This place gives Indian food a bad name – This is the first time I've ever been motivated to write a review on a restaurant. Please do not form your opinion on Indian food based on an experience in this place.. the dishes are watery, the meet is low grade and poor quality and the food is exceptionally bland, except for the notably spicy dishes.. after a glimpse into the kitchen, I'm just praying I don't get sick (I just ate there). You're better off going to Trader Joes and buying the prepackaged pouches of easy to prepare Indian meals than going to this place, seriously.. I was disgusted.. if I wasnt such a modest/shy person, I would have sent it back to the kitchen. IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR GOOD INDIAN FOOD: its well worth it to go a few miles in either direction away from Passage to India. Check out Davis Square - Namaskar is my personal favorite, especially the weekend buffet - or try Diva. If you head toward Inman Square go for Kabob Factory, Punjabi Dahba, or Haveli's (which is not as great as it once was now that its under new management, but still 18x's better than Passage to India). If I saved at least one reader from making the horrible mistake of going to this place, I'll know I've made a difference.

If you are white they will serve you with you smile, if you are brown... – They will serve you with great smile, if you are NOT from India or Pakistan. So if you are an American you can go there and enjoy. But even if you are from India or Pakistan, you just have to get used to, and they will nice to you eventually, if they see you are coming everyday.

Better than it looks – Glancing in from the street, you wouldn't expect Passage to India to be a tasty meal. In a barely converted diner-type storefront, the cloth napkins and decorative lighting fixtures look out of place. However, the food is tasty, and servers are responsive to spiciness requests -- a nice change from other New England Indian restaurants where everything may be a touch bland, regardless of your order.

As with any Indian place, vegetarian options are varied and plentiful.

Best in Salem – I have had consistent, wonderful food and service at this adorable Indian restaurant. The owner is attentive, the wine is excellent, and you cant beat the value. I recently attended a dinner for four and one bottle of wine, one appetizer, a specialty bread and three entrees set us back only 75 dollars including tip. Given the restaurants quality, this is amazing. If you like spicy food you are in luck. If, however, you prefer your dishes mild you need only ask. I would recommend making a reservation if you plan to visit in the evening.
