Thai curries are delicious here, and I particularly like the panang which includes peas. Haven't seen that anywhere else, but it is a welcome addition.
new owner not great anymore – The pico chan dara is great...pretty,good fish dishes, good prices and service.....the hollywood branch was great at one time now there are dozens of better thai restaurants...the pad thai had no flavor, the musamen also was plain...not a good choice
One too many chances – I used to like Chan Darae. Their seafood lunch plates were an excellent value. I stayed away after they were graded a C. After they improved their grade, I gave them another shot. I was shocked to see their prices had gone up. Being on a tight budget, I thought maybe I could treat myself here once in a great while. This, though, was my last visit. The waitress wasn't rude, but gave very stripped down basic service. The food is my main complaint, though. Some tofu pieces were burnt, and the noodles stuck together like after being reheated. The sauce was too sweet, and left my mouth feeling as I had consumed too much sugary confections. I'm very disappointed that this place has gone down in overall quality.
Worst Service EVER – Even with some of the best Thai food in this area, I will never go back here again. I waited over a week to write this review thinking that I can let this pass, but unfortunately people need to know! Two Saturdays ago, we had a reservation at 6:30, allowing sufficient time for a show at 8 p.m. across the street. We placed our order (one appetizer and two entrees) at 6:40. It was quite busy but at 7:10 we inquired about our order and was told it would be out right away. 5 minutes later, we did get our fried calamari appetizer with our entrees "coming up right away." We informed the server we had tickets to the show and would need to leave in about 35 minutes. "OK, no problem." 10 minutes later she returns to our table and suggests that we cancel our order since it won't be ready in time. OK...get the manager! The very apologetic manager promises to get our order "right away" and brings out one entree 5 minutes later with the promise that the second would be ready "right away." Then finally at 7:45 we were told that since it was a special order (special order, my a** - it was right off the regular menu) it would be impossible to have the dish prepared on time and they would be more than happy to take the order off our bill. She acted like she was doing us a favor! (since when does one pay for something he/she wasn't served???). I consider myself a generous tipper and regardless of how poor the food was or how lame the help was, I always try to look on the bright side, but this was the epitome of the worst customer service experience and the first time I left no tip!
Great Thai Food – We took our relatives visiting from abroad for dinner there since they wanted to try something different from what they're used to. Anyway, this was recommended by a friend and we were definitely thankful because the food was excellent. Since it was our first time we asked the server for suggestions and she was very accomodating and gave us recommendations. We started with the thai toast shaped in little hearts (so cute), it was delicious. And the pad thai was definitely worth coming back for. This is a place where I would definitely come back to again.
Great Food, Average Service... – I've been going to Chan Dara for a number of years and keep going back for the excellent Thai food, variety on the menu, and convenient location as it's close to Arclight theater as well as a number of local bars/lounges. Although I love the food, I have often found that the service is less then desirable. The staff is never that accomodating when you have any questions regarding the menu or want to make any changes in your dish/order. I would definitely suggest going there for the food if you're a Thai food lover, but maybe stick to take out or delivery as you're better of enjoying it in the comfort of your own home!!
OFFENSIVE STAFF MEMBERS & TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE – I have been ordering from Chan Dara for a long time, even though it takes twice as long as anywhere else to place and have your order delivered.
I just placed a large lunch order for delivery. First, I spoke to the manager (who barely spoke English). He could not understand my order so I was passed to another person. They also had problems taking the order and I had to give it twice. This process took over 18 minutes.
The order was not delivered for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Upon inspection, there was one dish missing. So I called them to let them know. Instead of trying to rectify the matter (by delivering the missing item - duh!) they merely wanted to enter into an argument insisting that the dish was there and that I was lying about it being missing???? Well, it was missing and they adopted the ridiculous position that I did not place the order!
All I wanted was for the missing dish being delivered (it was for my boss). After another 10 minutes of "discussion" The person told me it would be delivered in 45 minutes. Five minutes later, however, I had a rude call from the manager telling me that they had changed their mind and would not deliver it. If I wanted it, I would have to pick it up. I explained that it was impossible (I was at work) and instead of acceding to my request for it to be delivered, he merely kept stating: "I will not deliver" "I will not deliver".
I think the way I was treated and the way how this was handled was utterly disgusting. They displayed and abject disrespect for me and complete disregard for any notion of customer service. I have never been treated in that was by any merchant of any kind.
In essence, if you need to make an order for delivery for your important meeting or colleagues DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE!!! I shall certainly never do so again, having already ripped up their menu and placed it in the trash where it belongs - right next to their customer service.
bad customer service – i was very dissapointed in the way i was treated by the staff, i have been ordering delivery forever and have eaten at this resturant many times.. i called on sunday to get food delivered and they said they weren't able to do it because it was out of there area. (mind you i live 4 blocks away off of cahuenga) the manager had no sympathy whatsover and was in fact extremly rude to me. the food is good but i think owing a good restuarant also means being polite and being friendly to your customers and this was not the case.. just thought i would vent because i was really upset. thanks
Excellent Food – Great food. Try the red curry with sticky rice. De-lish. Excellent, attentive and quick service. Never had a problem getting seated immediately or within 5-10 minutes.
Great food, nice atmosphere, beautiful servers! – Their main dining room can be very romantic and quaint during night dining hours. Food and service is always superior. I can't say I have ever had a bad meal or experience there.
If you don't see something on the menu you like, they will usually try to accommodate your tastes by creating a dish for you based on what you like. I reccommend the eggplant with chicken cooked with chili and basil.
The waitresses are model quality, which makes the experience that much better. This quiet spot is frequented by some of LA's finest, so expect to do some stargazing on weekends. Actors and musicians photos adorn the hallways, as souveniers for the staff.
If you're on the fence for thai in LA, give it a try!
