wraps are overpriced; go to the local sports store & buy for 1/3 the price! After taking their boxing & kickboxing classes I wouldn?t recommend membership mainly due to participant safety. I wrongly expected these classes to trump the typical 24hr. gym classes.

1) Carpeted floors. Certain moves require you to turn/pivot your feet for execution & on carpet modifications are a must. But, when you are being drilled by the instructors to speed it up, you are increasing the chance of serious injury to your feet/knees/joints! 2) Little to no breakdown of jab/kick/technique queuing. I can?t believe that the dynamics of safely executing these basic moves were minimally addressed! And being told to increase your speed on carpet; not safe! 3) Unbalanced moves. Always queued moves from dominant side; I was never told to switch sides. 4) Quick moves from your feet to floor. Both classes instructed participants to work at a high intensity on their feet & then told to drop to the floor for another intense drill & this continued multiple times in a row. This is not safe! 5) No mats or towels. Enjoy stretching/abs on the carpet & then picking gross stuff off your arms/legs/back. 6) Instructors didn?t show low-intensity/modified moves for class participants & shouldn?t be forcing participants to do high intensity moves. Participants may have pre-existing conditions that limit their range of motion or don?t like to be touched on their arms/legs. Instructors need to be conscientious of participants? personal exercise limitations, shouldn?t expect all to work out at the same level of intensity/duration, & they need to be respectful of participant safety & personal space.

After this, I would not sign up for a membership! I expected instruction of proper technique & a safe class format & environment. I hope things will change.

The Best Workout – The first time I tried LA Boxing, I took a class at there first gym in Costa Mesa. I thought I was in shape because I played professional football, but after taking the class it was great, it kicked my butt. One of the best workouts that I have ever had. I can't wait until they open the LA Boxing in Portland.
