Great food but ..... – It is true that the food was very good but the place is a bit untidy. I'd rather go to a Thai restaurant with better setting and cleaner environment even though the food is not as good as Yai.
Quality Thai food at cheap prices – The Shrimp with Chili garlic sauce is really good but it's probably the spiciest dish I've ever had in my life. My eyes are still watering. I would definitely ask to get it "mild."
Authentic Thai – I first learned about Yai in Thailand from a Peruvian woman and a British man who swore it was the ONLY Thai restaurant to dine at in Los Angeles. We tried it, and we've been hooked for years. While there are plenty of other good Thai restaurants in the area, Yai is consistantly good, very fresh and very authentic. Their fried tofu is unique and out of this world. Don't go for the atmosphere, go just for the food!
REAL THAI – This place feels like a Thai cafeteria. The decor isn't the greatest, but you come here for the food anyway. Spicy, delicious and the most authentic Thai food. Lots of northern Isaarn specialities. I recommend the moo yang (grilled pork), som tam (papaya salad) and sticky rice.
If you like spicy... – Yai has the most authentic, tasty Thai food I have ever tasted. I have been coming there for more than 10 years now, and very little has changed. The surroundings are ugly, the interior is drab, but the food is always delicious. The food is spicy and authentic, I know because I have traveled to Thailand, and even my Thai friends admit Yai is one of LA's best.
Authentic Thai chilli food – I love this place, it's authentic Thai food not your watered down version at so many upscale places. Chicken with Chilli is recommended, though the Tom Kha Gai has too much lemongrass. Remember spicy means spicy!
Yummy. – I discovered this gem in 1990 through an ex-bf. I have been going here at least once a week. My faves are the BBQ beef, Shrimp w/Chili garlic sauce(spicy, but Yummy!!!) and the Wonton soup.
Must eats at Yai – Stop. If you are going to eat at Pyai you must order the BBQ Beef under appetizers and #90 chicken with mint leaves. After that, you will find yourself eating there at least once a week.
Amazing Food; Great Value – From someone who has eaten at many of the Thai restaurants in Los Angeles and hundreds otherwise, the food at this complete hole-in-the-wall easily ranks among the top 5 in Los Angeles. The noodle and curry dishes are particularly strong. Contrary to the Citysearch reviewer's scoring and take, the food is not any heavier compared to other Thai restaurants in town.
One of Thai Town's Best – I've been to dozens of Thai restaurants in Hollywood/Silverlake, and this is easily one of the best. Great food real cheap, real fast, and NO Hollywood scene (the patrons are usually low key Thai families or random gay or hipster couples; no annoying actors on cellphones or drunk parties of 8). Friendly fast service, they serve beer, and have great peanut sauce. RECOMMENDED!
