Not what it used to be but still adequate – I left Equinox because I thought it had gotten too commercial and stopped providing the level of customer service that was warranted for the price they charged. Nothing horrible to report but I think there are better options for your money in NYC.
wonderful experience at the equinox club :) – I have gotten a couple a massages at the spa ( each therapist is well qualified and experienced, and has their own signature style that makes them the best!!)
Even though at first i wasnt a member, I had access to little extras the days i booked an appointment, like free use of the steam room, and classes going on that day- whats great is I usually would take a yoga class right after or before my massage, ive never felt so alive :)
The club on 54th st is definitely highest in quality when it comes to a pleasant experience, all the staff smile, you rarely wait for anything and their motto stays true to its words- they never compromise the member experience, ever :) I absolutely recommend this club to everyone who appreciates a great quality in services!!
Great gym, fantastic trainers and instructors – This is one of the first Equinox gyms to open in Manhattan, so it's not as fancy as the others. It has the same equipment however, and the staff and instructors are great. I go to Equinox gyms all over the country, but find 54th Street the friendliest of the Equinox family, superbly managed and no question ever goes unanswered. The guy I train with is a former gymnast and is incredibly knowledgeable about health and fitness. The gym is very crowded during prime time, and not much you can do about that, since that's the case with any good gym, especially one that is a "corporate gym" like 54th street because it's located near all of the midtown office towers. But weekends are great. There's nothing about Equinox at 54th Street I don't like. When I go out to LA, I use the Sunset Blvd gym, and my training sessions are fully transferable. The LA clubs are really fantastic (everyone is always in a good mood) and when I check in someone at the desk inevitably says, "Hey, are you the guy from New York? How are you?" Really blew me away...
Upscale, Zen-inspired gym catering to the fit professional. – The Scene
With its ultra-clean, minimalist décor and its topnotch staff, Equinox raises the bar for chain health clubs. At consistently spacious facilities, the design team continually maximizes natural light and highlights organic architectural quirks. Equipment from industry standards like Cybex and Hammerstrength are paired with high-end machinery--including one specifically designed for the company by Life Fitness. Even the piped-in music (which varies from room to room) has been thoughtfully programmed. Locker rooms are uniformly spotless.
The in-house personal-training program--which approaches strength, balance and coordination in a cyclical pattern--is so highly regarded that some independent gyms recognize it in lieu of more established national certifications. Indeed, instructors in the top tier must have academic articles published in their area of expertise. Classes are offered round the clock and range from Spinning and yoga to more unique hybrids incorporating boxing and ballet. Many studios boast sprung floors.
Going Down Hill – I've been a member for a few years and the gym has gotten worse and worse. Things that break tend to stay broken. The shower in the steam room has been broken for over three months. Three of the ten or so shower doors have been broken for about two months. The equipment is aging and not being replaced, half the headphone plugs on the cardio machines are broken. Some machines don't work well, they make loud clacking noises or turn off in the middle of workouts. This is all recent and not what a customer should expect from a premier fitness club. On the plus side, the class are great and the staff is friendly. The locker room is clean and safe (even though it's falling apart).
The gym is no longer worth the money, it's sad because the staff is great and friendly, but whoever is in charge on maintaining the place needs an intervention.
Equipment has seen better days – I am sorry, but this location is not maintained very well & the equipment is no longer up to snuff - it seems that one-quarter of the cardio machines (at least) are broken every time I visit the gym. Plus, the monthly dues keep rising. The gym seems to not be as clean as it once was when I joined approx. 5 years ago.
Great club but client service stinks – The classes are great and so are the facilities. I thought I was upgrading when I switched from NY Sports, but in the customer service department, I definitely downgraded. Expect to have to ask over and over to receive what they promised when they signed you. I joined 2 months ago and still haven't received any of the promotional perks offered at the time I signed.
