Good atmosphere but the mussels were very disappointing. Be prepared to remove the sand ladened beards and stomachs of the mollusks.
Horrible Service – The food was ok. With all the hype I was dissapointed int he mussels. I was even more dissapointed with the lack of service. We waited almost an hour and a half at the bar to be seated, when we were finally seated it took them another 45minutes to take our orders. From there it was like a ghost town if you were looking for a wait. Glasses were left empty. Dishes left on the table. We were considering desert but it took so long to get some attention that we just opted for the check. IF YOU HAVE TIME TO WASTE, YOO MIGHT WANT TO GIVE THEM A TRY.
The rep was built on mussels but this historic spot has a number of strong points. – The Scene
You'll need to slip down a side street to enter this local culinary institution. But once you've passed through the unassuming, off-the-beaten-track entryway, you'll be transported to an 18th-century English wharfside tavern where hunter green walls sport period lithographs and pub memorabilia and seafaring mementos abound. Live jazz in the adjacent bar enlivens the scene most nights of the week with a distinctly American flair.
Bertha's is famous for its mussels, yet plenty of other appetizing entrees are available like a to-die-for shellfish royale enlivened by a cream sauce flavored with sherry and the Pelican shrimp which finds a quiet accent in the addition of mild jalapenos to the wrap of cream cheese and bacon. Whether you opt for seafood, broiled meats or rice dishes, follow up your meal with the brandy-soaked Scottish trifle. It's pleasantly potent.
Ok.... – I see the bumper stickers everywhere. And I miss the place, the atmosphere, the music, the bar. But the restaurant? Well, I think there are far better places to eat in Fells. Bertha's is an institution, but stay in the bar and have a pint. It's worth it.
