Reviews for Homegrown

Made to order sandwiches which feature a wide variety of organic and local ingredients. Not a bad combo on the board. The bright, sleek room and friendly service seal the deal.

Their breakfast sandwiches are a great way to start the day.

Kick-Butt Turkey Sanny – We wen to the Homegrown at Melrose Market. Turkey, Gouda, Bacon on Yummy Bread. While the prices is high, you get what you pay for. Good ingredients are not cheap and you can taste the difference.

"Sandwich Environmentalism" in the heart of Fremont – The sustainable/environmental ethos is obvious and ever-present in this Fremont sandwich shop. The decor is sparse, modern-meets-rustic, with a little down-home thrown in for good measure. A floor-to-ceiling chalkboard on your left bears the menu, a collection of soups, salads and sandwiches featuring local and sustainable ingredients. The sandwiches are creative (lamb meatball sub with field greens and goat cheese) and sometimes strange (bluffer nutter = grilled peanut butter, bacon and marshmallow fluff sandwich on white bread ) but are well-prepared and run around $8-$10. All sandwiches are served with a side of slaw, which I found underwhelming, or homemade potato chips ($1 extra) which were delish. Homegrown also offers catering and "tote" lunches.

Sustainable Sandwiches – Homegrown is the ideal neighborhood lunch spot- bright, cheery and of course delicious food. Their mission: to serve locally sourced food (zoes meats, beachers, stumptown coffee, essential baking co.), sustainable focused at an affordable price. They do this well. A favorite for many is the flank steak sandwich: bright flavors,a bit of kick (hello chimichurri) and blue cheese. I love their seasonal soups including a crisp and cool cucumber melon soup I sampled this summer. Sometimes they fry root veggies (generously seasoned too!), a refreshing change to the standard fare of fries (they have those too). I have yet to try their fried pickles.

I like that they offer the combo option so you can sample multiple items of the menu. Pick a half a sandwich (selected ones), a salad or the soup; mix & match to your hearts delight! Homegrown is also very vegetarian friendly, it equally serves carnivores and plant eaters alike. On my list of to try next: the reuben and breakfast (it's supposed to be da'bomb).

Citysearch Editorial Review – Sandwiches are too frequently built for function (quick to eat, easy on the wallet) rather than flavor; not so at this Fremont shop. Here, flavor comes second only to sustainability—the eatery prides itself on not only using sustainable ingredients in their monster sammies, but being an all-around green business utilizing compostable products and recycled materials. What do you get with all this do-gooding? A choice of killer sandwiches available for breakfast or lunch, from favorites like flank steak with caramelized onions and bleu cheese mousse to seasonal offerings like a Greek-inspired lamb meatball sub, all complemented by some of the house-made potato chips or fried dill pickle spears. Enjoy your lunch in the sunlit (though decidedly too tiny) dining room and you’ll likely spend the time staring at the massive chalkboard menu, wishing you had more stomach space and figuring out what to have next time.
