There are drawbacks here - it could use a remodel and I wish the A/C worked better - but overall, it's a reasonably priced place to work out. The cardio equipment is maintained and the stretching room is great.
Karate employee is "selective" with the kids. – "If it ain't white it ain't right" Karate instructor (the short one) seems to be inclined to treat kids from different racial ethnicities "differently"
Lap Pool Warm Enough For Bacteria – I've been a lap swimmer for 23 years. I'm not competitive, but I like to get my exercise doing laps.
Sports literature recommends a range of 78 to 80 degrees for lap swimming. However, this YMCA starts their pool off at 82 degrees.
But if you come in later in the day after a lot of people have been in the pool, you're likely to find an 83 degree temp or higher.
And it's a known fact that bacteria grow faster at warm temperature. Maybe that's the stench in the Y people speak of. Guess they can put more chemicals in the water. But then do you really want swim in that?
Great place to work out! – I joined a few weeks ago and I LOVE this gym. SO MUCH BETTER than the meat-show at 24 Hour Fitness, etc. There are always machines open and low key people of all walks of life are there!
I just wish there were more wipey dispencers to wipe the machines off!!! Also, the locker rooms could be updated a tad :)
They don't seem able to safeguard bank information. – Received a letter from them telling me one of their computers that had member's personal info was stolen.
Subsequently unauthorized withdrawals began showing up on my bank statement. Had to change banks, spending a considerable amount of time on the phone trying to clean up the mess. Wrote them a letter about this - have yet to receive any kind of response. Canceled my membership. Had been a member at other Y's for over 20 years. Very irritated about this.
POORLY RUN - INEFFICIENT - DEBIT CARD INFO STOLEN – Terrible place. They claimed that one of their workers stole a computer with sensitive information in it; I cancelled the debit card I had registered with them, and called and left several messages to request that they cancel my membership. No one ever called me back...EVER!!! Then I received a letter from them stating that my card was declined and they are charging me $15 for the rejection. This is the most inefficient "Y" I have ever known. It's run by children who like to play. Besides, it's dirty.
Smells Funny – Tried this one out tonite, since I was in the area. Surprisingly empty by 9:00PM, even tho it's open 'till 11PM. Have to agree that it smells funny - the mens' showers positively stank. The tile floors were grubby, and there's no spray out in the common areas to wipe down the grubby (though otherwise modern) equipment. They actually have a great inventory of pretty modern equipment, so it's kind of sad to see they aren't maintaining the place as well as they should. Add a couple of cleaning people to the staff and address the stench and this would be a first rate facility. They even provide ample towels for free, something that's either a hassle or not available at other Y's I've tried.
wouldn't go back... – Not to scare anyone but the people who work at this place can't be trusted. I am no longer a member but I was in the past. After using a credit card I hadn't used in over a year to pay for my membership at the YMCA, suddenly my card started getting all sorts of charges on it. According to my credit card company someone got my card number and had a card made with their own information on it. I NEVER use that card and I hadn't even removed it from my wallet in years with the one exception of using it to pay for my gym membership, seems like a big coincidence to me. I purposely used the card thinking maybe something like this would happen and I was thankful I did because my credit card company didn't hold me accountable. When I called the YMCA to let them know what happened they said there was no proof that the card number was stolen there. Be careful and always check your bank statements.
Y.M.C.A. – Yes, I went to this gym, I've alway's liked the Y. There was one young lady who was very nice who toured me thru but the rest of staff need attitude ajustments. I was hopeing to join but because of my low income at this time for me and I asked if there was anyway that it could be adjusted, like their motto ,no income to low. I felt like a bum asking for a hand out. I'm writer and out of work because of the strike. I thought this to be a good idea for me to relieve stress. But I was more stressed when I left there.
Hollywood staff is rude & confrontational.... – We love the idea of the YMCA although the application is something to be desired. The staff is rude and extremely difficult. Our family has always supported the YMCA through annual donations and volunteer support of which we will no longer contribute.
The level of knowledge the staff possess and demeanor in which they approach conflict is troublesome! The facilities are dirty and there is a smell that radiates throughout that is hard to swallow.
If you're in the market for a family gym look elsewhere, there's not an up side to the YMCA. It's all downhill.
Revamped Hollywood "Y" welcomes all shapes and sizes. – The Scene
Despite its heart-of-Hollywood location, this gym's pretension factor is practically nil. Although you won't see made-up starlets on treadmills reading scripts, you might spot Denzel Washington or Tobey Maguire sweating it out on the indoor basketball courts. Staffers are friendly and encouraging, regardless of size, shape or lack of designer workout wear.
This ain't your father's YMCA; especially since its 1995 renovation. Full-service facilities and up-to-date equipment includes treadmills, elliptical trainers and stair climbers bearing state-of-the-art labels like Life Fitness and Hammer Strength. Gym-goers can also choose from a variety of classes, including boot camp, kickboxing, Spinning and several types of yoga. Other amenities include a lap pool, waist-high training pool, hot tub, two basketball courts, boxing area, racketball courts, quiet room for stretching, and a separate Spinning room. Locker rooms are fully equipped with showers and saunas, and a trained massage therapist awaits your knotted muscles.
