Avalon has gone through many changes over the years, as its owners have changed its name and decor every decade. It was Boston-Boston in the '70s and Metro in the '80s. With the most recent makeover, it's now bigger, badder--and the closest thing to a big-time New York club you'll find in Boston. Up-to-date music blares from a first-class sound system, accompanied by lots of lights. The stylish crowd is evenly divided between students and professionals.
Catch a rock band early in the evening, go home and change, then come back after 10pm to dance until 2am. Thursday's International Night lures a large foreign-student crowd, while on Fridays "Avaland" features top-notch local and acclaimed national DJs (Paul Oakenfold, Armand Van Helden). More local DJs pump up Saturdays, and Sunday's Gay Night is legendary, as seemingly all of Boston's most beautiful gay men show off their ace dance skills.
Just keep in mind - Dont ever use your Credit Card at Avalon Boston.
Avoid if the show is sold out – Avalon oversells every concert. I've been to 2 sold out shows there in past 2 months and both times you could barely get into the room. Pushing, shoving, and yelling. Just gross.
I went to few sold out shows after the fire at The Station in RI and you could get in and around, get to the bar and actually stand on the floor without feeling like a lemming. Since then the numbers have steadily creeped up... Sickening.
Basically if the show is sold out I won't go. It's not like you'll see the show anyway.
DO NOT see a concert here – I went to see Martin Sexton, an incredible artist. Avalon over-sold the venue and it was impossible to see, never mind dance to the performer! The venue was highy disappointing.
FANTASTIC NIGHTCLUB – Last night I went to Avalon for the first time. A bunch of my friends are regulars so I decided to go along. It's a fantastic club! The drinks are excellent. Great bartending service. The crowd is trendy and there's a dress code, which is fine with me. The dj was really good. I enjoyed the music alot. It's a great atmosphere, great location, pretty much great overall. I will go to Avalon again. My friends were right.
Avalon is one of the best clubs in New England! – I completely agree with user: Ranndino. The people that go to Avalon and then come on here and write ridiculous reviews need to get a clue. Avalon is not some random college bar where you can approach the dj and get him to play whatever you want...these are world renowned dj's that come and play the music that people want to hear and what they are already famous for! As far as the person that complained about the dress code and claiming that there wasn't any information on it...use your head please! Just because its a tuesday night and its hot outside doesn't mean there isn't a dress code...this is an upscale place...not a beach bar. If this person had simply gone to the avalonboston website they would have gotten all of the information they needed...its just laziness people! Oh and for the guy that mentioned the "trashy floor dancers"....they are totally NOT trashy! They are similar to go-go dancers...they are sometimes scantilly clad but are always very professional and classy...they aren't strippers people! So overall, yes you will pay a bit more than other clubs (but only on nights that world class dj's appear), you will not pay anymore for drinks than you would at any other club and yes you are able to dance. The only thing I would recommend is that if you decide to utilize the coat check and its a particularly crowded night, towards the end of the night get in line a bit earlier than usual to ensure you won't be waiting in the huge line at the very end of the night. Other than that Avalon is a great club...people need to get a clue.
Great local concert venue, Avoid at all other costs – For a small local venue, this place is great. Lot's of room to move around and get a great view of the main act. No food is offered at the venue, but they do offer a wide variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages at a numerous amount of bar areas inside the club. Prices for drinks are relatively high at about $8 for a mixed drink/beer.
Knowledge and total cluelessness – A definite trend shows up. The people who understand dance music think that Avalon is by far the best club in Boston (which it is). The people who are completely clueless and expect to come and hop around to the usual top 40 garbage stuffed down their throats by commercial radio end up being disappointed. Before you go out do a little bit of research so that you don't stumble into something unexpected and then come here and write idiotic reviews. For those who have a clue there is simply no other club in Boston that even comes close. For people like the moron who said that the music was terrible and that DJs did not take his requests - Avalon is not your barmitzvah! Yes, the world's top DJs don't play the sh*t you listen to and no, they will not take your idiotic requests to play "Sweet Caroline".
Snobs abound... – I went to see Tiesto Jun 15 (was rescheduled w/o notice) The staff would not let me in since I was wearing shorts (humidity at 85%),, let's see Tues night, techno dj concert, AND A DRESS CODE? Last I checked this was not a Celine Dion concert were we would all be sitting down screeming bravo. No dress code mentioned in online ticket sales. 2hrs of driving for nothing! Also,, Advance ticket was about $ 2.00 more than at the door ticket due to convenience fees and such.
Expensive Drinks & Boring – I think Avalon has reached critical mass in terms of its "infamous" market status in Boston and elsewhere. And due to the churn in the number of new visitors each day at the club, they could care less about frequest fliers. It's like the houseing market in Massachusetts - i.e. a sellers paradise. The bar tender was extremely snooty for some reason. The drinks are by far the most expensive on Landsdowne Street and the music seldom good enough to dance to. More of a place for first-timers to visit and leave. Would not recomend it to someone unless some famous DJ swings by. Times have changed and there are tons of other places that one could have a good night out.
