Ask a sommelier where they go when they want to BYOB, and chances are, they'll mention Jonathan's The Rub. The small place gets packed with people waiting for tables, but the food is delicious (their burger won the Houston Press Burger Bracket in 2012) and it's well worth the wait.
Absolutely love the place! A Memorial hidden gem, and the cat is starting to get out of the bag, because the rest of Houston knows about it now. Beat the wait. Go early
The tableclothes and napkins are nice! – I have traveled most of Europe and all of America, I live in Houston and love it and it's eateries!....& Johnathan's is one of the worst I have encountered. I have here in front of me an ad from dishtip,(another city critique on eateries in Houston,) touting the wonder fried chicken served at this place...crunchy on the outside, yet juicy on the inside...it says, and several reviews agreeing....we arrived got the menu..no fried chicken, and folks the prices were mostly in the $30 range...the waitress said she did'nt believe they ever served fried chicken...a big selection of 5 brands of beer...all imported....I ordered pasta w/meatballs...horrible...al dent means uncooked here, the sauce was spicy hot crushed tomatos with maybe red pepper...too hot, the meat balls was like my aunt pearl's meat loaf..cheap hamburger and bread crumbs, and the bread was just the crust as far as we could tell sprinkled with parmsean cheese...little 2 in. morsels. We will never return....and we will go to 5 star eateries and get food equal to the VERY HIGH PRICES. Oh, think we could have done better at the convenience store next door instead of making our way thru the tables set on the sidewalk...way classy ...for Reynosa Mexico maybe.
Adult Day Care With A Kitchen – the food is "ok" and may even be "outstanding", but last night, it was uneatable.
last night, my wife and i were witness to an extremely obnoxious customer at the restaurant, yelling insults at other patrons and making inappropriate slurs of all stripes through out the restaurant. the hostess and jonathan were both unwilling to tell the customer to "behave or leave" and even made the comment "that it was not the restaurant's fault that a customer was being obnoxious."
we endured the "whole show" for about 45 minutes, after which "the jerk" finally left in a wake of his own congratulatory achievement - "now, that's the way to "work a room !!""
i called the restaurant today to ask for the obnoxious patron's name so that i could send him a bill for my ruined dinner. i left word for jonathan, but the call was returned by "jessica" - lord jonathan's daughter. she started with "i already know about the incident last night" and "that we (the other patrons) were "so out of line and that we were such "homophobes"" (yes, that is the word she used).
i told her that it was the management's job to control their guests. she replied "that it was not their responsibility and that the restaurant could not be blamed for another guest's conduct..."
i said, "then you can imagine that we will not be returning in the future" and her shrieked response was "we will be better off without all of you "gay haters"".... and then she slammed down the phone. she must have been having a bad day, i suppose.
the only part of her message that was not clear to me was, "where did any conversation about "gays" come from ?" beats me... no one said anything of the sort, either last night, or today.
but, it is nice to know that business is that good in at least one of the sectors in houston....
the atmosphere is one i would expect in a sitcom about a dysfunctional group of people desperately trying to run a restaurant...
knowing that we will not be returning to jonathan's and jessica's version of "alice in wonderland", is a rare reward.
Jonathan's The Rub MISTAKE – Jonathan's The Rub will forever be remembered by my family and friends as "Houston's trendy dining mistake." Most alarming was the MEAT served which not only shook the entire table as my husband sawed through it, but WAS OLD. FRIGHTENING! As experienced diners, we often rely on great service to cushion bad food. NOT HERE. The service was equally horrendous. I repeatedly comforted my husband throughout the evening by ensuring him that this would provide a great laugh for us in the future. It was a true disappointment.
Great little joint – Over the years I've watched this shopping center go through multiple transitions. My favorite has been the addition of Jonathons. Just be sure to relax, enjoy the good food, and convo. It's a small place so sometimes takes a little longer but the end result is worth it!
The burgers are huge and really good. :)
Wonderful Food and Relaxed Dining – What a great find in hustling, bustling Houston. We had the Filet Asada on a creamy queso corn sauce and the pork tenderloin in another delicious sauce. The chicken and sausage gumbo was really a soup, but a fabulous soup, and there are not enough adjectives to describe the most amazing coconut pie. This is dining at its best, delicious food and an easy, low key ambiance.
terrible experience – Never in my life have I had such a horrible dining experience! When my family arrived our estimated wait time was 20 minutes and it took almost an hour. I understand this was an estimate, but it has always been my experience that the restaurant will over estimate to keep their customers happy. There was no waiting room inside so we sat on the patio in the heat. I watched several groups wait in their car for a table because it was so hot. Then when we finally got our table we received our dinner salads before our appetizer. While waiting for our meal we had been told by three different waitresses that it was on its way, it will be out in just a bit, and one actually told us that she saw our meals being plated and that they looked awesome. Our food took over an hour to get, and my brother’s pork chops that were suppose to be cooked medium rare were grossly over cooked. We saw a large cloud of smoke engulf the open kitchen and couples that were seated after my family got their meals before us… I can put two and two together. My mother asked one of the waitresses if there was something wrong with our order, and we were told that the tickets were mixed up but it would be coming soon. She offered us a free dessert, which we declined since we were already irked by the service. The chef came out and spoke to my brother and apologized about the mix up. If there was a problem to begin with own up to it, I understand mistakes happen, but do not lie to my family repeatedly about the situation. The chef offered to cook another plate of pork chops, which he did, but they were not seasoned well since they did not have time to marinate. Two meals out of the four were comped and we received a 50% discount on the other two. My family has traveled the world and to be treated like this in our own neighborhood...
