Charles Cocktails – I just tried "The Jane" Cocktail by Pete Harrison at Restaurant Charles ( I found it on the Behind the Burner website! ) So good!
Great dinner – I'm not really sure what the other reviews are all about but I had a good time at Charles. The atmosphere was great, lively....the food was good and the service was fantastic. The bar area is a little small so if you have to wait for your table i could see that being a problem but overall a place i would definitely recommend.
Citysearch Editorial Review – With so many eateries clamoring for hot spot status, it's difficult for a restaurant to distinguish itself, let alone maintain its cachet over time, as Charles has. Having an unlisted phone number helped the West Village clubhouse bill itself as exclusive from the start, but its real strength lies in the kitchen, helmed by executive chef Jason Zukas. Inventive appetizers (most notably a fluffy grilled cheese sandwich drizzled in truffle oil) set the stage for well-prepared entrees like diver scallops over cauliflower puree and hearty braised short ribs. With only 65 seats, the space is cozy, and stylish design accents like Edison bulbs and marbleized wallpapering make the dining experience all the more enjoyable.
Don't Bother – The group I was with spent entirely too much money to be asked to leave after only one and a half hours of dining. Food was decent, service was inexcusably poor (unless you like being treated like a red-headed step child). Would NEVER spend that kind of money again just to be asked to leave to make room for better patrons. Don't ever bother - WAY too many other options out there to waste your time or money here.
Desperately trying to be Waverly... – Walked into a hidden door with newspapers covering the windows to find a staff that looked shocked and disappointed that anyone found their restaurant. Bartendar tells us at 7pm that he ran out of gin and Bailey's and after an hour and a half that cost 7 of us well into 4figs, they asked us to finish our $30 glasses of scotch at the bar (which was packed). The Maitre'd thought he was Graydon Carter, but without the money and social standing, and the rest of the staff was overbearing. I will say we all enjoyed our food but it is amateur hour when u walk in and start fraternizing with the help. Stick with Waverly, cooler decor and better food.
