Terrible – I recently moved across the street and was pretty excited about living across from a restaurant, especially when I saw their comfort food heavy menu.
I went there on a Tuesday afternoon and sat at the bar and wow, the service was even worse than the food.
(Everyone who worked there looked like they had just crawled out of bed).
It was expensive for what it was and I always think it is pretty ridiculous when you have to pay a dollar more for fries when you are at a restaurant and are already paying over 11 dollars.
I was hoping the other reviews were just an off experience, but after trying it twice I realize that they are right.
I like the space but the staff is terrible and the food is just ok.
Sorry, but I would skip this place.
Great Food....Soup Nazi Service – Eli's is a well kept secret. The atmosphere is always sensational and the food is always great. My favorites the Stuffed Chicken Breast, Penne and Cheese and the CRAB CAKES!!!!! The crab cakes are the best I've had north of New Orleans. (I am transplanted in Minneapolis from Mississippi) Unfortunately the service reminds me of the Seinfeld episode about the Soup Nazi. The wait staff is just incredibly rude. Eli's has been my favorite Minneapolis restaurant since moving North...but after coming in Friday night 6/17/11 and once again encountering the soup Nazi wait staff, I have decided I will never again go to Eli's. I will miss it but there is no shortage of great restaurants in the Cities....
Beware of Blake – This bartender needs some serious anger management control. Don't dare to express an opinion or engage with him in any way. He is moody, unpredictable, confrontational, and downright hostile. My girlfriend and I were sitting at the bar last night, as the bartender was berating a customer non-stop and creating a very uncomfortable situation for all. I attempted to try to ease the situation, which was not a good idea. He transferred all of his aggression toward me, becoming increasingly nasty, and ultimately ending in threats. Correct me if Im wrong, but isn't Eli's a service industry? Doesn't that include customer service? Well, this isn't "service", this is abuse. Management, have you become that apathetic toward your employees? Worst of all, can you believe I actually left this individual a tip? Now that's embarrassing.
Horrible Service – The service has always been okay until recently. Had a friend visiting from out of town, arrived at Eli's he was totally starving. It was busy and there were three tables connected for a six person table with two young ladies. The server would not let us sit beside them but said we could have their table when they left. We ordered drinks at the bar, the ladies left and the server was no where to be found. So we got up and went to the table, the owner came out and said we couldn't sit there because it was a table for six, we tried to explain that the server offered it, the owner was really rude and denied us the table. We had already ordered drinks and weren't finished and he asked us to leave - he said we were being difficult. I think my friend showed some irritation in his voice but wasn't using foul language or yelling. It was the worse experience ever. Here's the kicker: I had been a regular and gone at least (minimum) of twice a week for at least a year - and introduced several people to the place. How disappointing.
YUM – I LOVE the food...
I've tried several things on their menu and I've enjoyed all of it. Having weekly specials is a fun bonus to this place and keeps me coming back :) Its all so delish!!
Its definitely casual and cozy.
I know I read a few things on them having poor service, I guess Ive been fortunate to have great wait staff! Hit and miss I suppose.
A little bit of Old Minnepolis survives near Block E – While scores of trendy, high-concept bars and eateries compete for nightlife dollars in downtown Minneapolis, Eli’s has remained a simple staple. Indeed, anyone who thinks a true neighborhood bar and grill can’t subsist within a mile of Block E will quickly be proven wrong here. Beyond the formidable list of beer, wines and spirits, you’ll find a full food menu all day long: burgers, salads, chicken wings, pasta dishes and Vienna beef hot dogs are all deployed with an attentiveness you won’t find at the average fully licensed grease pit. Service has been uneven since the longstanding local haunt changed hands in 2005, but if you’re looking for a comfortable, no-frills respite from the bustling Hennepin Avenue strip, it’s well worth a stop.
The food is still delicious here; however, it is sllllooooowwwww, SO slow! Also, the service has definitely gone downhill. When the food is taking that long, the service needs to be top notch. I did not see my server for a long time. Then when i said that i needed my food boxed to go, she gave me attitude. Go for the food (I could care less about service which only reflects in tipping) and don't have anywhere to go to immediately afterward.
Delicious Food and Friendly Service – Eli's is a wonderful neighborhood bar and restaurant. It is casual and reasonably priced, while the food is always fresh and delicious. They have both basic fare and some interesting items. My husband's favorite is the beef sandwich, it is wonderful. I love the pastas & salads, they have some on their menu and great weekly specials. The service is always friendly and attentive. They have a full bar, with a nice wine and beer selection too. I am fortunate it is close to home, it is a perfect spot for a casual, but good dinner, or for take out.
Good Food - Poor Service – I have been to Elis several times over the past two years. Overall, I have always enjoyed the food there. Their sloppy joes and hamburgers are very good. However, I have been disappointed on a few occasions by the poor service: order food and not have the wait staff check in with us as we wait, having to wait for 45 minutes or more, and then being yelled at because we asked for another drink. At first I dismissed it due to the large crowds. My friends were not so willing to agree. But I kept going back.
That all changed recently. I went with a friend of mine to enjoy dinner. It was a Wednesday night and the place was rather full when we got there. A few tables were still open and some people were leaving. Not too concerned, we ordered our food. After 20 minutes of waiting we informed by the waitress that the salad we ordered could not be made as they did not have the lettuce. Finding it strange that it took 20 minutes to figure that out, we became concerned. I insisted we stay.
An hour later I was no longer amused. We had not received our food, the waitress wouldn't even acknowledge our table, and it really was obvious that no one cared. We decided to leave as we couldn't handle being ignored or not receiving our food. As we stood, the waitress finally noticed us and asked, with a shocked look on our face, why we were leaving. Upon being told that it was well over an hour that we had to wait, she did nothing to encourage our staying.
This was a real disappointment for me. I truly did enjoy the place and the food. But I don't think I will ever go back there after having this happen. I would be much more willing if the staff actually made an attempt to acknowledge the wait.
Check it out!!! – The food at Eli's is always amazing and I enjoy the new specials that come out every week; it really helps to add variety to an already awesome menu. The service has always been exceptional and unlike the previous poster I recommend it any night of the week (even Monday nights) just realize that when its busy its busy and it can get quite busy at times. I have also been impressed with the music selection that I have heard. It ranges from jazz during dinner to hip-hop and rock late at night it's, always good. This place offers anything for any mood you are in, casual or fine dining they have you covered, I highly recommend it.
