Revolting pizza scam – So I called this place up from my out-of-state cell phone and wanted to order a pizza. I live in LA but I'm from somewhere else and have never bothered to get an in-state number. For whatever reason, the person taking my call refused to believe my order was legitimate, apparently thinking some out-of-towner had singled out their little restaurant for a prank (note this was a take-out order for a single pizza, not really the basis for an amusing prank), and asked me to repeat my phone number approximately 447,665 times. I was getting frustrated since the employee on the other end didn't seem to understand me no matter how clearly I enunciated. I was about to try saying it in some other language but it seemed that on the 447,666th time they finally got it.

A few minutes later my phone rang. They asked if I was really coming to pick up the pizza. I said yes. They said it would be ready in ten minutes.

I got to the place 25 minutes later and the pizza wasn't done. I was a little ticked, not so much about the lost time as about the absurd rigamarole; despite the hassle on the phone, they hadn't even put the pizza in the oven.

When it came time to pay up, they wanted two dollars more than the price on the coupon I brought in, the one they'd hung on the gate to my apartment and that had prompted me to place the order to begin with. The reason given for the higher price was the dreaded "tax." You know, the kind that isn't written down in any tax code, the kind that materializes out of thin air with no warning and no justification and tends to go directly into someone's pocket instead of to Uncle Sam. I asked what the name of this specific tax was and was handed an additional dollar bill in change; no explanation, no apology, no sense of shame. This is unacceptable.

The pizza was alright. I've had better and I've had worse.

These folks seem to have a hearing impairment as well as an honesty impairment. Next time, I'll go the corporate route and order Domino's.
