Much like the hobby shops/comic book stores that used to be around these parts(have vanished except Michigan toy soldier Co.)this is a dinky little store, kinda cluttered, with a cast of characters walking in and out and whom you will see more then once.My kinda place, neither stuffy or judgmental and the owner has always been helpful. That has been my experience at H&H.
Needs to clean up or shut the doors! ! ! – What a MESS, plain & simple. I was in the shop as a boy with my dad when it was THEE shop to go to for pipes and other smoke products. Now I am in my 50's and I was shocked at the dirty store, dust, trash, old stock that was way over priced & pipes and tobacco that might be just as old. He should clean up the store and get with the times if he wishes to stay open. Most of his display cases are empty and all he does is bragg about how many pipes and tobacco he sells on line, but I am thinking how my customers he is stealing money from... I will never return to purchase there again. It is very sad to see bit of history to fall off the shelve as this store has. It used to be the best in Grosse Pointe long ago, not anymore... And the owner thinks he has a gold mine??? When I asked him if he would ever sell such a place like this? his answer was, no one could afford his asking price since he has such one of akind pipes and the store is in a hot location... So I pressed for a price again, he said a few millon would cover his stock and store... That's fine Jim, you just keep dreaming for that buyer your never going to get, I will buy my pipes and tobacco in a clean store, fresh product & better service... If he shut the doors today, it would NOT be a loss... Sorry, but this is how I feel and see it. Been smoking & buying for 35 years, so I know my smokeshops...
Keep'em lit & enjoy...
Haymarket is still tops – Since the store origiinally opened I have been a loyal customer. Things change but the Haymarket is still the best and I have tried tobbacco all over the country and in England and Ireland and have found none better. Jim, while a bit of an eccentric, is a knowlegable expert on Pipes. He welcomes many of us to lounge around the shop and enjoy a bit of conversation while enjoying a old movie or sprts event. When Shops like Jim's are gone, it will be yet another pasage and the community of smokers will be the worse for it.
a returning customer – I have been going to Hill & Hill for 20+ years, after moving north and away from the city I have a profound respect for Jim and his choice of product. He knows me, my taste in cigars, and more over after 5 years of not being in his store he remembered me right off! For those who got a "bad deal" at Hill & Hill I'm not sure what to say. The interior of the store has a character as rich as G.P.P's history and Im glad to be a patron. And plan to return soon. XL's are good cigars!
Really? Or Really Bad Cigars.... – I walked into the store where I asked for the Dunhill brand advertised on the front door, and I was also lead to a dirty room full of old dried cigars, and 4 cigars which were his own brand and overpriced. I can say one thing the cigars were not the worst I have ever smoked, but sorry James not even close to a Montecristo #2. Also the store was full of dust and old merchandise which was just thrown all over the place. I agree with Blacksmoke666, when he said that James was "Full of Himself." However I got a good laugh out of him since he did act that way. If you want to see a guy who talks great about his product, but doesn't have a link to purchase on line, than go to HIll and Hill..... It's well worth the laugh.......
Jim Simon and his "Haymarket" – Jim Simon will tell you he puts a "special" ingredient in his Haymarket pipe tobacco, don't be fooled, it's basic vanilla aromatic tobacco. This guy (Jim) is a real joke, he says the Sam Gawith pipe tobacco blends will give u tongue-bite and are of low quality compared to his "Hay"..This guy is just full of himself. If u want to buy extremely overpriced estate pipes, then see Jim, he'll take your money. Hell, he always says all the estate pipes he sells have only been smoked one or twice, what a joke, u can get better deals on ebay, but don't take my word, go see Jim and try his worlds best "Hay" tobacco, as Jim says, "U smoke this Hay, and u won't smoke anything else". Oh yeah, bring cash, he gets pissed and will guide u to an ATM machine if u try to pay with anything other than cash...
Are you serious? – Walked into Hill and Hill yesterday, as it seems to be the only cigar store in the points. I had to ask the guy where the humidor was. He guided me towards the virtually empty humidor, which had 4 different cigars, only his house brand. He claimed he ships the cigars to James Gandolfini. I picked up one of these, and needless to say, not very good. I will never return. Dirty, Empty store. Surprised it is still in biz..
BEST PIPE TOBACCO – HAVEN'T BEEN DOWN THAT WAY FOR 20 PLUS YEARS.USED TO BUY THERE HAYMARKET PIPE TOBACCO. a VERY PRINCIPLED FELLOW AT THAT TIME
i ASKED IF HE COULD SHIP ME HIS HAYMARKET PIPE TOBACCO TO CANADA. HE REFUSED AS TOBACCO TAXES IN CANADA WERE SO HIGH HE WAS OFFENDED AND REFUSED TO DO BUSINESS IN CANADA
What a wonderful find this was and all set up by a chance meeting , with Jim, in a gas station in 1999.
The shop is small and very cozy, reminiscent of many old European tobacconists. The walk in humidor has a varied selection of cigars but the estate pipe collection is the star here. You will find a great selection of these, as well as several brands of excellent new pipes. All at prices that will fit any budget.
The varied tobacco selection is also worth noting and Jim will take the time to customise your own blend with you. This service is a throwback to the past and sadly missing at so many "modern" tobacco shops.
I live in Florida and travel for extended time periods but I never have to worry about running out of tobacco. A quick 'phone call to Jim and my supply is on its way, by priority mail, to wherever I am.
Quality service and a personal touch. If only every business would care for and about customers like Hill & Hill do.
Hi I'm JoJo – You people must be kidding! This place is a joke. Never has any cigars. Humidor is almost always empty. Get real.
