Intrusive Marketing and Harrassment – I did a trial at a few Merritt locations over the past several years and each time had very poor experiences, so I never joined. Recently, I started to receive an email a day, and then 3 in one day. So, I sent a reply and request (even to the CEO and another mgr) asking to reduce them--and they sent me another solicitation that day and then the next.

The locker rooms stink--clogged/dirty showers. They also have some rude staff.

Don't join, don't give them your email. They are a poorly run club.

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE – I joined Merritt Athletic Club last March on the recommendation of a friend. That was a horrible mistake.

1. They charged me $67/mo and acted as if it was a deal. Brick Bodies is $40. Planet Fitness is even cheaper.

2. When I joined in March of 2010, I was given 4 weeks free. I turned in my free voucher on July 31st 2010 and was told it was too late for August and would be used in September. They never honored the voucher.

3. I quit in September and they charged me $99 while assuring me they would not take out any more money from my account.

4. On October 4, 2010, they took $4.01 from my account. When I confronted them they said it was for "two water bottles". I never purchased this (because I havent used their gym since May!) And the manager (who by the way had an attitude) told me they would have to "look back at their receipts".

To sum up, this gym pretends they have a lot to offer, but they have the same stuff any other gym has and offers at a cheaper price. Plus they will nickel and dime you to death. YOur better off saving your money and buying the Wii.

not a member – I go to Weight Watchers there on Saturday. Last weekend, we got a free workout. I'm glad we didn't have to pay for it. I got help only once. I was trying to use a leg lift machine but noone helped me. I found out the weight was too heavy. I'm glad that I didn't sign up for membership

MERRITT ATHLETIC CLUB: not worth your time – If you belong to the MERRITT ATHLETIC CLUB, please quit ASAP. These barbarous smurfs will gorge on your money, send you excessive emails, panhandle your friends, post unintelligible ads on walls to pull MORE money out of you, and laugh in your face when you attempt to resign 3 weeks in advance. there are so many cheaper gyms! and if you only joined for the pool, look up baltimore aquatics: you can swim for $25 for the whole summer instead paying $270 for 3 months while waiting for steroid-hungry hogs to get off your towel. Also, the manager at the towson location, CLANCY, can gulp a mean one. go inside and show him what you got.

Worst terms and conditions – I have a very bad experiance. No good words

I joined this club on 23rd of July and enrolled for monthy basis scheme - This was my first gym experiance. On the enrollment day itself i mentioned that i will be moving out to india in Sept. 08 and would return back probably in Feb 09.

At the time of enrollment it wasnot made clear that this scheme is minimum for 3 months other wise i might not joined for this - I paid costly enrollment free ($99) plus two months of fee upfront inorder to use the facility hassel free.

But the sad part was later when i went to cancel my membership on 31st Aug - I was told that i need to pay for sept. and for Oct. i have already paid (that was the surprising part i thought i paid for Aug and Sept).

Now i am leaving on 4rd of Sept i availed the facility just for one month and 1-2 days in July and i end up paying for three months plus the enrollment fee.

So a month service costed me 99+3*59 = $276 and it doen't make any sense to me.

Here i am making sure after this treatment and after a lengthy talk with the manager (althougt he talked very polietly) i will not join this club again in my life nor i will recommend any of my friend and family members to join this.

I found no place to complain - Otherwise i might have done it.

not worth the $$$!!! – First of all, I'm always highly suspicious of any review that says nothing but good things and is totally comprehensive in its description of what the business offers (i.e. sounds like an advertisement). I highly doubt any one member is going to know everything a gym has to offer off of the top of his or her head.

That said, I took up an opportunity to try this gym out and was very disappointed by what it had to offer. Perhaps 10-15 years ago this place was top notch, but from what I can see nothing has been done to keep it that way since. While there is a large selection of equipment, much of it is very old, including many pieces of primary equipment (such as cable crossovers, bench press, squat racks, and smith machines). The equipment is all a mish-mash of different brands (cybex, hammer strength, "german made", reebok(????)), leaving for little functional consistency and reliable operation. Plus, they actually have a room with a full selection of Keiser (air resistance-based) weight lifting equipment - something that was mostly long gone by the late 90's.

The decor (color scheme, fixtures, lighting, etc) is horrendous. Again, probably stylish a long time ago but nothing short of irritating now.

The one thing going for the place is that it has a lot of extras like an indoor pool, racquetball, indoor track, etc but if they are in anywhere near the same condition as the freeweight equipment then forget it, definitely not worth $90/month.

The Best Health Club in Maryland - Great Service, SO FRIENDLY! I love working out now. – I have always ben a thin guy, but never had any muscle definition. I went to take a tour of the Merritt's Downtown Athletic Club and was astonished to realize that it happens to be the old Train Station in Baltimore converted into this fabulous gym! The tour guide was amazing, the equipment is top notch, the trainers are all so INCREDIBLE and you will not believe some of the stories other members tell you about the goals they have accomplished through the help of the amazing staff.

The DAC has a lap pool, an indoor track, basketball courts, raquetball courts, AMAZING group fitness classes (check out the new BODYJAM classes that are so much fun that after the first week they are having to add more nights due to increased demand)!

The members are all so friendly - there are no judgements or feelings of discomfort, and I have made lots of friends and acquaintances just from being there a few times a week. People I have never met will often say hi to me on the machines and start a conversation! It is unlike anything I have ever seen.

It is true that they are not the cheapest gym in Maryland, but the overall value of this club makes it worth WAY more than my membership costs. A total 10!!!

Worst Gym in Baltimore - Unethical Billing Practices – These people are unethical and predatory. They will screw you over the payments and then claim that you did not do so. I do not recommend folks to join this gym at all but on the contrary make sure you avoid the hype of mediocre facilities, the apathetical staff and poor service. Cancel your memberships before you end up paying more for nothing.
