Crab Po' Boy...Mmm – I have been to Mua again and again. The service used to be better, but the past few times - it's been lacking. Last night, we had to ASK for bread at our table after ordering 3 entrees, and ASK for salt and pepper, and again ASK for the check. We might have ordered more drinks if someone had come over to see if we wanted any...but they didn't.

Despite the mediocre service, there are so many good things about Mua:

The atmosphere is like a fancy art warehouse, complete with a motorcycle parked inside.

The food is delicious. Last night we had mussles in some amazing broth, a crab po-boy sandwich, and fried chicken with wonderful, not-too-sweet corn bread.

The mixed drinks use fresh ingredients like cucumbers. Try the virgin white peach mojito (but get it de-virginized).

Small plates are mostly under ten dollars. Larger plates are $11-$17.

Delicious. Would be 5 stars with better service!

I Had No Idea – Overall it was a cool place to be on a Friday night. We walked in and went straight upstairs to the lounge area. I liked the featured art work, seating and overall atmosphere. Drinks were really good. I wish I would have made it for Happy Hour though. The DJ did a great job of mixing up the music. I will definitely go back...soon!

Unexpected Space – I have been trying to explore all things Oakland. I can say I was not ready for this late night food hot spot or to be getting up after eating and dancing until 1am. My 2 companions and I decided to walk to find food after coming out of a Grand Opening for another lounge on Grand. Ozumo's was closing, Picans was locked up, so we were strolling back to our car when a girlfriend passing by suggested Mua. We came up on it and there were bouncers who were very polite and even got the door for us, wishing us a good evening. That set the right mood. We walked down a narrow corridor that contained a front lounge/bar and tons of people chatting and enjoying themselves. You must walk through this area to get to the restaurant, where you come across a sign that says"please wait to be seated. I did not expect the narrow corridor to open up into a gorgeous loft space! There were communal tables, a DJ spinning world music, as well as the classic R&B, and a staircase that led to another bar and lounging area. It was decorated with modern/abstract art pieces and I was amazed. How did I miss this place & why was I just finding out about it? I wasnt starvng so I ordered a caesar salad, while one friend had fried chicken w/ cornbread & greens & the other chicken satay w/ cilantro dipping sauce. The dressing on my salad was tasty and not drenching the lettuce. The fried chicken was moist and well seasoned, the corn bread was good(to crumbly for my taste) but delish and the greens had just enough vinegar for balance. The cilantro dip was not overpowering, just the right choice for the chicken satay. We shared the bread pudding w/ rasberry sauce. It was on the lighter end of bread pudding, very creamy texture and lovable. Only one of us had beer and the bill came to $55. That's high end late night eating in Oakland(cuz rolling through Jack in the Box was the next plan). It was worth the cash since it ended with two of us salsa dancing and enjoying the rest of our evening. We had so much fun, walking out into rain did not break our spirit.
