what the h#*% happened??. used to be good but now it's dirty and the service is awful
Overpriced, standing grease, burnt. What a mistake. This is consistently the worst pizza I've ever had. The thin crust is always soaked, SOAKED with standing grease. Be prepared to knife and fork a hot slice for the sole reason that the crust is so saturated with grease that it's too floppy to support ANYTHING. The staff at 14 and Middlebelt are clueless and pompous when asked about menu items and prices. I have no idea why this place consistently is reviewed to be have really good pizza. I have had their product enough times (through work functions) and I can no longer bear to eat it. I *always* have to literally soak up the grease with several layers of paper towel before it's edible. If you want to try "Tomatoes Apizza" without paying an arm and a leg (this is pizza is way overpriced), smash the middle of your favorite pizza with a rubber mallet, pan-fry some kind of meat and cheese products and pour JUST the grease drippings all over it, then burn the crust, hike up the price by $15- and voila- Tomatoes "Apizza"! The grease hardens overnight, so trying to eat the stuff the next day is basically having a slice of coagulated grease (and you'll notice that the slices now stand straight out, supporting the weight of the toppings because the grease has hardened). I honestly can't understand why people are so GAGA over this. There's no art here, no skill, no "Cletus trained his pizza art under a Buddhist pizza master for 10 years and now he brings you this"- it's just a poorly made, crappy pizza.
Absolutely the best pizza in MI. If you want authentic pizza this is the place. I have read reviews that were not helpful to me. I have always enjoyed a thick crust until I went to Tomatoes APizza ! Amazing. In fact my neighbor just asked me where I got the delicious pizza I gave her a slice of last time. So went online to read the reviews and was shocked. Some were beyond rude ! I felt it was necessary for me to write a review that reflects how truly fabulous this pizza is. From the excellent sauce to the crust and everything in between. The staff was excellent and the waiting time was not any longer than any other pizza I had waited for. So try it.....seriously....again it is absolutely the best pizza I have had in MI . If you like thick crust this is not the pizza for you...fact!
AWSOME PIZZA. We went to the location on halsted, the pizza is very thin, but i loved it. We ordered a large sampler(recomended by our waitress) it was HUGE, the pizza was part white, part green, part fresh mozzerella and part classic, my favorite was the white and the staff was very friendly we will definatly be back.
Not my favorite pizza. So I tried Tomatoes Apizza after reading the reviews (we went to the one at Grand River & Haggerty). We were not quite sure what to expect. We had the salad bar (really good & fresh), cheesy bread & a pizza (1/2 red w/ sausage & 1/2 green). First off - the pizza ginormous. So we definetly did not need the cheesy bread. The pizza itself had really strong garlic and authentic tomato sauce, which I liked because it was so fresh. The crust is very thin, which I was expecting, but I did not care for it. It was somewhat burned & kind of hurt my jaw to eat. Leftover were not good at all - the crust was even tougher the second day. The restaurant decor is very plain/uninspired, and does not serve alcohol. I like to try new restaurants and support the local ones, but I guess I like my Buddy's pizza better.
Burned at the edges pizza for a King's ransom. The pie smelled good but the crust tasted like cardboard and the edges were blackened and burned..YUCK...carcinogens! Give me BUDDY'S any day.
A Darn Fine Pie.
Great pizza! Great pizza, and unlike most of what is offered in metro Detroit. East Coast-style pizza, with a cracker-thin, crispy crust, and a sauce that actually tastes of tomatoes (novel concept). If your idea of pizza is delivered in 30 minutes or less, or $5 large pizzas, please stay away. You'll only hurt yourself.
However, if you enjoy a quality pie made by cooks that care about their product, c'mon down! White pie, red pie, crab apizza. Try something different!
Is this the best pizza in Detroit? Well, maybe not. But it is definitely one of the best, and the best East Coast-style pie in the area. How can you go wrong with that?
Nice for A Change.
The GREAT POINTS:
This truly is "different' Pizza- definately more gourmet and for a certain taste. The ingredients are far superior to what you would find in even the best Italian ristorante. Beer and wings with this pizza would be a sin. No one has commented yet on the pasta, which with the piping hot chunks of fresh mozzarella I thought was divine. Shortly after moving into the neighborhood, we received a flyer for an entirely free dinner (not inexpensive by any means) - Lg. Pizza, Pasta, Salad, Pop and Breadsticks, which was a wonderful treat.
NEEDS IMPROVEMENT:
While the staff that answers the phone for carry-out is extremely professional (you never hear them say "Please Hold" when they answer the call) the wait for the delivery or to pick up the pizza can be very lengthy. Once I called for a delivery and an hour later, there was still no pizza. They had marked me for "pick-up". While they made fresh food and delivered it shortly, there was no discount offered- and I had 2 very crabby pre-schoolers waiting for their pizza.
The only complaint on the pizza is that it does not reheat well, but maybe if it did, it wouldn't be so good fresh :)
All in all, I would say that anybody within driving distance really needs to give this pizza a try.
A true Wooster street clone if not better. My family is from New Haven and I attended college there. When I first moved to Michigan, I gave up pizza all together after eating what the area had to offer. But thanks to Mike Weinstein and Tomatoes Apizza, I no longer have to travel to New Haven to get a great pizza. Crust is perfect, sauce has just the right flavors and Mike has gone one better with some varieties that are lacking on Wooster Street. His white pizza is to die for. Give his Crab Pizza a try and also the pizza of the month, you will not be disappointed.
Best authentic Italian Pizza. This pizza is nothing like you have ever tasted! They are giant slices with only fresh ingrediants. My favorite is the spinach because they use actual fresh leaf spinach, not from a can so it gets crispy. They also have a great salad bar that includes balsamic vinigarett, sliced meats and sliced mozzarella cheese. Fridays are all you can eat pizza buffet and it is worth it. It is definately a place to check out becuase it is so unique. The atmosphere is also like a small family place. Nothing flashy or special but comfortable. All of the waitresses and staff are friendly. Not a pizza I would recommend eating at home becuase it is so huge and thin crust I don't think it woudl hold up very well.
