Unprofessional - Maria, the stylist I was recommended by the salesman on the street, was a half hour late to arrive at work let alone be ready to start my appointment. Hyacinth kindly started on washing my hair while I waited.
When Maria asked me if I wanted layers - I said no - then when she showed me my haircut she told me that she had put layers in anyway.
Hair cut was uneven. I couldn't tell straight away because Maria over blow-dried my bob. I realised when I later had to style my hair myself... there was a 'gap' on the left-rear of the bob and then longer layers on the right-rear.
Disappointed. Gary, the sales guy on the street, told me the salon was offering a special to the first 25 'cute' girls only. While I didn't buy into that, I let him show me some reviews. He didn't want to show me the yelp reviews, but I looked them up on my own phone while he was standing next to me. There were some negative reviews, but I also found enough good reviews to inform my decision to accept the deal. I was wanting to get a haircut, and while in the past I've been to nice, up-market stylists, I now usually go to Just Cuts who do a decent job for under $30.
Okay, haircut done. Then time for the mani-pedi. I do my own nails and this was my first professional one. I think the manicurist's name was Sophia (but could be wrong). She seemed rough and careless - but I didn't know any better having not been to a professional before so thought this might be reasonable. But after she completed my pedi, and while I was waiting for the mani to dry, my stylist decided she wanted to get her nails done. The manicurist seemed much more gentle and precise with Maria's hands than mine so I started to feel a little sad, waiting for my manicure to set and watching her do a nicer job on my stylist. My toes turned out very nicely - can't complain about the finish - however, the polish on my mani shrunk away significantly from the edge of the nails before the end of the day. So overall I wasn't impressed with the mani-pedi service either.
The staff were all friendly enough - except the manicurist. I felt like she didn't enjoy touching people's hands and feet for a living - which is fair enough - but it's not professional to make sure that the clients realise you wish they weren't in front of you. And to feel like this for my first mani-pedi made the whole thing a lot less of a special treat for myself.
I spent c. $80 buying the special from Gary - which included the haircut, wash, blow dry, 'cellophane'/shine hair treatment and mani-pedi. Then a service fee of $15 plus tip - but because the girl behind the counter misunderstood my instructions to make the service fee plus tip total $50 (she instead deducted the service fee plus a tip of $50) - the entire service cost me about $150. I forgave the error and figured I wouldn't miss the $15 too much. Probably not usually un unreasonable amount to spend getting all this done - but next time I'm gonna save myself $120, do my own nails and just go to Just Cuts.
I probably would have left the experience as 3 stars if not for the uneven cut. Now I just feel like I threw money away. I was visiting from Australia - and as someone who got spruiked to on the street - I recommend you go in with open eyes.
I don't understand why there are more negative reviews for this salon on Yelp than anywhere else, but I'm going to put this review on all relevant sites.
KayMarie rocks! – Kaymarie is why I go to this salon!!
I am in love with KayMarie. I am transitioning out of a relaxer and have decided to do a long term transition instead of a big chop ( 9 months and going strong). I have curly 4a hair. She is the best person I have been to when it comes to styling and taking care of curly hair. She is so gentle and patient, which is a requirement for my hair. I have met other of her clients who are very satisfied.
I have also referred her to many friends and each one has been happy with her services (and all my friends do not have the same hair type as me so she is definitely versatile ). I also really like the ambiance of the salon, and it is in a nice location. I hope this review helps someone!
Great salon for women of all backgrounds – I had a great experience here and it will be my new salon home. Being bi-racial, my hair can be tough to style, but this salon is great for women of color. Hyacinth, my stylist, was incredibly experienced, yet affordable. Two thumbs up.
The Best Short Hair Cut I Have Ever Had! – I'm beside myself - just got the best precision short hair cut I have ever had. Hyacinth, the stylist is amazing. She is a true perfectionist and cuts with unparalled precision.
Everyone has noticed my new "do", and wants to know where I got it done. If you are looking to bring in Spring with a new style, put your head in Hyacinth's hands. You will not be dissapointed!
Great Hair Salon!! – I had a haircut today for the first at this salon, I am really very pleased with the results, great salon, great staff, they listen to you, a great Midtown address without the feel of walking in a factory
Not worth the price – Great Salon!! I really like this place and although the prices are a bit high the stylist are amazing, especially KayMarie-request her if you go she will rock your world!!
excellent! – Okay, I had a hair DISASTER a few days ago, and I needed a corrective color. Thankfully I found this place. Everyone took good care of me, hyacinth especially! She is a perfectionist, so you will not walk out of there without a great look. She bleached, toned, and trimmed my hair, and the difference is amazing! I can't recommend this place enough. Also, this place has MOVED to 34th street between Madison and Fifth. And beware: it's rather tiny and on the second floor, so look hard!
Terrific Affordable Haircut on 34th Street with Talented Stylist – Michael Christopher is the salon that I've been seeking for years. Hyacinth gave me a terrific haircut yesterday -- she really knows what types of cuts work well with different hair types. The salon is brand sparkling new with a comfortable and calming atmosphere. I look forward to many repeat visits.
