I had passed by Evolve many times in my travels; looked interesting from the outside, so I finally decided to stop in. Big mistake. Unfortunately, this place can be a huge rip-off, starting with the outrageous $20 cover, and continuing with the very overpriced drinks. The male dancers offer lap dances at $20 'per song', which seemed reasonable, initially. Of course they play these mixes that you really can't discern a 'song' from, and in the space of barely 3 minutes, this dancer said that it was 3 'songs', and demanded $60 (I don't know any true songs that last just a minute. I felt like I'd really been 'gamed', and told him so). I paid him what he asked for anyway (I really wasn't in the mood for a scene, especially in a place like this), left, and chalked it up to experience. If you must go there, avoid the lap dances, or at the very least ask the dancer to let you know when the first 'song' is over so you're not caught by surprise; the whole 'per song' thing is a scam that opens the door for you to be charged way more than you expect as the music mixes are churning away. Between their hefty $20 cover, overpriced drinks, and the questionable 'per song' lap-dance formula, my best advice is that with so many other really great, fun places to go in NYC, don't waste your time or money in a place like Evolve.
THE DOOR SWINGS BOTH WAYS! – I don't know what the woman in the last review is talking about but this place ROCKS! First off, I've been coming to this spot with my galpals before it changed to Evolve. And since becoming new last year, I have only heard, seen, and felt the most positive changes - one being the encouragement of more women coming in and hanging out. I go almost every Friday and Saturday night and have the best time. Living on the east side, this place makes it an excuse for me NOT to trek all the way to the west side where most of the popular spots are. In fact, the weekends seem to be the nights that I see a healthy amount of straight and gay mixes, and about a 1/3 are WOMEN! Now I can't tell if those women are gay, but whichever way they swing, they seem to have a good time from what I can tell (and so do my girls)! I also heard there is a gay night on Tuesdays for women they are trying to promote so this place CAN'T be hating on girls.
The music is always jammin' (modern, eclectic, popular and loungey); the bartenders are the friendliest and pretty cute; the drinks are nicely priced for what you get (happy hour prices are incredibly nice to my wallet); the decor is shiek yet casual; the dancers (on Saturdays) are super hot; the manager came up to us and told us how he was ''delighted" to see me and my 2 girlfriends hanging out and that he'd love to see more women come in (I'm not sure if he is gay and was hitting on my girlfriends but he certainly was cute); and it's finally nice to walk into what I understand is a predominantly gay bar and see real ladies rockin it out with the boys. All bars, gay or straight, should be this inclusive. The door certainly swings both ways. And, if any woman, gay or not, does walk into a casual, neighborhood-type GAY bar, expect to see some men using the ladies' room.
The only thing I wish this place had were more acts or events during the week. But other than that, this place is where I call my haunt!
In RESPONSE – Key words..."ENCOURAGEMENT OF MORE WOMEN"!!!
what does that tell you?
Yes it is possible me and my girlfriend came on there BAD nite, however, the guys who were RUDE are usuals. Which puts me into perspective of why you would need "ENCOURAGEMENT OF MORE WOMEN"!!!
This place of course has no problem letting women in..the challenge is...your comfort and the energygiven off by those who are enjoying the environment with you . PERIOD!!!
Great Bar - Good Happy Hour Special – I came across this bar because my office is in the neighborhood. They have great drinks, friendly staff and good music. The decor is chic and there is an area you can smoke in the back. Nice place to unwind and meet nice people.
