LOVE THIS FAMILY OWNED RESTAURANT – This family owned and operated business is the bomb! Ever hungry at 4:00 am? They have the best feta cheese, roma tomatoes & chicken pizza in town. It's only $15.15 for a medium, feeds 3 adults and takes only 15 minutes (if you are picking up).
The staff is always so friendly and they are open 24 hours. I order at least once a week, it's absolutely worth it. Support your local economy by purchasing at local small businesses.
Great late night spot and great Greek food! – Great place for late night eating - good food and great service. The Greek omelet is fantastic! The lamb gyros are also great. The staff is very friendly. Apparently this location and the one on Westheimer had some sort of legal battle and legally are no connected. The Westheimer location has mediocre food and the staff, especially the manager, are rude and often yell at customers.
Our waitress has been the same the last couple of times and was great.
We say the 607 West Gray location is GREAT!
Not Impressed – My wife and I decided m taking a break from Katz's and do somthing different. One's-a-Meal is an institution. How could we wrong?
Here's how: dips were very heavy and fatty (and this from a guy raised heavily on milk and cheese!). The meat was very greasy, the terxture was wrong for Greek gyro meat, and the seasoning didn't taste right either. The feta cheese was nor wonderful, the gyro sour cream sauce lacked something (and it was heavy)...Even the small greek salad that come with the small was REALLY small, and the dressing on the side was not great; too much of the wrong vinegar is my guess.
My wife felt moved to compain too the (probable) manager, butheseemed unmovedand uninterested, andentirely without comment.
BTW, even the men's room was extremely hot, with no A/C. Didn't seem intetrest in thata news either.
Next time we're on that street, we'll go one more block to a GOOD meal at Katz's, and at about the same price.
Sad, sad, sad. This was not the review I hoped to write.
I apologize for your recent experience. We are very proud of our food and have won "Best Greek Food" in Houston twice. I also apologize for the air conditioning..we did have problems the other day...but HOPE, we have finally resolved the issue. Tough to spend anytime in Houston with no a/c.
If you care to contact me directly through our website, I'd be happy to treat you and your wife to another meal.
Beware Classless Owner that Chases Customers Outside – I went in to One's a Meal with some friends late one night expecting some reasonable fare and good service. To start, The food took a long time, was served lukewarm, and by await staff so overworked that they were visibly sweating onto the food and guests as they served it! Gross.
As it was time to pay, i approached the Greek owner at the cashier to cover the tab and my friends waited right outside in the parking lot next to the vehicle talking. Both of my credit cards were declined. I explained that I only had some of the cash and I would step outside to gather the rest from my friends. He began to give me a suspicious look which made no sense at all. As i was getting the cash together, we all turned around to see the owner standing LESS THAN 5 FEET FROM US By OUR CAR giving us an angry look. I handed him the cash for the bill and said,
" You should know better than to follow a guest outside for any reason." He promptly replied, " You should get some decent credit cards !" and stormed back inside.
For anyone that is not aware, one of the MOST important rules of operating a restaurant is to never ever follow guests outside for any reason, whether intoxication, walking the check, regardless of the reason. It is illegal, unsafe, and poor etiquette. The owner has no legal power other than to call the police or walk next door to the HPD station if he feels someone has just walked the check. In all my years as restaurant management student or working in restaurants I have never seen a single action go against all legal, etiquette, and common precautions for restauranteurs.
It baffles me that this muppet owner has been around this long and still has no decency, embarrassing patrons by following them outside as they trying to solve a situation. I hope one day One's a meal can provide some real service! Avoid at all costs Houston!
I am very sorry for your experience...however, I am the owner of the restaurant and did no such thing. I do apologize for your treatment regardless...if you would please contact me directly via our website...I would be happy to make it up to you in any way possible. Thank you. Nicholas
OOPA! – must try the appetizer--BOILED OCTOPUS. they were large, thick and juicy. spritz a bit of lemon, and BONA PETIT!
their entree dishes were large. i packed 1/2 my shrimp kabob, which was delicious by the way, to go.
it's awesome also that it's open 24 hrs for night owls like myself.
MUST COME BACK!
Thank you so very much for the kind words......
We were Robbed! – My wife and I went into this place to try it out..and I had my 2 small kids with me. Not knowing what was good, and looking over the menu, I asked the nice waiter(I think manager). I said I was trying to eat low fat and so was my wife. He said, "I will choose for you, and for your wife"...he was thinking fish. The kids, he chose a small pizza. He was such a nice man, we didn't turn his offer down. Well, out comes a egg plant dip, which was ok...then the small pizza came for the kids...my little girl didn't like pepporoni, so he sent out another without asking. This time a cheese just for her...again, nice guy. After a long wait, our dinner's came out. He ordered me salmon, with sides, and my wife got shrimp! ok..it was good....not low fat though and it was $90!!!! ..for a Tuesday night out with the kids! Don't ever trust anyone and definetely don't let these guys order for you ... I was stupid to fall into this trap. I know you guys are laughing at me now ..LOL, but really. I was ripped off! This is not a fine dining place!
I am VERY sorry that you guys had this experience. Mr. John kinda takes pride in knowing what people like...ask any of his regular customers and they'll tell you they haven't seen a menu in years : ) Regardless...there is no way a meal out for 4 should be 90 when kids are involved. Please go to our website and contact me directly...I'd like to either refund some of the purchase...or get you a gift card for a future meal...your choice. Thank you and my apologies again!!!
More than One Meal – As a native Houstonian, I'm ashamed to say I never went to One's A Meal. Until recently. I'm not a late night person but I they are open 24 hrs for all your late night cravings.
I went for lunch. And for $7 I ate for DAYS. I went again and got stuck in a typical Houston down pour ... so I had a glass of wine. It was the perfect lunch.
The hot appetizer sampler is enough to feed 2 for 2 full meals. The gyro is the same. And both are mighty tasty. But the reason you go to One's A Meal [outside of the fact it's a Houston tradition] is the owner ... who has come to my table at each visit and made us laugh. It's like eating in an old friend's house but more food and friendlier.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.....
One's a Meal for Late Night Selection – My husband and I went here one night after painting our garage for hours on end. We were hungry and wanted different things; he wanted Greek, I wanted Not Greek. We decided to go to One's a Meal since it offers different types of food (Greek and Not Greek, as it happens) and it was open late.
Our waitress was kind and prompt and offered several suggestions when I didn't know what to order. We ate the provided bread (pita) sticks and marinara sauce while we decided on our entrees. The crispy bread was positively addicting which may have set our expectations for the marinara sauce too high because it was flat and tinny.
I ended up getting the chicken soup and my husband got the gyro. I loved the chicken soup because the broth tasted house made instead of from a can. They used orzo in the broth and served the dish with a lemon wedge to squeeze into the soup. It was a nice departure from traditional chicken soup and I appreciated the Greek touches (yes, EVEN THOUGH I SAID I DIDN'T WANT GREEK. My husband took joy in pointing the same thing out to me.). The soup was served with a little salad that was unremarkable and from a bag. The dressing was from a bottle which was disappointing.
My husband's gyro was decent. Their yogurt sauce tasted like it had a lot of sour cream in it which I didn't care for. The french fries served with it were previously frozen, but the meat was nicely seasoned and the flatbread was pretty good as well.
I'd like to go back and try more things from the menu as I would wager a guess they have some gems on their menu. It was hit or miss from the items we ordered, but well worth another visit.
Thank you for your review, I do however need to address a couple of items. Our salads are made fresh daily and never come from a bag. The same holds true of our dressing, it too is made in house and is actually a bit of a pain to make : ) Thank you again, and please come by again and introduce yourself, would love to suggest some meals for ya.
