The focus is on Coney Island hot dogs and doing them well. – In Short
Gaudy orange formica tables and matching chairs conjure images of '70s style. This place isn't about frills, it's about giving people simple choices for lunch or dinner during the rush of a business day, and providing a late-night stop to complete an evening of fun in the downtown area. Coney-inspired dishes are the only choices here. The traditional Coney dog is made with mustard and onions. Chili, hamburgers and chili dogs come with fries.

You just got to love this place...ask for the milk...and watch them pour it in a glass from arms length! If you want to be pampered like some suburb dog places then stay away...but if you know what you want and you know how to ask for itthen come on in...No fuss, just sit or stand and tell THE DOG PROS what you want and they will give it to you, and I have personally had a TO-GO order for twenty dogs and 10 frys filled in under 2 minutes! And yes, some of Detroits finest eat there and they only eat the best dogs. YepYou just got to love this place!!

What do you expect? – You're leaving a double-overtime Red Wings game and you're starving. Where do you go? Lafayette or American Coney Island! Set your expectations accordingly. Don't expect "fancy." This is NOT that kind of place. This is a place where hot dogs snap with flavor, and Michigan chilli fries get covered with cheese & onions. This is a roll-your-sleeves up, blue-collar kind of place. The waiters bark your order...they don't write it down (too fancy)! You're as likely to sit next to a bank president as a homeless person at the counter. If you see a guy bumming a dog, give your waiter a couple of bucks to get the guy some food. Manners? You don't come here for manners....you come here for the dogs, man! Loose burgers, combos, chili fries with cheese...loadem up with onions and a stripe of mustard...now that's Detroit!

Food not bad, service could use improvement. – Our first visit to Lafayette Coney Island was our last. When we entered the restaurant, we noticed there were 4 people working and five seated customers. We were told to take a seat and asked what we'd like. We asked for two coney's with everything. In a few minutes the waiter returned and dropped the plates on the table. While we were eating we noticed there were dirty dishes stacked in the sink and the floor was cluttered with litter. After we finished the meal the waiter asked if we would like something to drink. We said no and paid the bill.

Coney Island Mecca – I've been going there for at least 45 years and nothing changes. My idea of a perfect evening is a Red Wings game and Lafayette Coney Island afterward.

AWESOME! – One of the three places I always took out-of-town friends before I moved. [Xochi's and Pizza Papalis are the other 2]

Great food and atmosphere all thru the day.

The "coneys" served by Goldstar and Skyline down here in Cinci dont even come close.

The Lafayette Experience – A Detroit tradition that cannot be missed. Even if you do not want to eat here you should go for the experience. The atmosphere is one of a kind. The food is also excellent and a bargain by any standards.

Best Dogs IN Town – As a kid my father use to take us downtown to get a hotdog and the whole car smelled like onions for days ...As a mother now I take my kids there and I tell you ,theres no better place to get a good hotdog, fries and a pop ..Then afterward maybe take a ride on the people mover or Greek Town or just a drive along the water ....
