Authentic Salvadoran pupusas by Sunset Junction. – You don’t come here for the atmosphere, unless you’re looking for authentic, hole-in-the-wall, um … chic? Spanish is the primary language spoken in this homey spot, and other than a few pictures of the homeland (in this case, El Salvador) and a few tables on the sidewalk patio, it’s a pretty simple set-up: tile floors, hodge-podge tables, juice menu on the wall, Latin music on the stereo, soccer or telenovelas on the tube … all somehow refreshingly authentic. But you’re not here for the ambience, right? Right. You, my friend, are here for the pupusas. At two bucks a pop, you can get the dense, flat bread-stuffed delicacies with combinations of cheese, pork and beans, plus squash or loroco (an edible flower), all served with the traditional pickled cabbage. A quarter more will get you rice flour pupusas (pupusas de harina de arroz). Want to branch out? Sample the standards on the Plato Typico, with a pupusa, plantains, tamale, fried yucca, beans and cream. Hearty breakfasts are also on the menu, along with licuados (milk-based juice drinks), fresh fruit juices and horchata. Service is somewhat slow, but charming, nonetheless.
