Consistently great food.. I've been going to Shangri-La in West Bloomfield for 13 years and I have never been disappointed in the food. The dim sum is fantastic. If you go on a Sunday, get there early or be prepared to wait. It will be worth the wait. The Mango pudding is fantastic. Save room for it if they don't run out. The vegetable moo shu is very good and the pancakes are fresh. You will get enough pancakes for about half of the food. Don't worry, they will bring you more but wait until you need them so they are fresh.

FYI, the Shangri La has never had Sushi on the menu.

Couldn't get out of there fast enough. Sushi was not fresh. Smelled SPOILED and too old to serve.

Cooked food was under-done and raw in center.

Waitress upset at every request (drink orders, a second menu, etc...)

When each dish came, she slammed our plates down on the table loudly

Food horribly salty. We could barely choke it down. When tried to send it back and order something else, we were told we could order something else but we'd have to pay for a dish we couldn't eat.

Alcoholic drinks obviously watered down and VERY small in size even though they were expensive.

Waitress stood beside our table after we paid in full for our food and drinks. She demanded her tip and was very pushy. She guilted my date into giving her money. I was so embarrassed.

You couldn't pay me to go back here again.

Extremely Rude Owner's Son (Shangri-La, Detroit). Address: Shangri-La Chinese Restaurant, Cass Ave. & Forest Ave., Detroit, 48202

Subject: Extremely Rude Owner's Son

We just had an extremely bad dinner experience at Shangri-La at the corner of Cass Ave. and Forest Ave. The bill was questionable, and the owner's son was disappointingly rude. The story happened after we received the bill from a waiter.

The bill clearly printed $20.95 for half a duck. But the original price on the menu for such half a duck was $14.95. So the rest $20.95-$14.95=$6.00 must come from the 8 pancakes, the source and the green onion served along with the duck. The waiter told us $0.25 per pancake, so 8 pancakes cost $2. Logically, the rest $6-$2=$4 must come from the source and the green onion. We felt really not sure about the implied $4 charge for just a bit source and green onion??? Yes, it wasn’t much money. But you know the feeling of being overcharged. And we just wanted to find out if the bill was wrong!

Half a duck: $14.95

8 pancakes : 8*$0.25= $ 2.00

A bit source and green onion: $ 4.00 or $2.00 ??????

Sum : $ 20.95 ??????

However, the waiter was reluctant to talk about the price of the source and the green onion. Instead, he asked another old man to come upstairs. But, once again, that old man simply replied that he didn't know about the price and indicated that the owner knew about the price. Anyway, this old man asked the owner's son to talk to us.

This time, we were really disappointed by this owner's son's poor attitude. We explained over and over again that we only needed to find out if the bill was wrong or not. But that rude guy wouldn't even listen. He kept shouting the following words:

"If you don't want to pay, you go out to eat!! Don't eat here!!"

"Call the police!!"

"Fxxking..."

When we asked him to clear up the bill, he calculated as follows:

"Half a duck: $14.95"

"8 pancakes : $ 2.00"

"Source and green onion: $ 2.00"

Supposedly, after a straightforward calculation, the total cost for such half a duck should be $14.95 + $ 2.00 + $ 2.00 = $18.95. So, why would they charge us $20.95 ????

His response of shouting was rather irritating:

"Fine! You just want $1 off! Are you happy now?!!"

OK, I didn't want to argue with such a rude owner's son any more. It wasn't worth my time. I paid whatever final bill they gave me. And, I paid $9 as the tips (the total bill was around $50 after tax). Though I saw no reason to pay the $9 tips, I just wanted him to know that we are never supposed to be humiliated by words like "If you don't want to pay, you go out to eat!! Don't eat here!!"

Best Dim Sum in Michigan. Upon reading the many reiews about this restaurant, I was hesitant to give it a chance. After all, it's a 30 minute drive from Dowtown Detroit, which made it to be a short road trip for a Sunday morning drive. But, I was hungry, and after spending a week overseas and having spent years travelling to various countries and experiencing Dim Sum all over the world, including in China, I'm a picky eater.

First and foremost, the food is spectacular, the service is exceptional, and the atmosphere is cozy! You'll find everything there--from Chinese Broccoli to deep fried spicy/salty whole shrimp, baby cuttle fish to chicken feet. Of course, you'll find the typical noodle, rice, and chicken dishes too, but for a family owned restaurant in the heart of Michigan, I was very impressed at how authentic everything was!

Once you enter the restaurant you're greeted by a huge wall with Chinese writing on it. The doors swing open and you're met by some of the friendliest wait staff around. And no, I never met the rude lady in black that everyone is talking about. As a matter of fact, they were all dressed in professional black uniform, but none were rude.

If you want a real authentic Chinese Dim Sum or dinner experience, you have to give this place a try. I rank it up there amongst the best Dim Sum establishments around--including Windsor, Toronto, Vancouver, or Taipai! Try it for yourself...disregard the negative reviews...and enjoy! I sure did!

Over-Priced for Average dishes. Don't look at the face of the "Famous" lady.. Saw the "famous" lady in black described in other comments. She might be a boss or wife of a boss.

I was just curious why she was not happy, considering that this restaunant is doing well. Probably she wants to show her ugly face to her employee, but forget to hide it before the customs. Sevice from waitresses was ok.

Dim Sum might be ok, but don't order dishes. Below average and overpriced.

Overrated. I"m not sure what everyone is raving about, but the dimsum here is among some of the most mediocre I've ever had. It's filling alright, but there's nothing refined about it. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the items like the bbq pork bun, which was unusually sweet, were store-bought. The Cheung Fun with bbq pork was also disappointing. All dough and like 5 bits of meat.

Best dim sum in Michigan. When your family operates its own chinese restaurant and they only want to come here to eat dim sum, then you know this place is good. You can probably also tell that by looking at the scores of other Asians dining here in the morning and afternoon for dim sum. After we eat here, we always leave happy and with a full belly. The only thing I've ever had here is dim sum, so I can't speak for the carry out or other dishes. They offer a great variety of food, the taste is quite authentic compared to NYC and Hong Kong, and once you get seated, service is pretty fast. To ensure that you get seated quickly, you have to come around 11am-noon. Any time later (and on the weekends), you'll probably have to stand in line. Don't worry, though, it'll be worth the wait. Expect to spend about $20 per person (or more if you're really hungry).

Best in town. I just got back from a 17 hour flight from Hong Kong back to Detroit and the first place I had to go was Shangri-la. The food is exactly like Hong Kong. It is truly a family atmosphere. Reading all these negative comments made by other users on this site shocks me. Those comments must be made by the housewives of West Bloomfield who expect take-out to be ready in 5 minutes. Go to McDonald's then. Or better yet, learn how to cook. Where else are you going to find Dim Sum exactly like Hong Kong in Michigan? I just had the spicy clams in black bean sauce and it was great.

Best dim sum!. Definitely worth waiting, as you may have to do on Sundays. I recommend going with a group of more than three to be able to try the most variety. Not for the timid!

Very Bad Food, Extremely RUDE Women at counter!!!. The RUDEST two women in the USA work right here at Shangri La in West Bloomfield! It's not a one or two time thing, but everytime our family goes there (we live behind them) they are witches! Not to us alone, but everyone!. Read the other reviews, they are mentioned! It would be ok if the food was good, but it's not. As a matter of fact, they have no clue what they're doing. It's OVERPRICED, overcooked and bland. The Dim Sum that they rave about is pretty good, but that's just because it's the only Dim Sum around. Their Mu Shu is absolute garbage, hoisin also bad. One OK thing on the menu is the Walnut Shrimp, but it's pretty hard to mess that up anyway. Although it's too small for the $16 price tag. When you ask for extra sauce or walnuts because they skimped, they will charge you. BS. Stay away from this Dump. The food is below-par and the staff / women at front should go back to China.
