Great sushi, so why the one star? – Every time I go to San Sushi in Cockeysville, I feel a pang of guilt. On the one hand, their sushi is on another level of quality, which says a lot considering the fierce competition in the Towson/Lutherville/Timonium/Cockeysville area.
However, almost every time I've been to San Sushi, I've had to bear witness to the horrible treatment of the servers by the owner 'Sam'. You could play a game and drink for every time he insults his staff - in front of his customers, of course - and be half way to the ER for alcohol poisoning after 10 minutes. He's really that bad, and if you have any human feeling in you, you can't help but empathize for the poor waitresses who have to be publicly insulted by him.
It gets worse though. Usually, I'm waited on by the same girl who is always very kind and helpful. One time, when I walked into the restaurant, Sam looked up from behind the counter and said "Hey did you come to see my girl?" My face got immediately red; so did hers - she was standing right there. Apparently, Sam thinks he's running some kind of whore house.
Another time, as that same girl was finishing up her shift while I was sitting right there at the bar, he imparted some of his sagely advice: "go home, lay your boyfriend; he give you good energy for work tomorrow." Apparently, this girl really needed the money because she just took it and said nothing. I won't forget how she looked though: defeated and despondent.
The blatant sexual harassment is pretty awful, but most of the time, Sam settles with calling his waitresses "stupid" right in front of the customers.
But I'll be damned if that isn't some of the best sushi I've ever had.
Best Sushi in Town – My family has been going here for years now and we refuse to eat any other sushi because we cannot find any that compares at all. The best is the sexy evan roll, which you wont see on the menu unless its a special but they will make it for you whenever you want. They also have a roll called the yummy yam for people who want to try sushi without fish, and its also good for kids. On top of the sushi they also have great authentic Japanese dishes. For the best experience go between Monday and Thursday, sit at the sushi bar, and get noi to help you, he's the best sushi chef. They also really value their customers and have a party every year for their best customers where everything is free if they invite you.
Nothing too special – I enjoyed the food for a fast place to stop and get a little bit of sushi / japanese food. I wouldn't mind going back again, but I wouldn't place it at the top of my list. I prefer a place called "Pacific Rim". The service is very good most of the time. I have only had one visit that was somewhat slow, and the food is always delicious. When it's crowded, it gets too crowded.
The BEST Sushi – THe best sushi around ! THere are many items that are not always on the menu that are out of this world !!! The TERP ROLL or the MARLIN ROLL !!!!! Super fantastic !!!!
Get there !!!!!
Best Sushi in Baltimore – Since moving to Baltimore in '97 this place has become my regualr sushi joint! Hands downt this is the best sushi in Baltimore. (Excellent Thai food as well)! Get the Terp Roll - even if its not on the specials they'll make it for you and you will NOT be dissapointed.
Now is that a way to treat patrons? – I have eaten here before, but had some out of town guests that came in for the weekend. We were 10 minutes late for our reservation of 5, no one came up to us for 15 minutes. Then the owner laughed (literally laughed)when approacehd, in our face because there were no tables available. I have never in my life seen the owner of an establishment act that way to his customers. I will never eat there again, nor will I recommend it to others. We went down the street to Edo Sushi and had an amazing meal!
