Reviews for East 42nd Street Salon

I went to this salon for the first time a little over a year ago. I was very reluctant because my hair is very difficult to cut. In fact, the only other stylist that did a great job was back in 1973, I was 11 years old and it was in NYC by Vidal Sasoon himself. Everyone after that claimed they knew what they were doing, but didn't. Teresa came in on her day off when the salon was closed, overly accommodating....sat me down, educated me and proceeded to give me a cut. For the next 4 months my hair went into freak out mode, everything I was doing to my hair was wrong for my entire life. After that initial adjustment my hair certainly changed for the better and it has been the healthiest it's ever been. I highly recommend this salon.

Ask for Kristy. She's the only one there with long, curly hair and SHE REALLY GETS IT!

Oh my good. I just read that review about this place being a curly hair fraud.

I thought I was the only one.

I got butchered. It took a year and a half to grow out. The (this is too kind) stylist cut in the middle of a curl so my hair stuck out every which way and I couldn't find anything to fix it. I tried products, new cuts, even a wig!!!!!

East 42 street salon is a butcher shop that hacks off your hair without knowing what they are doing. My advise is to stay very, very far away if you have curly hair.

I gave this a one star rating but I would really like to give it a negative 5 star rating. Nothing would ever make me give them another chance. I have recommend to everyone I know to not patronize this place. When the cutter said "I started with the easy side of your head because I don't really know what to do with the rest of it" I gasped in horror. Did she offer to give me a discount or fix it? Hell no. Did it look horrible? Hell yes. Did it grow in nicely? Hell no,

What did people say about this cut? The nicest thing I was told is "the good news is that your hair grows kinda fast". I would not call that a compliment, would you?

Curly hair fraud – I had chin length pretty cute curly hair when I walked in . Teresa cut my hair. She is not very personable but most importantly the only reason she has a curly hair salon is that she heard there is a great market for it. She doesn't have curly hair, doesn't understand it and can't cut it. she too, some class and just spouts off on what she learned.

I asked for a trim and she cut off about 5 inches. She keeps you facing a wall instead of the mirror so I had no idea what she was doing. One side is about an inch longer than the other. My bangs which I wanted to keep are now at my hairline. It is uneven, it is too short to curl, it is so horrible that I am going to have extensions put in. I won't leave the house until I get them. I am even taking a week vacation because I won't be seen in public. Upset does not begin to describe the hack job I got at the hand of this fraud.

I agree with the other comment about her overbooking, being rude, having horrible staff and by the way who want to jump over other people's legs to sit in an uncomfortable pew mascarading as seating while you wait. DO NOT EVER, EVER think you will get a decent cut here.

Great cut and color – I wanted a new look, and was hesitant to get a cut, because the last cut I had was soooooo horrible. I stumbled upon East 42nd Street Salon after googling curly hair salons in Minneapolis, and decided to book an appointment.

The stylist I had was Teresa. I explained that I wanted something different, but was a little nervous as the last cut I had was so bad. After a thorough consultation she calmed my nerves and proceeded to cut and color my hair. Teresa was quiet through the whole process, but I actually enjoyed not having a lot of chit chat. When I was done I loved my look!!!, and I pre booked my next appt which I have never done. I highly recommend Teresa she was informative, professional, and not a lot of chit chat.

Mixed review... – I've been looking for a new curly hair stylist for awhile now for my naturally curly hair since Accolades salon kept screwing up my appointments, and I heard that East 42nd had a lot of stylists with curly hair experience. I booked an appointment with Teresa. I showed her pictures of the exact color i wanted the hi-lights & low-lights & a picture of the length of the cut & style of layers (right below the shoulders at the collar bone, which I even pointed to on my body). She wasn't rude or anything, just not personable/friendly or talkative, no chit chat or small talk...kind of felt uncomfortable, until her assistant (sorry, can't remember her name) came to help. They discussed the color, Teresa did the cut (silently), and then her assistant basically did 90% of the color, while Teresa disappeared. The assistant was plenty talkative & friendly. While I was sitting in the chair processing, Teresa had double booked her time with me, and asked me to move out of her chair so her next client could sit there to get a cut. Ummm....ok, kinda rude, but whatever. After the alarm went off that the processing time was up, the ASSISTANT checked my color, shampooed me, and explained the prodcuts. Only then did Teresa show back up to help with the blow dry & style. So, basically I spent over $250 to have 90% of my appointment with her assistant & for a bottle of shampoo & conditioner. To top it off, the hi-lights & low-lights were not at all the color I asked for (they were okay looking, not hideous, but not at all the color I showed her in the picture, which I unfortunately couldn't really see until it was daylight out the next day since it was dark in the salon at night) & the cut was about 2 inches shorter than I requested. It was just an okay cut...okay layers, but unfortunately it was cut blunt, straight across the back, which I specifically said I did NOT want a block cheese-wedge cut!!!! I've had better cuts at Sam's club, which is sad considering the level of expertise I was expecting. I liked the Diva products a lot, and the assistant was very nice, so I will try going back again, just to a different stylist. I definately did NOT get my moneys worth, wish I could get the tip back

Wow!!! Made a bad cut from another salon a knockout! – I called the salon on Monday after a VERY unbecoming cut on Saturday. I have curly hair, but had been with the other stylist for about a year and the cuts were OK. Last Saturday, I showed her a photo of what I wanted and cringed as she took thinning shears to my hair. Well, I left that salon on Saturday looking like Bozo. After speaking with the really helpful receptionist, I scheduled a cut with Teresa. It is a difficult thing to take a really bad cut and make it so cute that within an hour of getting to work all of the referral cards I was given were gone!!! Everyone commented on my hair -- I feel younger and chicer than I have in years! Thank you Teresa! I have NEVER had this kind of positive response to a haircut before. I'll be back. And, I'll be bringing my Mom! Teresa listened to me -- told me things about my hair, walked e through the Curly Girl routine (which I thought I had down) and gave really helpful hints on how to keep it from frizzing. Didn't push products (I already use Deva Curl), but made two excellent recommendations. If you have curly hair -- this is the place for you!

Sam is Super Sassy!!! – Sam is the best stylist I have ever had! I completely trust her. My sister has extremely curly hair and Sam recommended the Salon before she even worked there. My sister had her hair done and I can honestly say it was the best money my sister EVER spent. She gets complements on her hair EVERYDAY! Not only did the staff give her a phenomenal haircut, but they also taught my sister how to care for her hair. It has really changed her life for the better.

I do not have the amazing curly hair that my sister does. But both my husband and I see Sam! She is amazing. She gives you the "best haircuts, EVER," according to my husband. And, he does have curly hair. But she also has a way of giving you advice that you can trust and implement! I am so happy I found her!

Great Stylist – My stylist Cheri creates a great cut and color. For years I went to others never finding the right fit. With Cheri I have.I trust her vision in the style she creates for me and the color she invents. My hair looks great,is easy to care for and when family pulls out old pictures I know why I continue to thank Cheri for my look.Thank you.

the only salon I trust – Carolyn is absolutely the best stylist I have ever had and I would be lost without her! She has had advanced training at Deva in NYC, and it really shows! Carolyn knows how to listen and how to communicate; it is obvious she enjoys her clients.
